Roy Hodgson just didn't have many options, the only decent players he had available were Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole. They were past their best and still Lampard wasn't in the squad. He was a crap manager but the fact that he didn't have a very good squad didn't help that either. Gareth Southgate sort of knows what he is talking about, he knew that he had fewer top level players available as England manager and likely made sure to pick the right ones for the squad.
I'm not convinced Southgate is better than Capello or Ericsson - but listening to this he is clearly an intelligent guy who understands the grass roots of English football and realized what needed to be changed

Funny how everything comes around, and what happened then has happened now in 2024 Except Southgate is at the helm. Hopefully we improve in this tournament I really hope we do.
I always wonder why we never made a move for him, would have been an ideal succsessor to Van Nistelrooy, in reality we still really have not found a successor to Van Nistelrooy
The Scottish could learn from that. All they have to say at every tournament is aren't we good at singing. At least the Irish have had a go in the past.
Roy talking about England like he was some captain fantastic player for Ireland. Funny he didn't mention about himself walking out of his nation when we needed him, before a major tournament started.
Embarrassing yes but Ireland aren't even a strong footballing nation as England. It's not our number 1 sport. England have had high expectations on their backs yet they have underperformed most of the time.
You're surely not comparing Ireland to England in terms of football? England has a huge world acclaimed league, invest hundreds of millions in football and a huge catchment population. Ireland has around five million people and rugby is by far the most popular sport. Ireland qualifying for and being competitive in past world cups and European championships was really the pinnacle of expectations for Ireland. It's not Roy Keane who is saying England have all the best players and are going to win the euros with ease
@seanq5223 so Keane can just bitch about England without any comeback? The population thing is so pathetic - you don't hear English people playing the population card when they lose at cricket to India - a country with 26 times as many people as England. Is there no Rugby played in England? If the Irish Love Rugby so much, then how come they've only won four grand slams and lost more games than they've won.
haha 12 years later and nothing has changed, days before the 2024 tournament and I just know England are gonna be shite. They'll sail thru the group and get beat by a superior team. Always the way.
Berti's record was a lot better than certain managers who came after him who got free passes from the press....the disrespect this World Cup medal winner was subjected to was an absolute disgrace.
His friendly results were awful, but in qualifiers his Scotland team finished runners up in their Euro 2004 group. Since France 98, only Berti Vogts and Steve Clarke have succeeded in finishing 2nd in a qualifying group as Scotland manager. If modern rules applied then, Berti and his team would've qualified for Euro 2004
