Wait… so you did another video talking about uv lighting solving Dino’s. But you didn’t mention the uv light here. Did you decide it wasn’t ultimately as helpful?
Yeah, the dinos went away after a couple of weeks with this method, but came back again. Ultimately, I had to resort to using a UV sterilizer to keep them away.
eBay. Just search Fish Tank Comb. Then I just cut to size and sandwiched between two pieces of acrylic so it can hook on top of that section of the wall.
I'm going through it right now. The tanks been set up for 4 months. Dinos came in and are all over the tank. I tested PO4 and NO3 regularly with Salifert and API test kits. I couldn't make out any colors to check. I finally splurged on the Hanna Po4 and No3. Po4 and No3 were at 0. After dosing my tank and feeding aggressively Po4 at .07 and No3 at 5. I'm just curious how long it takes to be eliminated.
After about 2 weeks they went away, but came back again. Ultimately the only way I could keep them from coming back was using a UV sterilizer. Sorry about the late reply, but hope you already have it solved.
Great video!! I am fighting with dinos right now myself. I've used many of the methods you mentioned in the past. I am pretty sure that my problem started with nutrients bottoming out. I currently dose both nitrate and phosphate. I also use Dino-X to get them under control quicker. Again great video.👍🏾
@@TheHelicapt Yes it did work to kill off the dinos. But it's still a constant fight. I have just been working with adjusting lighting levels to keep it down.
@@TheHelicapt It's just a little bit that shows up on the circulation pumps and cords. But it goes away after a week or two. It's annoying, but at least it's not getting on the rockwork. I feel like once you have them, you never truly are 100% free of them.
@@skippersreef4009 meaning pretend thats not there at all no overflow no cutouts so lower intake is the only intake kind of like say hob filter with intake in watere
@@scottrobert2724 ah got it. Yeah I’m sure you can just have a lower intake. I don’t have that. I wanted to have an overflow to pull the surface water where oily residue tends to build up.
@@skippersreef4009 yes saltwater absolutely but freshwater tank only here. can pop a strainer on and any fry can even put a strainer on. Im building aio now so im gonna use overflow and drill a hole for lower see how it is. i can always plug it
I was quite lucky with mine, my tank has been set up for about a month and I had live rock and sand so I stocked a clean up crew and was feeding them. After about a week and a half some dinos started to pop up which initially I thought was algae because of the brown colour, I researched and learnt about dinos and luckily I tried adding more food to up the nutrients, I also moved the lights higher which has resulted in them nearly all gone and algae has started to grow in its place. It has now been gone for just under a week and looking promising so I’d recommend trying this and dosing beneficial bacteria :)
New subscriber - i respect your honesty and i had similar Dino issue due to zero Phosphate but Nitrate was good. I had an ineffective clean up crew so my feeding was small and inconsistent. I listened to bad advice from lfs on phosphate parameters and clean up crew. I was told zero phosphate was an excellent number. Dino free now as I feed 2x a day. I do not run the protein skimmer all the time and a very effective clean up crew. Turbo and Mexican Turbo snails, Hermit Crabs, Porcelain Crab and an Emerald Crab. I learned most of this before I set up my tank but getting from setup to current was very challenging and frustrating. I was chasing temp. fixes and not knowing how to resolve the cause. Have a good day.
Thank you for that comment. Although some make it look easy with posts of beautiful photos of their tank, in reality this is a very difficult hobby IMO.
@@skippersreef4009 without silicone on those back baffles your not seperating the stages, water flows around the walls since there is no seal. Silicone the acrylic piece on all the edges underneath and along the backside then place it in the tank. Then you can run your final taped line silicone front seal.
I turned off light and dip coral out and back in hydrogen peroxide. I’m willing to kill Corals to get my perfect tank. I’m the the ruler of that tank not the Dino’s.
I'm debating on this one or the dcs2000. I just seen a video where the dcs 2000was making a pretty loud noise but I do believe that's it's the newer pump. Decisions, decisions....
I did have to soak it in citric acid and clean it real good after it shutoff on me 6 months in. So a bit disappointing. Take that as you will in your decision.
Not really normal for them to change colors. But their color is lighter when they expand versus more closed up. If it’s expanded out, I wouldn’t worry as long as it’s mouth stays closed. Open mouth is not a good sign. When their whole body is closed up all the time is not good either imo. Although I’m not an anemone expert by any means.
Agreed. There are controllers out there that do more than just switch things off and on and I have no experience with those. But there are definitely IMO overpriced controllers that simply switch things off and on like Alexa.
Hi how do you take a sample of water to view under the microscope? Do you just take the tank water or you have to siphon some Dino up and shake it to break it up before viewing? I say many video to just identify under the microscope but they dun teach how to obtain the sample. Thank you
Thinking about trying that UV unit for my ostreopsis issue. Did they come back quickly after stopping running the unit? Hoping it would blast them dead and I could remove it altogether. Curious to hear your thoughts on its effectiveness and timeframe you ran it etc…
For me they keep coming back after a few months of no UV. I don’t know if it’s my water conditions or just the fact that I stopped UV. It’s definitely effective in killing ostreopsis though. I would say within a week or two they’re no longer visible in my tank. Hope that helps. And good luck. I hate 🤬 dinos!
I am going through very similar problems on both of my tanks. Both tanks were the result of too effective skimming, and chaeto growth and laziness on my part to test (Hanna) NO3 and PO4. Ultimately, I bottomed out both tanks and thought my problems were simple algae. Surprise! DINOS!!! Im now dosing nitrate and phosphate, got rid of the chaeto, turned off UV, carbon and other reactors. Ive lost some inverts and corals in the mixed tank. The FOWLR tank is unaffected and responding to treatment with DINO-X. Like you, I made similar mistakes. The struggle is real.....REAL EXPENSIVE!
not looking to fight dinos with it just cloudly water its very slightly cloudy and has been for a month. you think your water was any clearer i can't tell from the video coz my water isn't cloudy with lights on(only on while testing the new leds that arrived) with lights off which is always rn coz i'm running a 4+ months lightless cycle its cloudy
I wouldn’t say it made my water clearer. I think it really depends on why your water is cloudy. I’d try to figure out what is causing your water to be cloudy.
YES IT WILL MAKE YOUR WATER WAY CLEARER , I ALSO USE IT FOR MY KOI POND TO KILL OF FREE SWIMMING ALGAE (GREEN WATER) AND IT ALSO KILL ANYTHING LIKE THE ICK WHEN IT ON IT FREE SWIMMING STAGE GET A 30 WATT YOU COULD DO MORE GPH ON IT 8 WATT YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE WATER LIKE 200GPH
@@junito1957 it cleared up my water no doubt. thanks for the input. i don't buy into its ich treatment capabilities as it simply makes no sense but thats no biggy. i also got an ich outbreak during this month so yes theres more proof of the uv not preventing ich as that is what i'm treating currently
For the acrylic I used Weldon16. It's actually not a glue. It bonds acrylic by melting them together I think. Glue or silicone won't adhere to acrylic very well.
Bubble tip nems are famous for not messing with corals and for being the most reef safe nem out there. Doesnt mean its universal. I think its up to you.
Thanks! That's good to know. So far so good. Just keeping a close eye on them. Not feeding for now bc I don't want to encourage them to stay. Although I can always just move the corals.
Hmmm good point. I also have been adding Tropic Marin Trace A and K until the dinos returned. And I haven't been doing very many water changes the past 6+ months.
I really do like the way the tank looks you did a great job on the tank My saltwater tank does not like any thing like yours my almost looks like a freshwater tank I don’t no because of the lights or what the clown fish look amazing I did get 2 new fish one bigger clown fish but one straight And also a tang I don’t no if you are open to send me a email I wold like to introduce you to some new fish friends I also did have some problems with my salt level it was also dropping but it takes some time for the thank too mature because mines kept dropping and I had to add more to it, but after the third or fourth water change you will see a difference, also one of the reasons why the algae and I tones are growing, and I just found this out myself, light is too powerful try picking it up higher from the tank My email is Josephstts@icloud.com
Thanks man! What lights do you use? I do think salinity is one of the most important parameters to keep somewhat stable. Glad to hear you're getting more fish in the tank! I need to add a few more to this tank but scared they'll fight and kill each other.
@@skippersreef4009 as of now I have the fluval Aquasky I did it was just on top of the tank but I pickup some cans 3 “ tall to pickup the lights and now I see the Dialtone almost gone I don’t have 5% of the steff you have on your tank I’m only runing A heater, canister filter and a air Stone bubbler that’s it noting more and abut 60 pounds of live rocks and 2” San bed You are doing it right you have everything you need for a saltwater tank

Hi there, I've been binge watching all your vids. Really inspiring! Could you please share the lighting schedule and intensity for your XR30? I've been using WWC's schedule, but I'm struggling to get any SPS growth.
Thanks glad they're helpful to you. Maybe I'll include it in a future video. I run at my XR30 at 85% max with blues at 100% and red, green, white all at 24%. I think it's same as WWC AB+? It's almost 12hours on total with 2 hours ramp up on either side. Frankly I'm not super happy with growth. I'm seeing some but maybe I'm just not patient enough. I feel like others are growing acros faster. I don't know. Maybe it's like that for all of us lol!
@@skippersreef4009 Hey, I’m using exactly the same schedule haha. Glad to know I’m not the only one then. I’ll do some digging around on the forums and let you know if I find a better one.
Anytime! I got it on sale for $99. Normally they run $150-200. As you can see from the video it was pretty small. It since has grown a lot and split into 3 and all are bigger than this.
You performed the ONE correct thing that most hobbyists DONT do-I.D. the type of Dino you have! Thats step one. Step two is matching the wattage to the water volume of the tank. Step three is FLOW. Not enough or too much and the UV wont be effective. Dont ask me how I know.....lol
Haha thanks! Those are definitely keys to beating dinos. But have to admit I could have done those things much earlier and probably would have saved some corals.
Like 6 my friend that fish got to together quick I have now 3 clown fish to small guys Orange with white stripes and one big one Orange colored one white stripe the new keep keeps away and I don’t no why the tank as you know is a 65 gallon so a lot of room for all the fish but stll the fish only swim in one particular area and the big guy is always hiding any tips for me and also where do you get your fish online?
Yeah even with a 65 gallon tank it's hard to keep a few clownfish together. Either a pair or a harem (10+ to keep the aggression spread out) - even then it's hard to predict if/how they will fight. I get my fish from LiveAquaria.com. Thanks and wish you the best with your tank man!
