Thanks for the video! Scratch Morro Bay off the list along with Ironman Louisville (up-river against the current) swim portion. Dum dum race directors!

Even as a UK BCU level 3 qualified sea kayaker (trained to be competent to do sea trips, but not lead or organise, which would require level four or five) we were taught to be very aware of tides and currents, as an essential part of any trip planning. You need to know what the local tides and currents are doing at times related to the trip, so what happens if you fall behind schedule, take too long a break, etc, as this can affect safety. So the same should go for anyone planning a local swimming race, anywhere where there are currents and tides. They need to know exactly what the conditions will be throughout the race, as it is not like the weather, which is unpredictable more than a few hours ahead. Tides and currents are completely predictable, as they are based on the positions of the moon and the earth, and tables and charts will should the speed of water flow at all times, for all sea connected water ways, on all days, in the future. A sea kayaker is less vulnerable than a swimmer, being able to manage four to six knots, but even so, I experienced paddling on the Thames into a four knot current, and it is hard to make head way. For a swimmer, it would be impossible.

I think there probably just needs to be a bit more education or awareness about swimming in bodies of water that are affected by tidal or currents. You need to be prepared for a long swim if the current goes against you, panic is the only killer in these events, keep calm and keep moving but make sure you've trained for the conditions. A bit like preparing for a hilly, off road or windy course.

I avoid these types of swims. Totally unnecessary. Scratching Morro Bay off the list forever, lol!

I am so sorry that happened to you and the other swimmers. That had to have been so scary and traumatic. Sending hugs! I heard about it after I finished my 70.3 in Chattanooga. Come to TN or NC with your free entry.

Hi! I’m the kayaker that was helping you and the gentleman that was emotional. Your account of the swim was spot on! I remember everything you mentioned! Sorry you weren’t able to finish but really tried so hard!

The videos/rumors/whispers about the Morro Bay swim are starting to surface. Someone made a terrible decision in letting this swim proceed. Probably in the name of "business" and not "safety". They are extremely lucky it wasn't worse...like a death or even multiple deaths. While the lifeguards did an excellent job..Overall, I don't think they were sufficiently prepared. There will be an investigation, I'm sure, and rightfully so. A good point is the order that swimmers are launched. The newer swimmers (and quite possibly the weaker swimmers) are closer to the back...the current increased as the newer swimmers were waiting to start...this created (as you experienced) a potential for catastrophic events. The current increased as the slower swimmers entered the water. The sport is growing...which means there is money to be made...in my opinion, a decision was made to run the race based on business and not safety. I'm glad you and everyone made it out. Stopping was a wise decision my friend. Live to run another race!..keep pushing.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I was out there that day and didn't know what was going on in the water, other than it didn't feel right. I'm an SF bay swimmer, but this was totally unexpected. This was my first tri and I thought it was odd that I had people swimming nearly on top of me the last 1000 yards. In retrospect, I think it was due to panic. My 3 friends I did the race with got pulled from the water with DNFs. Somehow I made it through but it definitely impacted the rest of the race. Thank you to all the lifesavers in the water that morning. All the swimmers gave their all and should be proud of themselves for being out there that day.

Glad to hear you @mocmahone were able to get through that tough swim. Congratulations on your finish! That’s awesome! I also heard that Those who were seeded at the back (meaning: slower pace) got the worse of it all. The current kept getting stronger by the minute. The lifesavers definitely had their work cut out for them that day. Big thanks to each and everyone of them.

Great recap of the race! I also raced that day and thoroughly enjoyed it. The swim was just like you said....like an aquarium. The bike course was challenging with those crosswinds "nudging" us. :-) The run course was just plain HOT. It was a wonderful day and I hope to be back on the island again some time soon. Congratulations on your race finish. Your lovely family being there to support you is an added blessing. Keep up the great work!

Just like Arvin Eugenio, Jonathan Pascual was my elementary classmate and my seatmate because of the alphabetical order. Since when I transferred school, very seldom I see him, although we live in the same city. I had the pleasure of seeing him when he went home some years ago. Prayers are sent to your way, my dear classmate! God is good all the time! Prayers too for your whole family! ❤
