Role of language in the formation of identity: Language plays very important role in the formation of identity, it is one of the most tangible symbols of culture and group identity. Language is intrinsic to the expression of culture. As a means of communicating values, beliefs and customs, it has an important social function and fosters feelings of group identity and solidarity. Similarly, language and identity are very closely connected with each other. The language variety that you speak as a native or mother tongue language is closely tied to geographical identity. Similarly, people make their identity through language such as a child as an example would be influenced by his family or more than that his environment, a child is like a white paper and people around his can draw whatever they want and it will shape him in future. When the family people speak language the child will copy and adopt his family language and try to speak like a family members. Similarly, with the passage of time the child adopts and uses the native language and so make his identity. However, in this way the child make his identity through language. A person may have several identity at the same time and each of which important at different point of time. They may have an identity as a women, sister, mother, and identity as a parents and an identity as an office worker, for instance, the way in which people display their identities includes the way they use language and the way the interact with people. Identities are not nature, however, they are constructed, and further the identity can be change time to time and cannot remain throughout life. According to Swann (2004-1401): According to Swann, a post structural perspective on language and identity, seeing identity as something that is in constant process. It means a person may change his identity with passage of time. Language shapes our identity: For internally shape our identity: This is the way in which we make our identities through language such as when we speak Pashto language, so we show our identity Pashtoon, due to our language we make our identity and people understand, he belongs to Pashtoon culture. However, our language itself shows our identities when we speak. For externally project our identity: This is the second way in which we make our identity such as when we speak Pashto language and the listeners are understand their identity, similarly, our language when we speak shows our identity.
