Born in 1960 in the posh end of Meir I just remember the steam trains at the station. Mystery tours that you knew where they were going to by which way the engine was facing. Usually Colwyn Bay =). We moved out of Meir because of the drugs 30 years ago. It's much quieter where we are but Meir will always be our home.

To get a train North, Stoke or Crewe but the station in Blythe Bridge is still open that runs the Crewe to Newark Castle in Nottinghamshire journey you can get. Goes Crewe, Alsager, Kidsgrove, Stoke, Longton, Blythe Bridge, Tutbury and Hatton, Peartree, Derby then another 3 or 4 stops to eventually Newark Castle.

Crikey, if he thought it was going down hill when this was filmed, can’t imagine what he thinks now. We’ve got the worlds problems brought in now, not just those from other areas. The place is a festering dump sadly compared to what it once was 😢.

My parents were moved to Macdonald Crescent when I was a week off 5. Our houses in Greendock Street Longton were about to be demolished. We had to all sleep in one room because the floor in the other one was physically collapsing. I went to pinewood country primary and then to Meir secondary modern, until I left School at 15 in 1966. Great memories 👌 My husband of almost 53 years old had our first date at Broadway, so we hated it being demolished. It's not the Meir that it was. Neither is Longton.

My gran used to live in 220 Sandon Road and my brother went to Longton High School. I used to play football on the airdrome while gliders whistled overhead. I've moved away a long time ago and it really upsets me to see what's happened to the place.

It was Flackett's Toy Shop opposite the Broadway. Hylands were and continue to be Electrical Retailers. I also enjoyed the train spotting on the bridge. We were always told to "get up the top" by the Station Master............

Worked at Hylands just after leaving school in the early 70s on the servicing side...can't remember them selling toys...it was all "white goods" and TVs oh, and I think they also sold cycles as well..happy memories though...it was a cracking place to work...really friendly people.

A great video. As an ex-Meir lad from the 40's to the 60's, I went to The Meir Infants over the bridge on Uttoxeter Road, and then to the Juniors and Secondary School in Colclough Road about a year before Fred did. As Fred says, The Meir was a fantastic place to live in with everything one needed. We may have been poor, but it was mostly a respectable place to live. Us kids weren't saints, but neither were we like the underclasses who settled later. Great stuff, Fred. Thank you.

Germans living in Czechoslovakia betrayed this country, supported Hitler's regime. They wished to incorporate great part of Czechoslovakia into the Third Reich. Terror of Germans in CZ territory during occupation was terrible. It was not possible to share the same territory with such people. After defeating the Nazis, german people, who hadn't been loyal to the Czechoslowakia, were sent to their dream homeland. It is clear that no bands were playing on their way.

Around 2000-2003 the whole thing about renewing the old canal was showcased as building some waterfront development "to rival" those in Manchester. What a waste. Middleport (whilst not the best of places) was great place to knock about in as a kid in the 80's and 90's . I have many friends who spent most of their lives their and it was a great little community. Shame, shame, shame on you people for destroying it!!!
