How wrong I was. This entire exercise is agony, and once you've removed the covers, be prepared for things inside to start disintegrating. The plastic is ancient, and the firmware is flawed so that if you've already upgraded to 2.10 and you want to do it again with a new device, it doesn't understand you and it starts being unable to recognize the "MTP player" as the thing it needs to upgrade. Basically opening a cascading failure of events both software and hardware that need to be fixed. I guess if you want to 3d print new posts once the hold-spring post snaps and crumbles like an ancient pharaoh exposed to sunlight, and if you really enjoy booting up a virtual machine repeatedly only to have it gaslight you about the presence of the player, go ahead and waste £40 on this exercise. But I don't recommend it, personally.

What is the laptop running? It has to be Windows XP SP2, or a virtual machine running the same operating system. Windows XP SP3 won't work. Also in general I found the process to be very finicky in a virtual machine, but if I can give you some tips, I will.

I was able to do this firmware update using windows xp, service pack 2 and windows media player 10. I didn't need service pack 3. I actually did a fresh load of windows xp on a laptop, (non-sata as it was easier due to windows XP SP2 not supporting sata). Also the versions of windows XP with SP3 had media player 11.. you cannot use that version as it also has wmp 11 security updates which you can't uninstall.

Ok.. I played around again, and was able to get this to work.. both on a 64gb SD and 128GB SD card. I ended up installing driver version, 2.01.00, and when it didn't work, I installed 1.30.03 (it supposedly removed the 2.01.00 driver). After a reboot, I still had no success with the firmware update.. it kept saying the device was not connected, even though it was there under device manager / windows portable devices / and "Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra"... so I selected that, and uninstalled the driver, unplugged the zen xtra, and right after plugging it back in again, I ran the 2.10.03 firmware update again and it saw the zen and did the update. I then did a 64GB format/OS load and a 128GB format/OS load.

I use my nomad i picked up for like 20 bucks, 60gb drive, for audiobooks. of course you have to cut them up into smaller pieces because the nomad doesnt like a 22 hour audiobook to be a 500mb file. This was the second nomad i purchased way back before i knew about ipods, the first one had a 20gb drive and looked like a cdplayer. Makes me wonder if they didn't plan a 120gb model of this but abandoned it, since you indicate it wont read past 120gb-ish of space.

Also, not sure if others have had this issue, but if I’m plugged into the wall outlet, and I run the player, it will eventually stop playing (playing a playlist) and give a brief “playback error” on the screen, and ill need to go back to the playlist and start from the first song....seems to do it at around 5 to 10 minutes of play time. So in looking at the player, I also noticed that the ssd to ide adapter, that has a hard drive led on it that lights up when hard drive is in use ( you can see it through the case), stays on constantly when its plugged in, but if I’m on battery it’s like I remember, the hard drive only runs for roughly less than 10 seconds every 4 minutes. Plug in the wall adapter, light stays on constantly, until unplugged. Subsequently, when on battery, the player doesn’t stop or give any errors and works great. I’m fine with the issue, as I can run on the battery and only charge when the players not being used....but wonder if others who have done the hard drive upgrade also noticed similar issues when plugged in. Now Wondering if when plugged in, the old hardrive was spinning non stop, because who cares since it has all the power in the world, and hardrives are made to spin and do so many times for years non stop on other devices. Anywho.....feel free to respond with info or questions.

The Notorious Pin has the most 🔥 pins in the game!!!!
@ussmillerco
@ussmillerco 2 года назад
Ok, so I can confirm this also works for Compact Flash (CF) to 44pin adapters using CF cards. I used a $7 cf to 44 pin adapter and a Kingston 256gb flash card. My hope was that all 256gb would be recognized, but it seems the firmware Max’s out at 126gb. Unfortunately I have several 256gb cards and a bunch of 16gb, 32gb, and 64gb CF cards of different manufacturers so my first test was this Kingston 256gb card. When I get time I’ll try the other brands like Lexar, sandisk and other to make sure there also bootable. I used the cheapest cf to 44pin I could find and it came as 2 pack and it was around $14. There are several flavors but mine was as I remember the vh.2 model. After I worked out the usb connection particulars in virtual box, the upgrade went fast and easy. Another interesting thing I did with this is replace the old worn out battery, with a much cheaper lithium polymer battery that’s about the same size as the old, has better specs, which I soldered the battery wires into the copper connectors in the battery well. Now I’m thinking the extra space could hold an additional battery, effectively doubling a rather already robust playing time. When I get time I’ll test the other brands of cards. Another benefit is how much less the player weighs. Anyway all for now.

128gb correction above.
@Phatgameboy
@Phatgameboy 2 года назад
Uuuuuu thank you for researching! Do you know where I can find a battery?
@ussmillerco
@ussmillerco 2 года назад
Well you have several choices......eBay has a cheap $10 1000mah capacity battery hqrp brand, which is a little less capacity of the original which is 1100mah, so you get a little less play time from it. It’s cheap so longevity might be less than the original so be aware of that. Or $15 ish from Amazon. But if you have a soldering iron, a lithium polymer model 603450 can be soldered into the two contacts the old battery connect to. Just for information on these lithium soft envelope battery, that model number, is actually the size of the battery in millimeters....and it goes like this, the first 2 numbers, in our case the 60.....is the heighth when laying flat on a table.....so 60, will be 6.0mm, if it was for example 4.5mm our battery would be 453450. Now the next 2 numbers (34) will be the width of 34mm, and lastly the last 2 numbers (50) would be length in mm so 50mm. A 6mm x 34mm x50mm happens to fit best in the factory battery well and is close to the original size yet offers a slight improvement on capacity (1200mah) over the stock battery. Now another interesting upgrade I’m planning, is to use the space created by removing the rather large 40gb laptop drive shown in the video (props to phatgameboy) and using the rather cavernous space in the hardrive well, to install a massive 965068 battery found on ebay for less than 10 bucks that should increase the factory 14hr playing time, to roughly 3.5 times that....which comes out to just over 2 full days of continuous playing time. Think about that.....if you play your jukebox say an hour a day.....it’ll take about a month in a half before needing to charge it. Being that it’s such a massive increase in capacity, and such a small draw, and considering we now have solid state memory, and not some spinning hard drive, I’m sure it’ll go longer than than. I’ve measured and that 9.6mm x 50mm x68mm will fit snug in the space, and I plan to run the wires from the battery well through the screw hole that no longer needs to hold the old 2.5” hard drive we removed. I’m probably going to use the old battery well for a charge module $3 eBay charge module/bms ( battery management system) as to not stress the onboard charging circuit and allow me to go back to the other battery setup later if need be. Just bought a duplicate zen xtra 40gb off eBay (goodwill seller) for $15 bucks with everything including a nice bag everything fits in, that happens to be in much better physical than mine is. They claimed that the battery was no good, but as in many unused lithium Batterys that are left unused, they simply need to be force charged above the minimum voltage they slip into, and won’t turn on the onboard charging system. Push in a little voltage into them to around 3.5 volts, and they come back alive and the Zen Xtra charges them, the rest of the way up. Battery seems fine so double score there. Just be careful force charging, and watch your current, that it’s not too excessive (keep it close to an amp or so,,,,,charging a shorted battery=burst/fire hazard) and only force it if voltage rises, no discernible heat created and only force to bring it up to what a fully discharged li-ion voltage is, and let the onboard zen charging system take it the rest of the way home. You do need to know what you are doing so if you dont learn before messing with lithium revival. I monitor current and voltage when I do this, if you can’t or don’t know how don’t. Heed warning as charging a fatally low voltage shorted battery will likely cause a potential explosion and fire and that water won’t put out. Nuff said there. Anyway, these player produce sound that’s second to none, along with cool playback features of EAX, that rival anything out there. Size of the players is the only real issue, but the benefits, plus price of a modded player is a no brained. Enjoy.

You probably didn’t brick it trying to dothe upgrade, it’s likely that the host machine is going into mtp, before the virtual Xp can and keeping Xp from recognizing, try disabling in device manager of the host machine. I did have real trouble getting xp to see the player and kept at it trying different things until the magic happened and it populated the upgrade button on the firmware. Also look under usb in virtual box and see if your creative is showing in virtual box.....whatever I did got it to work when for quite a while it wouldn’t. I would recommend before tossing in the towel, have a go on a dedicated XP machine and not VBox.
