Love the video and your story! Thank you Scott for your service...it is appreciated greatly. Do you know of Lane Johnson? Regarding first ascents, I believe he climbed many of those routes (maybe not the mixed routes) in the early '90s. He was pretty Unsung in the old days, but a seriously driven ice climber from NW Montana.
I'm a little late here, but check out the film "Black Ice," which features Manoah, Conrad Anker and Fred Campbell climbing with folks from the Memphis Rox gym Well done film!
A buddy and I went into the Cabinets during the first Covid lockdown in 2020, happened to run into Scott and Marlin on their way out. Very cool to meet those dudes and the climbing in there is fantastic!
Only just found this video...what an amazing story...beautiful how Scott seems to have founded a 'mini' community there...and what routes !!!!! Hooe that you're still following your desires 😊
Great job on Black Magic! Just wondering... why leashes on this route but not in the other climbs? Not sure why all the hating on leashes, I personally am a fan of them.
Those are umbilicals / teathers not leashes. Leashes go around the wrsit. These are to prevent tools from being dropped but they cant be rested on. Matt probably used them because you have to switch from hands to tools a few times in the lower corner and its easy to drop a tool doing that
Very inspirational film!.......... I can relate as I suffer from a complicated GI disorder which has had a tremendously negative impact on the quality of my life.............A long time climber, I have not been able to get out for more than a decade..........now in my late 50s, I wonder if I will ever climb again? This film has inspired me to not give up and make it my mission to get back out climbing once more - thanks for sharing your story - !!!
This is really cool to me as I was born in Libby and I spent my young childhood in Troy where I still have family. We moved to the Bitterroot and i have lived here ever since. I have felt the same calling looking up at those mountains and I also started climbing. I've done a bit of climbing here in the Cabinets. I did a solo summit of snowshoe peak that was Amazing, as is all of Montana. Thanks for sharing your story.
Outstanding... 'Matt Black Magic'' shall be your moniker this side of the pond, for we have seen and now have spoken. The rock and transition 'phase' looked especially terrifying. Gibber gibber... Markus Fullonicus. x ;-)
Beautiful climbs but I am NOT a climber so I am in awe of you all! How wonderful that Scott overcame his health issues and was able to realize his dreams. Gorgeous job Nate!
This is a life experience really worth sharing. I wish the best to everyone going up the Cabinets and I hope to get there some day. Thanks for making everybody aware of this hidden gem
I live in Helena and work at Cedar Wood Villa in Red Lodge as a travel nurse. I want to explore caves, let me know where maybe some maps of cave locations ?
Great video! This is going to be my first year on ice and I'm absolutely stoked. This story really resonated with me and I see a lot of parallels to my own life. Thanks for the inspiration!
Proud to say I’ve put up an FA in this fantastic area! Can’t wait to get back. Glad you documented all of the hard work Marlin and Scott put into the Thunderdome - fantastic bit of film
