I'd be willing to drive my car there it provided they have a time machine where it can go back to 1940 and be painted with all those harmful EPA ozone eating pollutants and my car come back to the 21st century with a paint job that will last four times longer than a factory paint job.
I took an old Ford pickup truck to Earl Scheib in San Diego back in 1971 for at the time one of their $19.95 paint jobs. Their ad was said $19.95 paint job and we will pull out one dent. Bring in in by 9am and pick up at 5pm. I had this truck painted blue, and they painted everything, wheels & the bumpers as well. I picked it up and the paint was still tacky and was told not to wash it or park it under any trees for at least 30 days.
2022 The LAST Earl Scheib location in Anaheim CA painted a few of my project cars... Johnathon and his people did a great job. I always remove the bumpers, grill and trim from the car, gets much better results, the body and paint guys appreciate the effort of the car owner.
Wonderful memory painting two cars at different times; an Audi 80 and a Mazda rotary engine coupe. Can’t compare factory OEM of course. But helped me to “facelifted” the two cars and earned me some pocket money putting me thru university in San Diego. What fond memory.
When I was little my dad new Earl he said to my dad take off all the chrome and we spray the car it looked good my uncle loved it so much he had his done and Earl lived up to his name I paint anything for 99.95 and he did my uncle didn't take his chrome off his car and they sprayed right over it he was ahead of the time 😂
My friend had his 1970 Challenger painted there.. We spoke to one of the painters, who told us mask as much as you can yourself, and get a better job. We then offered the painter another 40 dollars on top of the 59.95... He said bring it on a Saturday, the boss is not here... Because he did alot of painting, the job was very nice, zero overspray.. No one believed it was an Earl Sheib job... Great memories
The cost of materials is astronomical and has been for years. You can’t buy a sleeve of 3M masking tape for $29.95 today. Not only that repair procedure’s are much different. I wrote a thousand estimates over the years to repair just this sort of thing. First they would remove the washer nozzles from the hood, possibly remove the headlamps and drop both ends of the front bumper. The fender liners may need to be removed if they are in the way as would any moldings on the fenders. Sand the hood down and feather the chips out, priming the hood, color coat the hood and possibly blending into the fenders. Clear coat the hood and fenders. Wet sand and buff as necessary and reinstall all the trim. Depending on number of chips priming and sanding more than once. It’s approximately a 3-4 day job. There’s probably 5-6 paint hours at the prevailing labor rate, plus paint hours multiplied by the prevailing materials rate. Twelve hundred for this job sounds about right. What did you make in 1970? I’m sure that it was a fraction of what you make today if you are still in the labor market. I never recommended to my customers spending money on purely ascetic repairs. I always wondered if you spend money to repair something like this, two weeks later you get rear ended and the car is junk. The money was spent for nothing.
I had my car painted by Earl Scheib in the late 70s. There were only a few colors to choose from for $29.95 but the car looked much better for that cheap price. They even painted the windows, chrome and wheels at no extra charge!
the paint job was okay for the price , not for today. biggest issue was the body pre paint prep. best to mask and do body work somewhere else. just have Scheib spray the paint.
I remember those half of pack of hotdogs were you only get four hotdogs for 99 cents but the hotdog buns came 8 buns in a pack so you had to buy two half packs of hotdogs to be even. That's how they could afford to only charge 99 cents for everything.😊
As l teenager who loved cars, l started hanging out at Earl Scheib to learn what to do for my car. I would bring in my car and mask it myself in line, then started doing light bodywork. l was hired when the bodyman quit. Then, l became a manager when he left. I spent about 5 years in the Baltimore shops and really enjoy fixing crazy messed up cars on a dime to this day. Basically, l wasted my life on cars. A lot off crazy things happened at Earl Sceib. I saw cars masked, sanded, painted and detailed in less than a half hour. The whole crew would jump on it if they got a $5 tip each. I had customers literally paint their car for a date that night. When paint jobs were $19.95, you could get a $14.95 special that was the bench slop left over in a 55 gallon drum from all the other paint jobs before changing colors. The manager would mix it up with a paint paddle and hang it up by the color chart. It was always a blue/purple color.
I worked in the collision repair industry for 44 years. Nowadays you cannot buy a sleeve of quality masking tape for $29.95. We rarely did complete refinishing except in the case of vandalism. I retired 6 years ago and I would say that a complete refinish including R&I of all trim would cost in the neighborhood of $4-5,000.
Your're right! I had my 64 Pontiac, painted by Schieb in 1970, for $39.95! Recently, I took my 2004 Camry to a paint shop to just repaint the hood, which is chipping! They wanted $1,200. just for the hood! How did Schieb do it?
Strange that the commercials with the song I remember best of all (with the little girl singing "BIIIIIIIIG" but showing a man's face instead, or a man singing it but showing a little girl's face) are completely missing from RU-vid.
I had may car painted in the Boston area for 50 dollars, in the early 80s. And I was quite happy with the service provided by their store. Obviously, some paint jobs for Ferraris and Corvettes could go for thousands of dollars. My Car was an old 2 door 1970 Chevy Malibu. Born when Detroit was still able to make good cars. Thank you for this fantastic video.
Thanks Earl, I put myself thru college buying repairing and reselling wrecked or damaged cars. Preparation was the difference between a quality paint job or a joke. 30 years later my family was shocked when I repaired my wife's totaled car in a couple days. They never imagined I knew how to do such things.
I remember taking my brothers 1978 Subaru wagon to one. First, we sanded and primed it with rattle cans at home. The next day we drove to Earl Schiebs and removed the wipers and masked up the windows and bumpers with newspaper in the parking lot. We were pleasantly surprised it looked pretty damn good. Yes, there was minor overspray here and there, but we took care of that at home.
We had an Earl Scheib paint shop in our city for a long time. I remember seeing the shop & sign for a lot of years. The sign is gone, but the building is still there. I worked with a lady that had her car painted there, and it was a terrible paint job.! 🎨 . Runs & sags everywhere.! Good thing she didn't pay extra for the runs.... !😂
Used to joke...Earl Scheib, I will paint any car for $29.95, $39.95 we won't paint the tires, $49.95 we won't paint the windows, $59.95 we won't paint the bumpers; etc.😁
I worked for Earl Scheib and his wife in their home in Beverly Hills one time .I remember it had thick orange carpet in a mud century modern .I worked with race horses when I was very young. He died of a lung problem I wonder if all those years around body shops hurt him.
