I graduated high school the year this video came out and was in AVID until the program collapsed at my school. I was part of the first wave that started the program my freshman year and it had very good intentions but was ultimately a partial waste of time. It absorbed a very important time slot in my high school schedule that prevented many students from taking classes we really wanted to and didn't have much to offer past sophomore year to justify it. Every week we would rinse and repeat the same monotonous things. We would break up into study groups based on specific set subjects like math, science, history, etc. This was good in the beginning but became a problem when some students were taking Algebra 2 and others were taking PreCalc, but we all had to sit and help answer questions we had no context for. There were college students who would help facilitate these study groups but they turned out to be rarely useful. Every week, they would grade the organization of our binders and I would always get docked because they wanted me to fit everything into one binder and I preferred to have two binders split between my A-Day and B-Day classes. They didn't like this for some reason 🤷♂️ This would repeat every week without fail until we were all just sitting around wondering what classes we could be taking instead and demanding out of the program. AVID definitely helped us explore college options and the initial organizational skills they taught were very valuable, but ultimately the program slumped and left students upset they were expected to do the same three things every week instead of something they actually wanted to do. Not to mention, college was a complete waste of time as I got my degree in Political Science and the only job I got in that terrible industry told me my degree was a non-factor in their decision for hire. My advice? Go do an apprenticeship instead. I'm almost 30 now and wish I had known about them in HS and prepared myself to pursue that instead. TLDR: AVID was great freshman and sophomore years but became a total waste of time junior and senior years. College ended up being a waste of time as well and I wish I had become an electrician instead.
Reflecting on my experience from the program I can say you are definitely right. I was in AVID from the 7th grade all the way to 12th grade and the same monotonous drilling of binder checks, c-notes, and TRFs. My Jr. and Sr. years were especially stressed that I had to apply to reach schools and in 2019 I got accepted into a liberal arts college and graduated 4 years later with a Bachelor's in Rhetoric and Public Discourse and after all that sacrifice I'm still stuck working retail. I can say that AVID is an irrelevant program and people need to get with the times and explore other options for skills that are ACTUALLY USEFUL later in life.
