i've also gone through videogame addiction, its honestly so weird to me how similar it is to other addictions. my advice would be that this kind of big change all at once might cause a withdrawal, so its important to have people in your life that can help you trough this (better if they aren't online friends and you can meet IRL). good luck on your journey to you and whoever else is reading this

Instead of coloring the smoke you just stamp it as white, gray or light blueish color. You don't need any layer styles, but you could ad some gray instead of red through styles.

haha yeah that was my old Asus Gamer laptop. It is more that the fans are old, cleaning didn't help anymore. Those fans really started cranking up like crazy when screen recording. Was one reason that the my next PC was a dektop PC with a water cooling system.

Powerful trick! very clever - using cloud shape randomness, to participate in creation of a lightning streak (which in real life) clouds do partake in lightning. Genius my friend.. just.. genius 👏 If tip & tricks was celebrated like game of the year awards show - this would had been a BIG runner up, in the Indie Dev “Game of the Year” award.
You have an article on Affinity Spotlight in regard to your lightning brushes. In the article there is video of how you add the lightning to surround a person. I would love to learn how you did that but the video is in supper fast mode and I cannot see how you were able to create the lightning effect. I want to purchase your lightning brushes. interesting idea but real lightning is not one color, on the edges it is a slightly differing color both on the inside and outside edge and the brightness changes too : so its a good start but not realistic yet: i have been doing lightning for many years i wish you luck in perfecting your lightning.

Hi Mike, thanks for the question, just had to open Affinity myself to replicate what I was doing. :-) It's actually not a tonal selection but a opacity-selection. This is done by Ctrl+Left Click on the Thumbnail in the Layer-Panel. Cheers Reto

When I create the gradient map on my fire, it only applies to the white fire itself and then when I do the gradient it doesn't give the full gradient. Why is that? Also, I can't seem to get the gradient map to effect all the layers as you did in the video. Do you have any quick tips on understanding gradient maps and how some adjustments affect all layers and not just the one you have selected. Thanks.
To clarify - I made the smoke white with raster, and I've clicked gradient map, while I edit the gradient map the fire changes colour but only to the right colour on the slider, not an actual gradient. So it looks like it's just a regular overlay map. The 'gradient' doesn't actually work

At 0:13 you make a selection and somehow copy it into the layers panel and then expand it out - how did you copy that selection? what shortcut was used? Thank you!

hmm... I know how to do this with Photoshop and clipping mask. I tried to achieve this with Affinities "Mask to Below" feature, but I was not able to make that work properly with a gradient map. I assume you want the gradient map to only affect the smoke, so you could create a fire effect.
