I never understand why people claim forged wheels don’t crack . They are so strong that’s they don’t bend and they’ll crack . . Cast wheels sometimes are stronger depending on the manufacturing . The strongest wheels are billet . I had many forged wheels from hre , to works wheels and bbs . Japanese forged wheels are the strongest . European are the most over rated POs . The American wheels are better than the European . Most American 3 piece will have a spun barrel . Most jdm 3 piece are forged and the euro are flow form barrel but so call forge like BBS
Great video with measurements to support the already clear and concise explanation. Thank you!! As a result of watching your video (I had already watched many others which did not help), I have decided to have the existing front window tints removed (the tinting shop estimated that they are about 20%) and replaced with 50% ceramic (they were on my car when I bought it 2 years ago).
Flowforming is interesting- the way the barrel forming rollers draw out the material changes the grain structure making it stronger despite it starting off as a casting.
I wonder how difficult it would be to make a custom after market detachable screen for the small little side window on each side of the Smart Cap. Maybe a fine mesh with either velcro or magnets to hold it in place when the little window is open, but perhaps detachable so when you want to close the little window on either side you can just remove it, and maybe store it inside the Smart Cap by the window somewhere for easy access from the side or inside, or just roll them up and put them in the glove box or center console storage bin when not needed? It's a small thing but a screen on those little side windows would be important to me, and if RSI won't offer it direct, included or as an option, I'd like to make one or have one made after market. Awesome cap though, and frankly the extra weight I suspect would help with improved traction in the snow. And its extra sturdiness would make that cap top a much more usable space for racks and heavier things I suspect.
Is electrically powered variable tint legal? Theoretically it will be 75% or completely clear when measured with a meter, and then adjusted to whatever you want for your eyes to be comfortable from uv and glare when travelling...
So in fact, only the cast wheels have a fair name. What we call forged has nothing to do with forging but rather drilling. They take a block of metal and drill holes in it to make a rim. What we call flow-formed (forged) has more to do with forging than the forged wheels. Flow-formed wheels go through heating and forming, which is typical for forging. Such a mess in terminology.
Forged wheels are actually forged from a solid block of metal that is heated to a high enough temperature to make the metal soft and then compressed under the force of a high pressure hydraulic press to form the basic shape. The wheels are then CNC machined to the exact dimensions desired. I have a set of forged magnesium wheels being made for my car and this is the process being used, with a 20,000 ton hydraulic press doing the pressing. My wheels will weigh about half as much as they would have for a set of cast aluminum wheels of the same size.
so basically even if you put the 70% on the front windows, bringing total light transference to 62, you would not be able to resell your vehicle in the future. so unless you're driving it till it's scrap, why bother? wouldn't you just have to remove it all to sell it?
This looks like a very nice product. I wonder, can you get one of these for the 2023 or 2024 Ford F150 Raptor? Platinum? And those little side windows, can those come with bug screens? How about bug screens for the larger side or rear openings? And lastly, maybe a longshot, but I'm a tall guy, 6'2"+. I wonder, if I wanted to open the rear window of this RSI Smart Cap and open the pick up tailgate, is there any kind of a tent type enclose so that I could sleep in the back on the bed but have the enclosure protect me from rain while sleeping partly out on the tailgate? If it's not raining, no issue, just sleep with my head and shoulders out in the open air, but I wonder about rain or morning dew/dampness and Imagine if there was some kind of attachment for an extended tent added to the back of the cap.
ya but a forged wheel is still made from a blank. How is the blank made? You have to melt the metal to make it either way. So, I'm guessing that the forged wheel blank could have air trapped in it.
The company that's building my forged magnesium wheels uses a 20,000 ton hydraulic press to form the basic wheel shape before machining. This removes imperfections in the metal and aligns the grain boundaries in a manner that increases tensile strength.
