Penn State did lose to a 7-5 Michigan team, but it was from a couple bad calls, but even if we forget that, it was a Michigan team that was always seconds away from a different ballgame. For example, they had the Ohio State game in the bag 21-19 until with 21 seconds remaining, Troy Smith scrambled for a TD. USC had a good offense, but so did Penn State, and Penn State's defense was like a brick wall that year. Penn State also beat up on a good Wisconsin team and a decent Minnesota team.
@@FuckPolitcs Doubtful. Just because they had high rankings doesn't mean they were the superior team. Don't forget in 1997 Penn State was #1 all year until November when they got the doors blown off by Michigan, but they weren't a bad team, they crushed Wisconsin and a very good Purdue team right after that. Would Penn State have won? Maybe not. But it would have most likely been close. Both USC and Texas had vulnerabilities that matched up well with Penn State. Remember, Texas had to come back to beat Ohio State while in Penn State's win over the Buckeyes, the Nittany Lions had control of the game from the second quarter onward.
I'll admit it was a game that could have gone either way, but a game with Penn State in the mix could have also gone either way (PSU vs Texas or USC vs PSU). And it was very possible, too, since a #1 and #3 national championship game isn't unheard of if the bowl wants to keep conference ties, or the #2 is bound to another bowl.
Florida State was a really underrated team, probably the best 8-5 team I'd ever seen. But also, don't forget, they lost two key players (Tony Hunt and Paul Pusluzney) for that game, and made a key mistake at the end (fumbling at the 1 yard line), preventing a game clinching touchdown. But Penn State still won anyway. And many of USC's victories were unimpressive, while Penn State handily beat some good teams. Maybe "crushed" was too strong an adjective, but I do think they could have beaten USC.
