Have a talking drum my uncle brought from Nigeria in the mid 1960's, where he was working through the Peace Corps. It is in lovely condition - the doubled tonal strings are in perfect shape, the top and bottom are intact and the leather is unchecked or cracked. The original drumstick is present and in good shape. Have operated it sparingly, and managed to develop some interesting music. The workmanship on this instrument is phenomenal. If there were others available I would try to develop some music. As it may be a museum piece, am conserving it carefully. The bits that I tried some years ago when it became something I owned showed it to be a fairly versatile instrument. No longer play it. Will send it to a museum at some point.
He does a nice job explaining and teaching. This is the correct way to do this, especially for beginners. More advanced players may find it easier and quicker to use different methods of getting that strap on correctly, but nothing wrong with this method.
Frikyiwa (Free-chee-wa) is that instrument without which there would be NO yam festival for the Bono (Bunu) people of Ghana. Have you heard of the Apour festival of Techiman and Wenchi? Well, if there is no Frikyiwa, there wouldn't be Apour festival. Anyways, Apour is the origin of democracy in Ghana. I grew up hearing the sound of this instrument in the month of April. Super awesome memories 🥰🥰🥰
