This is a prime example of what the BBC has lost. Denied sufficient resources they can't pay for an entertainer to be interviewed on a news programme on a Sunday morning anymore and if they did certainly couldn't pay for him to play entirely live for a couple of minutes over the credits. And we're all the losers because few other networks are going to want to do it.
Whenever I hear this, I remember that my father still learned to plough straight lines with one horse. This would be the immediate postwar years. His favourite horse was blind, and he told me more than once how amazed he had been by the trust the horse had put into him, following his lead without the slightest hint of hestitation. A fine rendition by a very young Kate Rusby. No frills, just following the flow of the story. Lovely!
I first hear David Gilmour do this and yes tears it is one of the most honest and beautiful songs you can ever wish to hear and this is an exquisite version.
The economy of the story is brilliant. "I came to town in the Summer of Love, they were burning babies, burning flags . . ." If you want to know how to write a song or story, listen to this.
Possibly still has. Who knows what she still gets up to while washing the dishes or whatever..... She is only 79 and at 75 Richard Thompson still has a solid singing voice.
I could not love this more. exemplary. Thank you. Im an on and off actor and playing an englishman falling in love with a scotswoman at the moment. Desperately trying to get this song in to the soundtrack. Nothing greater than when poetry meets stave. Thank you for the contemplation and tears sir. M Goode.
While on a hard earned vacation (up in the winding hills of Asheville, North Carolina) from a miserable, brutal maual labor job, in the Spring of 2018, this particular version of this particular song helped inspire me to ask Shari (who is now my wife) to become my very own, real life version of LINDA Thompson.... 6 years later, I do not regret that decision!!!
