Just tried it again... and it's still a HUGE nope for me. The animations are SO shitty, there is no way I can play that game. The char walks as if he shat his pants with a HUGE pile. It's ridiculous how bad the animations are.
I'm glad I played the original, it was such a blast all around. I remember salivating over the versions with the improved textures, but for whatever reasons I never got around to trying them. From this, it looks like I didn't really miss all that much. Might try that installer tho!
I wish someone would bring back Starseige, too. Such a great game. We're on our third rebirth of Tribes, but somehow nobody ever thinks to revisit the mech game that gave birth to Tribes to begin with.
I will say on the point about G-Tech: in the lore, they bought up the mostly-liquidated assets of AG-Systems prior to the events of Fusion, but proceeded to run themselves so callously they generously engaged in money-laundering with the criminal Overtel Corporation who were in control of the F9000 Race Commission. The investigation into Overtel and Tigron's dealings (which cancelled AG racing for a while) also revealed this of G-Tech, and what followed was so many criminal sanctions that the company was basically nuked from orbit.
First a friend's dad got a PC. Then they got a demo disk with the mechwarrior demo. Then, er, time gets fuzzy. Now we're arranging mech minis on a table and rolling dice a LOT
In 1995 my dad bought his PC, a Cyrix 150 and a Rage 128 and the pack in game was Mech 2 compiled for the Rage chipset, it was gorgeous, they even added the odd cool texture on the mechs.

What I loved about Mech 2 was it was a _simulator,_ like you got for aircraft. It wasn't a videogame, you felt like you were training to become a real mech pilot! 🤩
Still have my original DOS Mechwarrior 2 CD for the music! Same for Mechwarrior 2 Mercenaries. Remember waiting forever for Netmech to come out and downloading it with a 56K modem.
Right in the nostalgia, friend. I’m a multi-year veteran of Grand Council and TKZ leagues on Kali from the late 90s and the only game in the franchise that really hits as hard was MechWarrior 3. MechWarrior 4 onwards, with their hard point system (which isn’t tabletop accurate at all) just don’t bring the same fun factor as MW2 and MW3 did. Especially as flight stick support went out the window after MW4. Don’t get me wrong, MW4, MW5, and MWO are still appealing (although the latter’s model is frustrating as you either have to grind the hell out of events or spend cash to get the good stuff) but they just don’t have the same fun factor as their late 90s/early 2000s brethren with the exception of MW4 Mercenaries, because who doesn’t love Duncan Fisher?
