Siskel and Ebert were great together. You got to hear both opinions on every movie. But they were also both older than the gaming generation at the time. They didn't have video games for entertainment and probably didn't need them. They did however have films which was another form of entertainment. What did people do back then to pass the time? Play cards, gamble, play sports, board games, listen to music, read a book, ect. Gaming just added another thing to do decades later and they didn't have any time or experience with it. If they had enough time with games, they would be able to talk about their connection to them and how they are art.
i think a *really* underrated moment of evo this year was a jack o (usually placed very midtier, i honestly never even really see a lot of thought given to her, and although she's a setplay character, she has to have a lot of stuff up to do anything, and if u know the MU, the very last thing you want to do is even let her have 1 minion onscreen. as a result she can really struggle. like notoriously her most common super does NO damage.) winning against a sol in strive (big high damage rushdown beat you to a pulp dude. but also wtf how would u not know sol badguy) the moments right after nitro's win are really something i'll never forget for a lot of reasons but what really struck me is that his family was there, and his friends too of course but i feel like someone's family is a different case. like he REALLY believed in his character. ik this isnt what you're actually talking about at all lol but i do want to mention it cuz i havent really seen anyone talk about it and u mentioned hugo being pretty bottom tier in 3s :P EDIT: edited because i cannot spell
Anything can be art, and any art can have meaning. Even if the creator says that their work has no deeper meaning, one can interpret that statement as meta commentary on art with pretentious meanings. It all comes down to perspective.
While I generally like the sentiment I might push back on what could be construed as the cliche romanticization of "Thing but Japan." There's a fair bet to be made that these employees were obligated to attend whether it be out of financial need or the social and societal pressure of Japanese work culture. I'm sure the SEGA arcade provided noteworthy memories for an incalculable number of people, and that in itself might get at the point you're making. I'm just not sure minimum wage employees being made to bow in front of onlookers for a photo op spectacle necessarily gets at the "art" of it all.
You definitely have a point. It's inevitably a flawed image to use for the theme I was aiming for. And it's fair to point out that, in trying to shine a bit of a light on the underappreciated people in gaming, I may have went a bit far in the other direction and over-sentimentalized it a bit. Not sure where the balance is, but it's fair to argue that I didn't quite find it.
Hello this comment cuts deep. I never thought of it that way in this instance. But I do understand what you mean. I come from a poor country and have similar feelings about vloggers traveling to remote places and showing people making 'traditional' things. I guess the circumstances could be similar elsewhere even in developed places.
I remember reading in "Culture of Stone" (book about INcan relationship to rock) a discussion about art that kinda frames it as a relatively recent thing or at least a recent view of things that made a lot of sense to me and also made me a lot less emtionally invested in these "is x art" debates
In fairness, my second video did fairly respectable numbers before ending up in copyright jail. But yeah, it's not really possible for me to predict what's gonna blow up and what isn't, so I'm just making what comes to mind and seeing what happens.
the three videos you've posted have both brought me to tears and inspired me to get me inspired to work on my art. thank you. this was exactly what I needed in the moment I needed it. like food or water
Thanks for making me cry... >:'( The part about tying your self-worth to fight game performance hits close to the heart. I play Melee, and I'll be honest, I tie way too much of my self-worth to a game I'm not even good at. I realized recently that this was a result of my extremely low self-esteem, since I have so little of it, and so little things in my life make me proud of myself, I end up reserving an unreasonably high ammount of my self-worth to how well I perform in Melee. I know I have other issues, and I know I'm not healthy mentally, but I'll get there eventually, right? I really liked your message about how there'll always be people who'll be glad you showed up. I put a lot of time into actually helping our local scene and I guess I forget that people really appreciate what I do, it's just so easy to forget when I keep thinking about how I'm "a failure" and "not worthy of love and respect".
Hi from Tokyo, I really appreciate this vid. 8:53 Your guess is right, Hayao (he is my friend) acts with the same attitude which he has showed in EVO even in small local tournaments. He himself said that what he has done in EVO is what he always does. Many of his friend watched Hayao in EVO and said like “Ok, he is the same as usual”. :D
Glad you pushed through for a reupload dude because this is genuinely excellent work. Keep at it, just a bump in the road. @@Inroads-r8cwhat passages were you planning on using if I may ask? Makes sense for the theme of the video and “speaking from the heart” and pursuing authenticity in one’s interests regardless of circumstances
More than anything, I was gonna use the context of the book as an example in and of itself. Rilke was so insightful in those letters because he had spent a long time with Rodin in his studio not long before Kappus started writing to him, so he knew what it was like to solicit advice from an artist you feel is greater than you, and the anxiety inherent in that. I cut it because I realized I was paralleling myself to Rilke, which came off as supremely arrogant.
@@Inroads-r8c I’m failing to understand the context of who “your” Rodin/Kappus would be in the context of the video, but either way I wanna say fighting games and poetry are huge interests of mine and your two vids have been ringing in my head the last two days since I found them I wanna give huge props for very intriguing videos
Heartbreaking that the copyright strike basically killed all the comments posted on the previous post. I want to reiterate and say thank you for these incredibly kind and comforting words. From a commentator for lethal league blaze at combo breaker 2024 it meant a lot to hear this. Thank you -Scooter dude
Great video overall but man I cannot stand the whole “seek professional help” stuff I hear from everyone on the internet when someone online is going through something. You do not need a phD to express sympathy/empathy to another person suffering. Telling them to seek professional help while knowing how expensive therapy is just paywalling a natural human experience. I understand that wasn’t your intention but that is what you’ve done. Again good video
