(no pun intended) I'm not sure how accurate this map is entirely is because I'm not seeing any green dots marking where I know active oil pumps are in the Baldwin Hills that I bike past. I live in Culver City btw! EDIT: OH NEVERMIND! I looked up the map myself and had to zoom all the way in to reveal all the green dots hidden underneith all the old grey dots. Hope that wasn't a deliberate choice of the government site devs to prioritize showing the old plugged holes over the relevant active ones. At least it effectively minimized my first impression of the situation.

❤ you did a great job on this piece I remember growing up in the '50s in Long Beach and seeing what we called oil Island as at this time there wasn't the trees and green shrubs in that area. I went back in the '70s and was shocked what it looked like it was looking nice . Good job on this anybody in the oil industry should watch this as part of classes in college
I did not know this! I grew up in Baldwin Hills in Los Angeles, so I have been very familiar with the oil wells. I graduated from St. Bernadette's Catholic School where we 8th graders (at the time) had to do research on the history of the area for the Monsignor. We found out fascinating things about the Mexican dons, like Don Tomaso and Don Miguel, who just two of the men who were part of a poker game. The streets named "Don" were named after the poker players. I even worked at the Municipal Library at City Hall many, many years ago. I read so much about the oil wells, but knew nothing about the information this video revealed to me! WoW!! I also lived on San Vicente and Genesee, down the street from that building. It was always an intriguing building and also right down the street from the hospital. None of us had any idea what that building was. We asked around, even asked a hospital guard, but no one knew anything about it. I even looked for an entryway to it, but never found one. This video was an eye-opener that I am sharing with my L.A. folks! I moved out of there years ago, but will always LOVE L.A.
Hey americans You should give yourself a pat on the back. Because of you guys we british are now fully wind energy dependant. 63% of our electricity comes from wind turbines, whixh is unlimited energy for us for free, because we have most our turbines off the coast and use tidal energy to power them the rst of the 7% comes from solar power and water such as damns. 30% of our electricity comes from our nuclear plants. And dirty fossil fuels. You ahould learn from the uk Unfortunatly we had a conservative government who put unrestricted earnings and removed enercy caps from electricity providers letting the. Regulate themselves and pht a load of laws stopping any future goverbmebt capping the costs so rhey are abusong that raising our bills. The energy compa ys have admitted green energy costs them less to produce and that they are making a fortune fmthanks to a coreupt right wing government and theres nothign the new government can do yet. But once we recerse the damage the conservatives have done we will have super low energy bills and thT terrifies the energy companies. We could have mkre green energy as we produce enough windoower alone to provide enerfy for the whole cpuntry 364 days a year But our energy grid cannot take it at the moment as its too old and knackered so they will jave to upgrade the enerfy grid to take it. Everywhere i go we have electric car charging points and come as sfandard on new house builds. Its great

Back in 1991, I use to live around the corner from the first building in the slide. That’s on Pico and Genesee in West LA. I never saw anyone go in or out of that building.

Just think of all the hoysing tracks built on top of the old oil wells. I learned about this little secret when I worked for the conservation corp and the engineers were telling me make sure to look up the housing track on the maps to see which homes were built over old oil wells. The oil wells are sealed off but if a big earthquake hits and that seal is broken. You're going to be in trouble. The oil could cause a fire. 🤷🏾♀️
