1:08 wasn't that one of those in field pop ups where the batter is automatically out? I only recently learned about that and I still don't quite get it.
That rule doesn't apply with 2 outs. The purpose of the infield fly rule is to prevent fielders from being able to drop the ball on purpose to get an easy double play (since the runners stay at the bag for tagging up) but if there are 2 outs, then there can't be a double play.
I think it’s just because turning and throwing normally from flat ground is so different from throwing a pitch, still wild though. Was it Jon Lester or someone that was so bad at it he always threw it underhand to first so he wouldn’t botch it?
He wasn’t closer to it than the runner, who was, you know, running, for one lol. Also it was a fairly routine play, I think you take that over a footrace to the 3rd base bag
