AS A CHILD WE TRAVELLED EVERYWHERE ON THE BUSES. OUR LOCAL BUS SERVICE FROM CADBURY HEATH RAN HOURLY TO BRISTOL AND ON IT'S JOURNEY STOPPED RIGHT OUTSIDE OF HANHAM BUS DEPOT. GREAT VIEW OF BRISTOL BUSES PARKED INSIDE. I COLLECTED BUS TICKETS AND USED THEM AT HOME WITH A CONDUCTOR SET I HAD FOR CHRISTMAS. IN 1962 WE MOVED TO REDFIELD IN EAST BRISTOL AND I DISCOVERED TRAIN SPOTTING AT LAWRENCE HILL STATION. SOME OF MY FRIENDS ALSO DID BUS SPOTTING. WE LIVED WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE OF LAWRENCE HILL BUS DEPOT AND CENTRAL REPAIR WORKS AND VERY SOON EVERY SUNDAY MORNING WAS SPENT THERE. SCHOOL HOLIDAYS WOULD FIND ME AT BRISTOL BUS STATION AND CANONS MARSH COACH PARK. IN 1972 I GOT MY FIRST CAR AND I COULD NOW TRAVEL TO EVERY BRISTOL OMNIBUS DEPOT AND FURTHER AFIELD. I TOOK MY FIRST BUS PHOTOS IN 1966 BUT IT WAS IN THE 1970s MY BUS PHOTOGRAPHY REALLY TOOK OFF. I HAVE BEEN PHOTOGRAPHING BUSES EVER SINCE. I THOUGHT IT WAS ABOUT TIME I STARTED SHARING THESE PHOTOS FOR THE ENJOYMENT OF OTHERS.
There's a shot of PTX830F about to leave for Ynysybwl. I think it's me driving. I'm not sure if it was me with the tow bus in another shot but it could well have been as I attended Many breakdowns there with that vehicle.
Beautiful footage of unbelievably fifty years ago. Seeing these buses within the bus station I can Clearly hear the sounds of them moving within the building. Until seeing this footage I'd completely forgotten the sound of them...
Chepstow is in Wales and not Gloucestershire. Did any Red and White buses go across the Severn Bridge to Bristol, and any green Bristol buses in Chepstow?
Sad to see WN/SN's standards and their once huge operational network diminished. The end game for WN was First acquiring them, kiss of death for everything First taints. The usual asset stripping and WN's scrapyard fleet barely within the law. The ugly face of First and corrupt conservativism destroyed what had once been an outstanding company under Nationalisation.
I used to go to school in Cheltenham. Naunton Park Secondary Modern School from 1976 through 1979 when I left school and moved back to Havant in Hampshire. I recall going to the ABC Cinema on The Prominade and behind the cinema was The Royal Wells Bus Station. I recall with very fond memories my time spent in Cheltenham Gloucestershire.
Here is the Hants and Dorset Bus driving through South Wales at Llancaiach Fawr and Blackwood. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VwwYewOzOQE.htmlsi=vmD5m2nZ1vShz1ZW
Should there be some Bath buses in a video about bath buses? All I see are a myriad of Bristol buses possibly performing their circuit between Bristol and Bath. How about "buses in bath in the 70s" if you want an honest title. Obviously Bristol buses transited between Bristol and Bath but I don't remember seeing one at Weston. Bristol buses would stand out ad they were more modern than the "hold very tight, ding ding" type bath buses.
Buses in Bath were run by the Bristol Omnibus Company in the 1970s. Most of the Bath Depot buses had Bath as a fleet name some had Bristol. Bristol Omnibus was part of the National Bus Company. They did not encourage local identity at that time. Bristol Omnibus operated over a wide area and also had depots at Wells, Highbridge, Devizes, Trowbridge, Swindon, Cirencester, Stroud, Gloucester and Cheltenham.
I remember bath buses being the 'modern' single deckers (217 Weston to City) and the open rear double deckers (204 weston to city) The 'posh' double deckers were the Bristol route ones if I remember rightly. I always remember the luxurious atlanteans when we visited family in Pompey
I was hoping to see the grey and orange buses that parked near the prom and took tourists around the Great Orme. Wonderful little buses that I spent many hours on as a kid in the 70s. My parents watched the scenery...I watched the drivers, with such jealousy!!
I enjoyed two or three visits as a child in the early 70s by explorer ticket from Whitchurch to Andover and Salisbury and then the long joint service down to Bournemouth on a Lodekka. The coach station was also fascinating to me. Great photos👍
Had forgotten that when R&W became National, the beautifully made cream enamel BRISTOL/ECW centre badge on the MW (between the front wings), was replaced with the not so attractive double N emblem. Thankfully I do have one!
Hello Peter. Actually Red and White vehicles didn't look too bad in National livery. Great shame that the name disappeared and Western Welsh as well. Regards Dave.
Wonder how many ended up in the hands of the new age travellers ..... down an old green lane with wood smoke coming from a stove pipe through the roof.
@@onthebuses8644 After the destruction of the "Beanfield" and similar incidents, I believe some of the travellers took their coaches and escaped to Spain. I remember the very last stonehenge festival to actually happen. We had two of the buses on our premises for some days before they moved up to the festival site. The "Bluelake" bus .... a single decker, and a double deck Leyland owned by Chris and Caroline. I also remember "Scouse" ...the later originator of the "Wango Reilly travelling stage" arriving at our place to drive the single decker up to Stonehenge. Great young people. The current young won't say boo to goose !
Bristol Omnibus/Badgerline/First Group had a good network of services in West Wiltshire, many of which were inherited from Western National, now all they operate in the county is the Bath - Trowbridge - Warminster route.
Hello Robert. Unfortunately, National White destroyed many of our classic coach liveries. Just like you I loved the Bristol RELH / ECW coaches. The Duple coach design was not the best. I always preferred Plaxton. Regards Dave.
Those buses belonged to the Lincolnshire Road Car Company. They were a former Tilling Group company like the Bristol Omnibus Company and had similar vehicles. Regards Dave.
Brilliant. The glory days of Crosville. My aunt & uncle owned a guest house in Holyhead and I got great shots of the line up at the depot there. (Including a Bristol VRT in summer 81)
Hello Michael. My dad was stationed in North Wales when he was in the army. This always gave me a soft spot for Crosville buses. Such a great shame that the old companies have gone. Regards Dave.
