Welcome! I’m Rogan, a deaf queer that has many interests. Here, you’ll find videos ranging from book wrap-ups to the deaf experience (sign language linguistics, ASL lessons, and more) to queer topics (anything from sexuality to queer history to queer signs). I enjoy creating videos that educate people about many different subjects, and bringing in others for those that I cannot.

How I identify: Queer, but I also use bi and pan. My pronouns are they/them and he/him.

Created a few videos for Ai-Media and featured on the following -

I'ce been hearing my whole life, but I've had a bit of a mild interest in sign language. I feel like written sign would be more helpful if there was actually one universal/auxilary/international sign language that could unite a global deaf community rather than people filtered by the hearing languages of where they live, and then further filtered by the individual sign languages in each place. I do think there is use to having a written form of sign. Hearing people write things instead of just having recordings of everything because it takes less resources (including more modern ones, like storage and bandwith), and with something written out, it is (in my opinion, theoretically) easier to skim back over if you need to refresh or find specific information. I could also see utility if you're in a deaf community wanting to write things (even quick notes) and not wanting to have to switch to the written form of the local hearing language. Spelling and fingerspelling seem to be a strong part of sign languages anyway though, so I'm not sure how much benefit written sign has over just writing in "normal" writing. (Finger)spelling is potentially an issue that makes developing a universal sign language difficult, but I think looking to, like, Chinese and maybe other logographic language systems could be potentially helpful.

Sure but remember that all languages change from the bottom up organically. Do not try to "force" it. There are too many Deaf individuals, mostly concentrated at Gallaudet, who have appointed themselves as the arbitrators of what the "correct" sign is. Let it happen organically and in a few decades or maybe less,, you'll see the shft take place. Forcing it will cause people to back off and refuse to change.

I’m a Teacher of the Deaf and I count myself VERY fortunate that most of the Deaf people I’ve met and know have been very welcoming of me and my awkward signing. I try be very mindful that I consider myself very fortunate that some have allowed me a glimpse into this wonderful world, but I realize that, as a hearing person, I will always be an outsider.

For my an experience, I met two times from Jehovah’s Witnesses. I was puzzled how they know my address. But before that. I met one of Deaf girl who is JW. During Christmas time before our vacation started. Someone gave her Christmas gift. She can’t accept it. We realized that she’s JW. We respect her. We haven’t heard from her for a long time.

As an ASL student, I've shifted over time from "I prefer PSE, I don't want to study the grammar" to slowly falling in love with the grammar of the language. I feel like ASL grammar is like using the signs to draw a picture of what you're saying, while PSE and SEE feel more linear. But I definitely have run into negative attitudes towards learners in the Deaf community, and conversely, I've seen Deaf folks using more PSE/SEE structures, often mixed in with ASL. For example the sign for "and" I was told is a SEE sign, but Elizabeth Edgar uses it in her translation of Goodnight Moon, which overall has a lot of ASL features as well (eg classifiers, grammatical body shifting, etc).

My Deaf fiance found me when I (hearing) barely knew my ABCs. Now we are going to Deaf events together and have no problems communicating. He cried the other day and told me how lucky he was that he found someone who was willing to learn. Hearing people, if you are going to date someone, put in the effort. It would be boring AF if you had to write stuff down for you and your partner to communicate.

I've lived in Rochester my entire life and just got accepted into the NTID interpreting program as well! From my understanding, the majority reason is for immersion/streamlining purposes. NTID has a different focus, so it has its own college, but its also very much designed to give as much of a "Deaf world" as possible. I think the separation was accidentally isolating and had the effect of "othering" Deaf people. It's like how people in the queer community will accidentally other themselves by trying to be hyper specific with their inclusivity. As for the merch, the only thing I can think of is NTID is much more famous than the others due to it's Deaf large population/focus and prestigious interpreting education

What I like about this perspective is that it is inclusive, while avoiding attempting to deny the individual who relates well to Deaf culture. I'm mostly able, and I didn't start working in accessibility until maybe a decade ago, and didn't have a lot of disabled people in my circles, at least not long-term. I immediately understood the need to have people-first solutions through the work I was doing, but it honestly took me a few years to understand Deaf culture as an outsider. I was blessed with a deaf coworker a few years after working in accessibility, then my daughter learned ASL in college, and I'm starting to widen my circles to appreciate all of the different perspectives, and I appreciate whenever someone shares their story and perspective with me.

I'm a retired ESL teacher of adults. I'm now living in an assisted living place where there is one deaf person. I'm studying ASL through RU-vid and some books I got. Back when I taught English, of course I taught "correct" grammar and syntax, but I also taught "incorrect" stuff: "I'm gonna," "I wanna," "I've got," "Whatcha doin'?" "ain't," etc. because THAT'S HOW MANY IF NOT MOST ENGLISH SPEAKERS TALK! Since the rules of grammar, syntax and other features of other languages have always interested me, and I want to speak as correctly as I can, I want to learn ASL grammar, but just like in spoken English (or any other language, COMMUNICATION IS MOST IMPORTANT. Thank you for your explanation.

I live in Houston TX and I know friends I used to have and lived here since teenhood who sign for the word "pretend" that is very different from all of them. I still sign that too. It is how you sign this way: place (left hand) one sign behind the palm of hand (right hand and in front of behind one sign) and the palm hand moves from right to left behind onto one sign. That's pretend sign and how you sign that way.

Thank you for sharing your opinion and telling us about this. I always have a concern about pure ASL and must perfect ASL grammar like English grammar, which is also part of my weakness. I always make several mistakes that plummet my score grade in ASL, and I feel discouraged to practice because I feel overwhelmed by the pressures of grammar.

I was a student there for a year and left for good reason. I totally agree with you about the seperation between those two. RIT on one side and NTID on the other. I felt it was entirely not what's the word. The separation was very much in evidence still to this day. You have to remember in 1960s there was a need to have a technical college for the deaf because of Galluadet University is a liberal art college. Quite diffetent for them. RIT is a technical campus of 9 colleges. One thing no one notice that in 1960s it was a time of rebellious and discrimination and the ending of segregation at the time. They in my humble opinion that RIT did not really want the deaf college so they would say "Ok we are right here you go over there" akin to the bus and schools and the seating at diners and more saying you are ___so you go over there. Not here. Well same thing. I know one thing that RIT finally did correct one thing: addition of another NTID building by adding to the main campus. Sort of behind next to the library because I lived at Riverknoll townhouse at the time in late 1980s. I left because of the Dean at RIT turned down my application to take industrial design. I was already 22 with community college credits. The rejection automatically places you to NTID. Not RIT so i was upset and let thr money that paid for paid for and then left. I wanted that field at RIT so I can take core courses in Industrial design before taking transportation design (automotive design). Well I got accepted at a college where they hs e that field and it was easy! That other college in another stats was shocked that I am deaf and so good at what I like. The deaf at NTID and RIT are actually two cliches. The RIT Deafies tend to ignore NTIF Deafies and of course both of them ignored me. I only had 2 friends. All others were treating me terrible. Bullied.

@RoganShannon13
@RoganShannon13 4 месяца назад
There are a couple, but none that I use personally because they’re very binary, and I would rather spell it out until there’s a sign that’s more inclusive of people outside of the man/woman binary.
@RoganShannon13
@RoganShannon13 4 месяца назад
@@crustmuskandpixiedust yeah I get that, but signing man woman equal doesn’t really get the same message across as fingerspelling gender. When you fingerspell it, it’s more inclusive of trans and nonbinary people.

Yes! I'm an interpreter, and not long after I moved to a house near a JW temple, I had someone from there knock on my door and ask if I knew anyone who used sign language. I said, "huh?" He didn't say anything so I hesitantly said, "...yes...?" Then he went into his script about how they had made a DVD with someone signing the Bible and wanted to know if I would pass it out to people. I told him no because I don't agree with their religion, etc and he went away and took his DVD with him. I lived there 10 years and he never came back, but I've always thought how creepy that he had to know somehow that I was an interpreter. 😳 But HOW!?
