Your videos are so heloful Jounnie and your playing beautifully expressive! Can you tell me whether this harp has a square or staved soundbox please, and which you prefer for sound?...Thank- you!
4 месяца назад
Hello and thanks for Your nice feedback. The harp I play is Dusty Strings FH34 with square - or so called "hybrid staveback": manufacturing.dustystrings.com/harp-models/fh34. Dusty Strings have model FH34S with staved soundbox, too.: manufacturing.dustystrings.com/harp-models/fh34s. I like both models - the biggest difference is that the string tension of FH34S is a bit lower than FH34. To my fingers FH34 feels a bit more robust (which is a nice thing) but this is a matter of taste. FH34 harps are made of real wood and the wood material matters a lot. For example FH34 in walnut is a bit darker that FH34 in cherry. I prefer Cherry : - )

After much thought I ordered a Ravenna 26. I like the way it sounds, the way it looks, and it is among the most affordable of harps, while offering enough strings for anything I am likely to play.

They all sound beautiful. I love the song. What is it.?

Hello, Joan. It's mainly just an improvisation for testing the harps. But there's a short old melody from Brittany, too. It's called: "Er verc'h Margarited" - I have learned this tune from harpist Anne Postic. I try to use same recording devices on all of these "harp testing videos" - and the very same songs, too : - )

Hi, ML - I use "classic" Tascam DR-40 - it's a popular high quality recorder with build-in microphones. There is a new model out now called "DR-40X" with a better display.

Thank You for this positive feedback. The harp I play is Dusty Strings FH34 in walnut. Because of walnut it has very mellow sound and lovely, deep bass. Almost as good as what You have with Your Merlin harp!

Wonderfully evocative. I am really impressed with the recording quality!
Год назад
Thank You, Morrigan! The "secret" behind the sound quality of this live location recording is the combination of contact microphones (Internal Dusty Harp P20) and external acoustic stereo microphones of Tascam DR-40 recorder. With a contact microphones you get a nice "tight" sound without any disturbing sounds of the environment. And with the acoustic stereo microphone of DR-40 (which is placed about 0,5 meters from the harp ) You get a nice "airy and fresh" sound. The result is a combination (mix) of these with some moderate Eq and Reverb. Great You like this!

With the Dusty strings, the Crescendo is around $3600, and all FH are around the $4000-6000 range.

in all those years I still listen at harps on YT and still can't decide which I love the most. My heart is for the FH36, but all the DS are gorgeous and even the L&H are wonderful, not talking about the Teifi, or the Triplett, or the Thormhalen... There are so many wonderful harps out there!!! How can one take a decision? Only the money are the real matter for chosing one harp instead of another...

Thank You for Your nice comments. The harps on the background are own by Oideas Gael - The Irish Culture Centre in Glenkolumbkille, county Donegal in Ireland: www.oideas-gael.com/en/ I suppose they are "Starter Model" of instrument maker Jan Muyllaert irishharps.net/ In his own words: "In the early seventies I introduced the ‘student’ model. This was to provide a cheaper harp for beginners. It proved so popular 80% of my production was taken up by it. This meant a lot of time producing the same item, virtually removing all need for creativity so it became very boring. I discontinued that harp and replaced it by a better, if more expensive, standard model. This involves more satisfaction for me, the maker, and a nicer instrument for the client. They also have a better re-sale value!" irishharps.net/?page_id=41

If I was a rich man, If I was a lucky man, If I was a very talented man, I would like to live in a place like this, I would only own 1 harp, I would be able to play beautiful music like Thomas Walsh, I believe that the name Thomas is very the most important best name any boy or man could be called and if you do not believe then go and ask one of Jesus apostles, Saint Thomas and if you are still not happy and having anydoubts then go and as Saint Thomas Thomas Aquinas

I'm in Europe and Camac is much easier to get, also Ravenna is more expensive. But to me sounds so much better💔 I love brighter and more saturated sound. Odyssey it very decent sound too, but is just extremely ugly, for people who want to play in public or make videos with it it's a massive showstopper🙄🤔
