So there's this thing in Japan that is kind of like a halberd, or more a glaive or bardiche called a naginata. What I am trying to say is this sort of weapon isn't completely alien to them and he might have used similar before.
IDK man I guess it do depend on skill and tactics. I've never trained with a rapier but with a Katana I don't need to do more then move off center and cut your wrist off. Why go for your body? I wonder why when I see people train they both try to dominate the center. I understand in Kendo the rules don't allow it, but in actual duels why use 2D tactics?
something that although appreciative that most people will come to their own research and conclusions i'd like to state which is that greatswords/zweihanders/two-handed swords could be up to 2.3-2.4 metres with a practical weight, so it wouldn't be so far fetched to assume they could attempt to engage the end of the pikes without quite putting themselves in too much danger, from my understanding the way it works with continuous movement like you stated early on would be to use that slight diagonal swing repetitively until binding/swatting/(in rare cases) breaking the pike so you could move past the points and start going for heads, also yes this is a really late comment but if i'm only finding this now i'm sure some will see it
It's hard to convey the size of it? How about u tell us roughly how many inches they are..lol That how u convey the size of it...lol Its not rocket surgery ffs...lol
I am in Thailand. I use the app to translate. Under Thai law, carrying a knuckle-duster outside of the house is considered an offense equal to carrying a firearm. And of course, carrying pepper spray carries a 10-year prison sentence and a fine of 1 million Thai baht or 30,612.40 US dollars. But the minimum wage for a day is 9.19 US dollars, so the fine is quite a lot. And you can't carry a stun gun. But the government tells us to shout loudly or whistle when there is danger instead of using a weapon to protect ourselves. Of course, doing this is like calling people to look at the victim because no one will come to help until the incident is over.
2:52 I’m assuming those are there so that when you stab something extremely hard your hand doesn’t accidentally slip on your own blade plus it gives you something to push against giving you far more force to be able to push it deeper into whatever you’re stabbing it into
So, to touch on a similar topic - My instructor told me about an apparently popular type of longsword fencing tournament (in medieval Germany), using feders with a thin blade and no protection on the point (though the point was blunt) and only natural or white linen clothes, where only cuts to the scalp were legal, and they’d fight until “first red blossom”, as in the first drop of blood on their linen clothes. If you cut your opponent anywhere else, or injured them in any way more serious than a cut to the scalp, you would be heavily punished and fined. I’d like to ask what you think about that, as people still actually do it on occasion today, or so I’ve been told. My instructor told me about this other experienced fencer and fencing instructor who was from the east coast, but once came to the Sacramento fencing school, and he saw him with all these scars on his scalp (he’s bald). This is obviously much safer than what’s shown in this video, but I’m still wondering how you feel about it.
This would have been a really cool weighted staff video or even just a staff video. It is a terrible Ruyi Jingu Bang video. Please stop making click bait silliness and go back to attempting to be historical and insightful.
whenever the sensai gets excited after he learns something with the weapon still in his hand, his partner looks petrified likes hes gonna accidentally get stabbed lmfao
Interesting reference to buckler shields in the the war with Mexico reviewed : It is a destiny of raising up the fallen races, and administering wise and equal laws, wherever our dominion extends, not of trampling under the hoofs of the war-horse the prostrate red man, black man, or dark browed Mexican. If the Anglo Saxons have any other destiny than that, let them beware before they run upon the thick bosses of those bucklers of the Almighty, which have already drank up the blood of the proudest victors! -from the “war with Mexico reviewed, Abiel Livermore, American Peace Society 1850”
Love your vids Skall though I’d suggest reading/ studying Freud before attempting to bash him (sorry, psychoanalyst here). I think you’d be surprised on how many things you’d likely agree with him. Any way, love you my man, keep up the good work!
There's a good reason why we so admire the craftsmanship of bygone ages... they had nothing to do all day lol no TV, no radio, no nothing. No distractions, just make it perfect. As you can anyway, not like today nowadays we have Craftsman... (a little inside joke for my fellow Canadians)
Tbf, the gaurd isnt my primary concern, im an avid viking sword collector and if u know anything ab viking swords, many have small gaurds, my concern is the blade and the fact its under 2 lbs
i know im getting ready to get lambasted but im pretty sue ive seen images from the middle ages that depicted soldiers wearing a hooded hauberk like this. Maybe they had a helmet underneath the mail of some kind.
AI is great at answering questions about things that don't really matter. However it is programmed with the bias of it's programmers etc. So when it comes to really important things one has to be super careful.
