I mean, something in between could work better, but the real issue is the lighting. You just can't fix everything with a simple color grading (especially without oryginal flat material).

I also thought that the gradient felt off, I know deadpool 1 and 2 had a grungy blueish tone to it and dp3 felt more different

I think DP3 looks flat sure, but to just up the saturation isnt making it better either. The movie is also shot flat too.

Every aspect of a movie is meant to help tell the story. The Deadpool movies have always had a bit of a dull look to them and the new one isn't an exception. The grading of DandW was perfect for the movie, character, and story the creators were telling. When you decided you knew better and changed the color to how you felt would fit best, you really just separated it from the other movies, changed the Deadpool look, crushed the blacks, and lowered the dynamic range. I know it wouldn't have destroyed the image so much if you had the raw files however it would still ruin the look that the creators were going for. If you make your own video or movie feel free to color however you feel best, however don't mess with someone else's creation and then criticize the original. Especially when the original was on purpose.

Your color grading looks amazing on this. This is an issue I’ve had with marvel and other films where there’s a lack of depth in color and lighting.

Yes colors do look bad but the main culprit is bad lighting. Everything is lit and there is no dark which actually pops out the colour even more than its inherent value. Bollywood movies started this then Netflix adopted it and now everything is slop...

I am glad to know I wasn't the only to notice. In my film program, we covered lens distortions, so it was immediately obvious the first scene it took place. I handt considered this to be done purposely. I was in the impression that either it was an amateur mistake, budget constraints, or just a lazy approach by the directors and cinematographers or a combination of either of those. Although it was a deliberately artistic decision, it was quite distracting and annoying, and I believe it served little to no purpose as a visual effect in those scenes. As for its use as a visual way to evoke or amplify an emotion, I personally feel there are more effective visual tricks and techniques. Thank you for your research into this topic and your explanation of what lenses they used.

I totally agree with George, he was _absolutely_ right to delete this scene. A little humor and banter is great, but when it strays into unexplained absurdism in a film that's meant to be this serious, it just messes up the tone even more.

Just had an important realization as to why the lighting is so diffuse and bland - all these movies are shot in virtual microled sets, see "How we Built an Unreal Engine Volume that competes with Amazon!" and "Shaddy Safadi - The Future of Concept Art". That's also why they're standing in a big flat void for most the scenes and fights.

Ironically a lot of the deleted scenes from the prequels would have made them better, while a lot of the deleted scenes from the original trilogy would have made those movies worse.

I've worked on recent MCU films in the color department as a color assist - they are mostly meant to be pretty low-con and color is kept within the normal defined spaces for theatrical distribution (P3 & Dolby Vision for digital and home entertainment) and is mostly just subtle beauty and finishing changes (brightening faces, bringing details out in shadows, general consistency between shots) Your edits don't work as its already a highly compressed version of the trailer and even you "returning" it to log won't help it, as the lighting (as you mention within the video) is meant to preserve highlights and keep contrast low. The real title of this video should be "The Cinematography of Deadpool & Wolverine Sucks"

thanks for the reply! i agree that its generally a massive lighting problem, and i wasn't meaning to be down on colourists, im sure everyone involved has the skills to do incredible work. and i believe that its generally a mandate from above to make things look this way for the comparison i was going for a sort of transformers 2007 look, to go extreme with it, so a little more saturation and contrast than would be considered tasteful. now obviously im just finishing in rec.709 for youtube, but other than working off of a compressed graded trailer i dont think ive broken the footage. ive probably gone so far its unnacceptable to modern tastes, but its not out of gamut or anything? but id love clarification on that. i appreciate it
@Xplozhun85
@Xplozhun85 4 месяца назад
@@calebgamman2 I understand the comparison that you're going for - the teal and orange look which funnily enough was popularized during the days of shooting on celluloid AND a digital intermediate (circa 2005-2011). As you mentioned, you're likely within gamut (rec709 for mobile and web) but it doesn't change the fact that your added intentionality of boosting colors clashes with the already muted lighting, costume design and general art direction of this film - color grading also works as a 3d mathematical expression of input and output values so just slapping something on there (even if you're using Resolve, which no offense, you probably do not have the hardware setup for a legitimate color managed pipeline) doesn't necessarily work as the original color value is already baked in and you're not mapping things properly with lossless/high bit rate media. But cheers on laying down some accurate points about the look of it - if you're going to go see this film I recommend seeing it in DolbyVision - it won't fix the pretty ass lighting of the film but the color will stand out a bit more and give you a degree of contrast and saturation that will feel more natural and considered.

You brought up some interesting points but I don't think your edit is superior for the most part. You crunched a lot of mid-tones into blacks. This makes stuff like the fight scene at 3:14 almost unreadable even if you think it's a better stylistic choice. We also lose all the surface detail on those nice super hero costumes which really cheapens the look and it almost makes this feel like a TV-show that couldn't afford proper costume design with nice surface detail. If you think that the desaturated skintones are bad, I think having oversaturated skin tones is even worse. The thing with the 2009 movie that's different from your grading is that the lighting on set was way better so you get a lot of variation in color temperature on the skin. Just boosting the warm tones/saturation does not emulate this effect but it could be argued that the lighting scenarios they chose for the trailer footage were kind of boring to begin with. A lot of scenes are clearly meant to portray an overcast day that would mostly create ambient occlusion shadows and you're trying to force a strong light source that just wouldn't be there. This makes everything look extremely fake. I guess there might be a middleground that could work better than your thing or the original but IMO you went wayyyy too hard on the blacks. These are just my personal opinions and this is still an interesting video that's definitely going to start some fun conversations. Looking forward to more stuff from you.✌ *Edit. Just to make clear: I think a lot of the observations you made are good and some your points are valid. I just don't agree with the way you might go about fixing these issues.

I thought about it a little more and there's a hard pickle to fix in post: I think the suits in the trailer are generally too desaturated BUT they don't need more contrast. The skin is also too desaturated but the saturation adjustment that fixes the suits makes skin look red. I wonder how hard it would be to do selective color grading on skin tones when you're working with video. It would be easy to do on a still shot but it's been like 10 years since I had to work with video and I don't know how good the tools are nowadays... I'm still sticking to my guns on the contrast thing. When you have two overlapping dark shapes like when Deadpool is fighting those guys at 3:15, your edit makes it way harder to read where things are in depth which is really bad for an action movie with a lot of fancy choreography. Your worst edit is at 8:48. I don't understand why you'd want to push the values and saturation like this. It doesn't make any sense for the context of the scene. She's bathing in this soft white light drinking tea and you made her 100% red with black shadows giving off an almost menacing vibe. I think grading like this is going to age really badly, kind of like how we look back at movies like 300 now. There's also a storytelling aspect to color grading. *Sorry for the edits. I'm just kinda rambling here...

@@seothis640I watched a youtube video not long ago explaining that the reason these movies chose flat colorgrading is due to their superhero movies embracing wacky colors. So in The Avengers, each characters have very colorful costumes which kinda divert the focus of each scene. If the scene is focusing on cap, Iron Man in a red suit might caught your attention first This led to Age of Ultron having a blueish tone over it to muddy the colors a bit so it fit in a closer color value. In Infinity War Iron man is paired with mainly red colored characters on a red planet, while Cap whose suit is black now fights in Wakanda alongside other black suited characters. And in the final battle in Endgame, more characters appeared so they got back to the age of ultron treatment, popping the colors might make everything too colorful and confusing, your eyes would be directed to random stuffs in the frame
