Just leave the wind lever in the stand off position when exposing a series of images then you won’t move the mode dial. Also that’s a huge bag for such a small camera
Great tip! Yeah the bag was for my drone, video camera, gimbal, 360 cam, laptop, cables and hard drives plus travel clothes 🤣 I actually think it wasn’t big enough. When I travel to make content I generally have to carry everything with me coz I’m constantly on the move
It was a really really expired roll of Fuji Superia, I have done hundred of rolls in my lab and actually have a pretty decent workflow and equipment to get everything right so really it is not the development is just how expired film works. Sometimes you win some times you lose 😅
He did fine for someone new to how the camera operates. You are just a hater internet troll. You probably never even touched a film camera before in your life.
Nice snaps, that film looks like a fun one to try out. I’ll be getting one Pentax 17, I don’t have any half-frame, and this one, with latest lens tech makes a good candidate for me as I like having options depending on my trips
I was very lucky that a family friend had it tucked in a box and didn’t use it for 10 years so decided to gift it to me. Sent it for servicing and it should roll for at least a couple of decades. They had pretty nice green screen studios back in the day init? 🤣
Yes the lens has a motor that moves forwards and backwards depending on your chosen focusing distance. And the movement happens as you press the shutter button 😅🤷🏼♂️ I dunno to be honest I found it very weird too
Well said! It's a great little camera! Im half way through my first roll and I am not new to film so I am not the target market but I want to support Pentax's efforts. I hope this camera has made the other big players sit up and take notice of what they have achieved.
Yes!! That’s so cool! I hope you are enjoying the camera, I am definitely not their target either but definitely have had a lot of fun with that camera. I hope other companies start also taking part in this market again
I was shooting a really wacky film from Japan, I made a couple of proper reviews on my channel where I show samples with HP5, Gold and Ultramax the look pretty sick 😍
The audio is a little distorted, my friend. That battery screw will get lost fast. It looks WRONG in regard to the camera aesthetics. If I bought a 17 - I would paint it black - but also buy a half dozen at a hardware store - for spares,
I have the 17 and trust me, that screw is TIGHT af. Once it’s in place, it isn’t going anywhere. Plus you don’t even notice the screw cuz it’s in your hand the whole time you’re shooting with it. This camera is built really well.
Bought this camera as my family/ people and street cam that I don’t have to be afraid that it unreparebly breaks… Since the format is economically perfect for me because with the m6 or the rz67 with full or medium format I never want to „waste“ it on people that I anyways never will print big… I really can’t wait as a daily notetaking and documenting cam… Honestly probably would have been happy with a small spycam tho lol:) But honestly the halfframe is perfect for anyone that doesn’t want to print A2 size Edit: And honestly who doesn’t want to have the experience of opening a package of a new analog camera in 2024 🤯
This is amaaaaaazing! I love this camera for the exact same reason! I tried before shooting 110 to have a less fuss experience and the “spy camera” sort of portability. But 1 image quality drops considerably, 2 getting it developed and scanned is a pain and 3 there aren’t as many film stocks available for it so yeah… half frame is a good alternative for shoot and don’t think too much for me
Shame on you. This is not acceptable. One must be blind to look at film photos nowadays. You want a film look, just apply countless filters to digital processing of RAW data. “ film community” I have not enough words of disapproval for your consumerist hedonistic approach to global resources. You want all this chemical dirt back? What for? For your wasteful pleasure of getting on good frame per film? Which you will the scan any way to treat in your PC? “Film community” you must be out of your minds .
@@shotbychrisl me? I am perfectly sane, which is potentially not true about all those hedonistic consumerism indulged kids who resurrect stupid chemical technology of making photos. Be honest with yourself, how many good frames you get per film? 1 2 0 ? And the what all to drain ? Just because you can afford that? That is reckless wastefulness. Tell me otherwise.
Very good video and very well put in a nutshell what this camera stands for. Personally, I prefer to shoot in full format with 35mm film, but the camera is a very good start that gives hope for more.
@@shotbychrisl Well, I'm not giving up hope that Pentax will eventually bring the equivalent of the Nikon FM or FM2 onto the market. Because the only Pentax camera that comes reasonably close to an FM or FM2 with a metal leaf shutter is the Pentax K2, where you can at least shoot from 1/125 to 1/1000 of a second without batteries. The only cameras with K-mount that work completely mechanically, apart from the battery-operated light meter, come from Ricoh, Cosina and Chinon, or are their export models. And such a fully mechanically functioning SLR camera directly from Pentax, perhaps also with a 1/4000 as the fastest mechanical shutter speed, that would be a real challenge and there would be no need to use other manufacturers. After all, Pentax and Ricoh have been one company since 2011, so it might be possible to tackle something like this together. Greetings from Germany wishes you Lutz
@@michaelbruchas6663 I have a Praktica VLC2, a Sigma Mark 1, soon a Universa Interflex TL, a Voigtländer Vito CSR and a Voigtländer Vitomatic IIIcs. And they are all full frame. And what do you mean by emphasizing full format? That you might not be part of the Pentax 17's main target group and are upset that after 20 years Pentax hasn't included digital in their main target group with their first new analogue camera? By the way, the main target group are 18-35 year olds who have never taken photos with an analog camera before, have only taken photos mainly or entirely with a smartphone and therefore have completely different viewing habits, namely upright. By the way, everyone else who gets the camera is a bonus and since, according to my information, there are also many who got a Pentax 17 among those who are not in the main target group, there are now delivery bottlenecks because of the demand is very high. So what do you want to express now?
@@michaelbruchas6663 a camera that today costs around £300 on an ebay gamble no tested and no warranties. Definitely a good camera, but this is not the ideal scenario for someone starting on film from 0 in 2024 which is the point of my video. The 17 isnl't a camera that was aim for people that have been in the photography industry for decades.
Great shots, love the colour rendition. I have never seen that film brand. Looks really interesting. Thinking about getting one of those little camera gems myself. Thanks for sharing your story 👍🏻
Hey thanks for the feedback! yes the filmstock its actually pretty weird one it was the first time I was shooting it! The camera is a great performer! It has limitations but well like any other camera.
Honestly, I think the camera looks great and is worth the price, but it's difficult for me to justify getting one because I have a hard enough time going through a roll of 36 shots as-is.
Seeing this all in glorious DIGITAL streaming video on youtube made on a DIGITAL computer, from DIGITAL footage. Analog film is a joke in 2024. Oh and by the way, some color filter doesn`t make your video cinematic.
I really enjoyed the color grading of your film and the review of this interesting camera. I wonder if it will inspire other manufacturers to follow suit?🤔
Thanks 🙏 well it depends there are other manufacturers making film cameras nowadays Kodak Reto makes some refillable “disposable like cameras”, then Pentax, Mint Cameras that’s about to launch their Rollei 35AF and obviously on the high end Leica. There is quite a bit of interest in the industry and the community also there are more and more commercial clients asking photographers to produce analogue work so there is definitely space in the market for it! Hopefully the Pentax project will be successful enough for them to have some future cameras developed.
Ebay is full of beautiful 35mm film cameras, including half-frame, for 25% of the price of this. I just bought a superb condition Canon 5D for $200 that will produce stunning, film-like, images way better than this toy. If you really must go "vintage" then do it properly, and buy a real vintage camera to do it with and save yourself $400
Great! Absolutely valid idea, however Ebay is full of 30 years old used cameras which in most cases come with no warranty, never been serviced, neither tested so there is some gamble there. Second a 5D is a full frame sensor digital camera that has absolutely nothing to do with film apart that you can capture images with it, the look, the feel, the process of image creation have nothing to do with anything analogue. this is not a "vintage" neither I ever mentioned the word "vintage" in the video once it is simply a film camera manufactured in 2024, which me as a film enthusiast and a person that absolutely loves film and the film community then it is a big deal.
@@shotbychrislCompletely agree. Film doesn’t need to be vintage. Half the films available these days are pretty modern and with a modern scanner you can get dynamic range and color you won’t get from most digital cameras. And the issues with there only being used cameras is not just that they might fail or need to be serviced but with analog photography going on they will one become more expensive as they get older and less reliable. New film cameras are one of the most important things for the medium to survive, for people to have tools they can actually rely on.
Hahahaha I call it my turtle shell it goes with me everywhere I go, I carry drone, 2 or three camera bodies (film/digital), 360 camera, gimbal etc etc etc xD
I think if they could price this slightly more budget friendly I would easily get this. I am saving to get a new fuji or a leica and I rather spend the money toward those than this film camera. However hope Pentax sees success and we see new formats of film come out.
I’m telling you by a fact that if they do succeed and come with a “full metal professional SRL with all the bells like everyone wants” ain’t going to sell cheaper than £2,000 and everyone will anyway be crying a river
As I recall, the main drawback of film cameras was that if they malfunctioned, the film would be wasted. So what makes people drawn back to using film cameras today?
Mmmm… the only drawback that films cameras have is that you have to buy film and it requires a constant investment to get new photos… there is no other draw back if you have a decent camera and keep it serviced with an actual camera technician then there should be no malfunction no film waste
Sure I still haven’t seen a properly functioning Legendary camera for £100 and been working on the photography industry for the last 7 years. If it is not your jam I respect it but spreading negativity does not help the industry neither the community in any way 🥱
@@shotbychrisl in EVERY camera store you get well functioning used film cameras without spending a fortune. this is no negativity it s just my opinion.... nobody would have used half frame without that massive marketing campaign going on on this camera. if you wanna be an everybody s darling reviewer in hope of being accepted by the brand so be it :D that doesn t change my mind.
@@stephanweiskorn6760 i don t know if you ever entered a camera store with used camera gear but here in germany there are tons of used well functioning film cameras. bye
