Well thank you for the alt-f2 r info I have had that happen a couple times. Just last night on Mint 22 there was a kernel update and I had the panel disappear and the update window lockup/be unresponsive. Could this alt f2 r possibly work to get control back from this situation also? I am back to useing Linux and am basically a noob as the last time I used Linux was 1993 and I think the version was 2. So doing my best to get to be a Linux desktop user and maybe later this year build a small home server to teach my daughter some non Windows skills.

Look a lot like they added Rainmeter to Linux. I've been using it with Windows 10 on an old 2015 Dell XPS desktop with an i7-6700 and it adds some nice functionality. Glad to see they've add something similar to Linux.

Greetings! Here is my recent story. I purchased Raspberry Pi (RPi) 5 to have a small machine, to be used as a “sandbox” I could learn Linux without risking an expensive laptop. So far it turned out to be a horrible decision! First of all, I could not understand if I can boot RPi from an NVMe SSD directly. I watched a bunch of tutorials on youtube and all of them use an microSD card as an “intermediary”. I flashed the NVMe with a Home edition of ParrotOS and decided to give it a try. My problem is that I do not have a proper HDMI monitor. Fortunately, I have two portable monitors. I wasted probably two hours figuring our that one monitor (1080p) for whatever reason just doesn’t work with RPi 5! Surprisingly, a more expensive 4K monitor did work! However, for whatever reason the OS did not boot into a graphical interface. The terminal font was very small! I do not know why, but I thought that there is no graphical desktop installed at all. So I installed KDE and rebooted. Still nothing!!! Fortunately, I found these commands “sudo systemctl set-default graphical.target” and the system finally booted into the graphical desktop. But it was MATE desktop, not the KDE, which I installed. So I have two desktops installed on this system: KDE and MATE!! Yesterday I tried to set up a remote connection, so I could login into RPi from my laptop (without any portable monitors). Another day completely wasted! I managed to setup a remote connection to the terminal via PuTTY. I tried to set up RealVNC to have a graphical interface. I got a black screen instead! While trying to figure out what is going on, I messed up something (I do not know what). MATE desktop disappeared. It seems that some manager called “LightDM” stopped working! I have no idea what is going on. When I connect the portable monitor, I get KDE desktop now, which is super-slow and completely unusable. When I connect to RPi via RealVNC, I see a login page on KDE desktop. I login and then see just a blank screen with a mouse cursor. I do not know what to do anymore. I have no idea what is broken or what to test.

Do you know why when I double click icon on Panel that the Software Manager window ghost fast over and beyond the right of my desktop view. So I cannot see an open Software Manager window? Cheers

Not understanding why you would double click a panel bar icon, or applet ...they are meant to be a single click ? If your software manager still having issue , try switching mirrors. Also if no luck ...try the Linux Mint Forums for support. Regards, t

Nowadays there are too much distro's. I started in 1995 with debian. I bought the debian gnu/linux bible that came with a cdrom. In the first debians you had dselect to install/update software. The bible explained it very well and 1 of the major problems was resolved for me. Now, almost 30 years later, I stil use debian.

I did a clean install of 22 but had problems with suspend and shutdown making my laptop unresponsive and wouldn't wake without a cold shutdown. I know some people have this problem with Nvidia but my pc is Intel. LMDE did the same, so I returned to 21.3. It might be a kernel problem.?
@linuxforseniors
@linuxforseniors 2 дня назад
Interesting, So If 21.3 works for you and your Linux Kernel is 5.1x.... instead of 6.xx then you may have something there on the Kernel, don't really have an answer for you , maybe try Linux Mint Forums, maybe someone else has an answer. Regards, t

WHY do you not get paid for your videos? With all your vids- you have to be drawing a nice crowd that would pay YT folks well with ads.. (and since they're forcing them on eveyrone else-- you could make a good chunk with them.
@linuxforseniors
@linuxforseniors 2 дня назад
I really did not want all the politics that go with that, like having a paid sponsor... thy would most likely ask you to pedal a product or service on every video I make , and be at their schedule to post things. I have a sick family member that I have to be available, so just a couple of reasons. Plus RU-vid does advertise on by videos which I do not get paid on , based on their agenda...that I have no control of, since they are providing server space.... that is the price I pay to make these video's for the community.

What is category from ram? Does that mean you can run it in ram?
@linuxforseniors
@linuxforseniors 2 дня назад
The category RAM, mostly just indicates that the computer image in most cases (iso)...can be loaded into RAM, which speeds things up a little ....but is susceptible to power loss, since when computer is turn off by accident or you select power off... your RAM is cleared.

Can you help me ask the correct answer. Don't know linux. I have wndows 10 expiring 2025 and I want to try linux but don't want to lose some apps and data from windows. How do you do this or direct me to where I can get this answer please
@linuxforseniors
@linuxforseniors 3 дня назад
Linux apps are different from Windows thus not the same , but Linux has quite a few applications that do the same job like LibreOffice will open Microsoft Office files as an example and save in that format also. Now personal data on the other hand... like photos, documents and pdf's for instance can be backed up to a USB storage device, and put back on a Linux drive, I have even used a Linux Live Media to copy non encrypted Windows user personal files directly from a Windows partition. Hopefully this may answer most of your question's. Regards, t

If you want an identical desktop to Windows 7 then you can not get around of the KDE Plasma environment. I am now since 4 months on Linux and I recomend only two Distros which I have myself on several machine. First choice is Tuxedo OS and second choice is KDE Neon. Kubuntu would be my third choice but I have not tested that one. Tuxedo and KDE Neon both are german Distros and base on Ubuntu which again bases on Debian but have the Plasma desktop. That is the most userfriendly and similar to Windows 7 layout and functioning. Tuxedo is from Augsburg and KDE is from Berlin I believe. Tuxedo is the Distro of a company similar to the US System76 which offers their own Distro Pop OS and tests all updates before releasing them in order to avoid bugs. So they have slightly older kernels and stuff in order to ensure stability. KDE Neon has allways the latest and greatest and on Wayland graphics is buggy and has some crash logs. On X11 graphics I had none crashes on KDE Neon. Its not the system crashes but some parts of their plasmashell and I had problems of screen wake up on standby on KDE Neon. No kinks on Tuxedo since they test it before releasing an update.

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place, I very close to 80 and new to Linux, so if I posted the wrong questions or at the wrong place, please forgive me. I just install Zorin 17 on my HP800 mini PC, I want to use it to stream to my TV, when I hook up a HDMI cable from this mini PC to my 10 year Sony TV, picture is ok but no sound, I went into the sound setting but can't seem to find a way to get sound to my TV. Can someone please help me?
@linuxforseniors
@linuxforseniors 4 дня назад
HDMI output ? Not sure If I can help.... Now Zorin can output all signals ie Video and sound , I output to a 43 inch Smart TV via HDMI . However not that familiar with your HP computer model , but since you mentioned your Sony TV is 10 years old, does it have apps on the TV, if not maybe it's not a smart TV and just may have some incapability there, just guessing ....So you say the Video is ok , then I suspect the issue is sound output or processing mode's on TV or computer, possibly HDMI incompatibility between the two units or maybe even the HDMI cable it self. Now you also mentioned streaming , if for instance you are trying to stream Netflix or others from computer, have you thought of just purchasing a Amazon Fire stick or Roku stick ..those connect directly to HDMI ports on TV .... However, I will post this if someone has better answers ....and If some one responds, I will post the reply... if that helps. Best Regards, t

I am already using it for 2 weeks now. I like it but there are some problems that annoys me: it would randomly sleep after some inactivity even though I have disabled it in the power management and it would take very long to be back again. Secondly, the sound would randomly hums so loud and would only stop if I change the audio source. That said, I am quite satisfied with the smoothness and integration.

Congratulations on producing some of the best jargon-free, easy-to-understand Linux tuition videos anywhere! Your target audience may be seniors, but your Linux tuition videos are ideal for anybody of any age wishing to learn more about Linux. I discovered your website after visiting a blog on Linux Questions forums. The blog featured “Peppermint OS-(Devuan): The Ideal Linux distro” and gave a link to your “Peppermint OS Fully Loaded” video. The only difference with the Devuan version, compared to Debian, is that it does not use systemd. I have been using Linux Mint for many years and I really like it because it is just so stable and reliable, plus it is so simple to use. However, I can see that Peppermint OS does have one BIG advantage for users over Linux Mint, namely that once Peppermint OS is installed, that’s it! Basically just install it and forget it, subject to performing regular updates (see below). Upgrading from LM 21.3 to LM 22 etc can be hazardous, as users on various Linux forums can testify. Because Peppermint OS uses a hybrid rolling release, the system is always up-to-date and therefore there is no need to do a fresh installation. Peppermint OS will just keep on running, provided that the hardware continues to hold out. UPDATES: To update Peppermint OS, simply click on the blue Peppermint Update button in the bottom panel. This opens a Terminal for Simple Updater, where the user password is given and the software repositories are checked for available updates. The whole process is semi-automatic and all the user has to do is type “Y” and press “Enter”. The Terminal closes itself when the updates and tidying up operations have been completed. In October 2025, Microsoft will cease support for W10 and considerable pressure will be applied to existing W10 users to go out and buy new, expensive hardware just so that they can have a license (not actually OWN) to use W11. Furthermore, looking ahead, it is almost certain that Microsoft will go the way of Adobe and Google etc and introduce the subscription model, Software as a Service (SaaS), just like they already do with Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365). (Just as an aside, do note that LibreOffice, including Writer, is pre-installed with Peppermint OS Fully Loaded). Eventually W11 or W12 or Microsoft W365 (or whatever MS decides to call it), will only be available via subscription. That will be the new reality for Windows users wishing to use MS software. I suspect that there will be a considerable number of current Windows users who will be interested in making a move to Linux, where they can continue to use their existing hardware, the software is free, the security is excellent and they do actually OWN their own PCs. If you can find the time, would it be possible for you to produce another video showing the complete installation process for Peppermint OS Fully Loaded using the Calamares installer? I am sure that such a video would be extremely helpful for many Windows users and others wishing to migrate to Linux and Peppermint OS in particular. I am sure that the many sons, daughters and other family members who currently act as administrators for the Windows computers of their seniors would be eternally grateful to you for performing this invaluable service! Many thanks and do please continue with your excellent Linux tuition videos.
