I think the Ultimate Crisis only works went the neighbour is the player because #playerbias so beastmen just fuck over the anti-player bias because you don't have a home lol
Soo big Monster, what is worse? The AI ignoring it's neighbours unlike when they neigbour the player, or the agonizing turn times when everything it at war with whom they should be? Maybe the AI has a max turn calculation time and they realy can't decide like you said... it's just to much... let's wait till there is less to do^^

Yeah, Grimhammer Old World turn times are hideous. Worse than ultimate crisis by a large margin, it seems. Also, who could have imagined spawning a crapton of armies would increase turn times...?

I'm with you on the crisis part. The beauty in Stellaris js that I can just turtle up and build a fleet while the Crisis has to move through all other Empires first. I have more than once retreated to the L-Cluster and beaten it back afterwards.
The old cult mechanic and manifestations were clearly based on the realm of chaos campaign when the portals would open up to spew a bunch of corruption into random territories far away from you. They made zero sense outside that paradigm

A bit late, but you need to back in time and take the black.pyramid instead as a special herdstone. Also, giant to make holes in walls, giving a highly flowrate on units and less damage from offensive spells on your traffic jam of units.
I Always Put The First Herdstone At Dietzershafen, As Trying To Ambush Gausser Very Rarely Works , Then The Second One At The Brass Keep Then The Third One At The Black Pit . I Find That Give The Best Coverage Of That Part Of The Map .
