Hi, we don't have that film sorry - I filmed this on my phone to capture the Soundbeam playing - I think it might be worth contacting Wiltshire Music Centre, they may hopefully be able to help..
So this video is ten years old(this is 2024), How come I've never heard of Soundbeam? Apparently it's not used by mainstream musicians, or I would be more aware of it. It is a fascinating musical tool...as some have said, it's like a Theremin, only on a much grander level. It's kinda gimmicky, but I can see how people with learning disabilities could enjoy and create music and sounds with this.
Hi Fiona, This film shows Soundbeam 5 - (now 10 years old) please get in touch via website - www.soundbeam.co.uk - to set up a demo - we'd love to meet up and explain anything you'd like to know about the latest system.. many thanks Adrian.
This is fascinating. I am a composer of contemporary music, and curious about working with Soundbeam. I was wondering how possible it would be to use a Soundbeam to control a modular synthesiser? E.g. have the rate of a low frequency oscillator controlled with one beam, and the amount of modulation could be controlled with the other beam? Kind of like Xenakis' UPIC system, very experimental approach to sound generation. But I realise this may be asking the software to do something it's not necessarily built for.
Hi Cameron, Thanks for the question, We're on Version 6 now, Soundbeam has been evolving for around 35 years... as the technology has improved, and we've moved towards a much simplified system which utilises an inbuilt and very large library of great instrument and sampled sounds - we've made it so that Soundbeam is accessible not only to players of all abilities but also to teachers, therapists, parents etc who have no knowlege and importantly need no knowledge of music tech, Synths, midi oscillators etc etc.....it's become a very user friendly and versatile musical system for everyone.. with that said, if you'd like to meet up on zoom or give us a call - we may well be able to set you up with a much older system (from the 80's or 90's) which will do what you are asking..please get in touch via our website www.soundbeam.co.uk - many thanks.
Ade, you’re bloody amazing mate! SUCH a good thing you’ve created there in a hell of a lot more ways than one. Also, where do I get the T-shirt? Big ups man. Colin (Blair’s mate and one time member of SBT on a Friday a few weeks back)
Hi Colin, Thanks for this - for the record... Soundbeam isn't my (Ade's) creation, it was imagined by the late Edward Williams and developed by a team of people over the last thirty years - (I did do a lot of the design of the latest system though... Soundbeam 6)... We had the T-shirts made up for trade shows and events, limited edition :0) - cheers...
Hi Willy, we are on version 6 now (this films shows Soundbeam 5) - still going strong - still evolving.. have a look at the website - you can get in touch there if you want more info.. www.soundbeam.co.uk
A couple of comments as the three visitors reflect on the visit to Soundbeam HQ for this session... Our session with Soundbeam was a lot of fun. Michael and Sarah were enthralled from the beginning to the end of the session - for over 2 hours. They both came home with big smiles. Sarah wrote 'flowers' when I asked her how the session went. . Michael said 'I really enjoyed making sounds - it has been a Great afternoon. I will come again. Thank you' The whole session was especially welcome for Sarah and Michael after having spent so much time in lockdown in their residential house. Thank you so much Adrian - it made for a very enjoyable, collaborative and engaging afternoon. We all want to have another play with the fantastic kit!

I have a few questions for you. What's the price on the soundbeam? Do you think it would be good for a blind or visually impaired person? Does the drums inside the machine include 808's or 809's? My last question is can you get them in the U.S? Thanks for your help.
+Zaire Johnson - Hi Zaire, thanks for your interest - perhaps you'd like to see more info on the soundbeam website where you'll also find contact details.. your questions... Price depends on the number of sensors and wireless switches - also whether you include speakers, stands microphone .. Blind or visually impaired? - Soundbeam can be played and enjoyed by anyone - I have certainly observed blind and visually impaired people playing soundbeam with great skill and enjoyment..... 808 809? - the Soundbeam 5 has an inbuilt GM synth (258 instrument sounds) and a sampler, which makes use of a library of 16bit stereo wav files - to which you can add. in the U.S? You can get Soundbeam anywhere in the world, see the website or get in touch for details on that.
I had a great time in great company, thanks all.. The main music featured in this film was an original collaboration made and performed during the last morning of the course by Ben, Jimmy, Joren, Mike F and Mike W - it was just one example of the wonderful and diverse musical creations which arose from the final group sessions.
Hi, This system is really interesting for all kind of people, valid ones as for people with disabilities, including people with ataxia. I know someone with a rare debilitating disease, Friedreich's ataxia, she is passionate of jazz rythms and music; this type of system could be a very good entertainment. She cannot move correctly her fingers but can move her arms to produce sound and music.
