I have a second home in Saugatuck but do not rent it out. I follow council meetings and have for quite awhile just to see what is going on in the area. This is an interesting discussion. As a person who really has no skin in the game my perception about this task force is that it is going to be lopsided with people who would benefit from short term rentals. Also, I kept hearing this task force will not make policy but they are being assembled to provide a recommendation. If council wasn’t seeking answers from this task force then there would be no reason to appoint them in the first place. It’s an interesting topic. I will stay tuned. Again, as an outsider looking in this task force does not look like it’s going to be neutral!
Clearly, the current City Council is dysfunctional - and here it has cost the taxpayers of Saugatuck. Ken Trester, Jane Verplank and Chris Peterson chose to involve the city attorney in something that should easily have been discussed and resolved among the council members. This lays bare an unwillingness within the council to communicate and cooperate with each other. Obviously, that does not work for the citizenry.
Does anyone know what progress or decisions on the milfoil, Park St., the boulders, or any other important issues will be completed this year by our useless council?
The four incumbents running for re-election are very good at approving the minutes and the payables - but not much else. It’s like Green Acres without the humor. Give this group a pass.
