Il y avait la fatigue et le froid du matin dans ce labyrinthe tant parcouru comme une énigme que nous devions résoudre. C’était une réalité en trompe l’œil à partir de laquelle il fallait découvrir la richesse possible de la réalité. Au bord de la rivière recommençait le soir et le caresses, et l’importance d’un monde sans importance. Encore une fois dans le matin dans les mêmes rues, encore une fois dans les fatigues de nuits pareillement traversées. C’est une marche qui a beaucoup durée. Après tous les temps morts et les moments perdus, restent ces paysages de carte postales traversés sans fin, cette distance organisée entre chacun et tous. L'enfance, mais c'est ici, nous n'en sommes jamais sortis. Qu’est ce que l'homme ? L’esclave de la mort, un voyageur qui passe, l’ôte d’un seul lieu. Qu’est ce que l’amitié ? L’égalité des amis.

I think of Erland Josephson so often. It was most difficult for me when I read of his passing. I think I thought he would live forever, and I recall that I felt that way when Bergman died. It is, in a way, unthinkable--because Josephson's face, his voice, his majesty, if you will, are an essential part of my life.

EJ: Though I don’t quite like the idea that they call an ambulance as soon as I open my mouth. They laugh. LU: Is there nothing that you have never…? EJ: That I’ve never done?

And I think it’s funny that we should talk about funerals and illness, and we can hear - at least I can hear - an ambulance passing in the street. And after all, that is our life. And you can’t live a whole life with what is entirely spoken. The unspoken is a source as well. And maybe what we have talked about is that we mustn’t be afraid of the unspoken. To moralize a bit. But it’s not possible to cover a whole life.
