Offshore kayak fishing for big fish from a tiny boat. I mainly try to catch live Opelu out on the water and use them to tempt yellowfin tuna, wahoo, mahimahi, and any other pelagic that cruises by because EVERYTHING eats Opelu. Always good times with friends out on the water, and sometimes good eats when everything goes right and we get some fish in the bag.
Bro. Talk about DOZER opelu. Wow! Are you still seeing those in 2024? Man, I would rather eat those big boys than any billfish. | This looked a fun day.
Yeah mainly the wind blowing offshore! Can be hard to paddle back to land against that so gotta really watch it. The mahis are the best battered fried fish for sure!
@AffordableWahoo .. I hate peddling against the wind lol .. we double battered (flower..egg..panko) and fried some up a couple weeks ago and it was delicious
Its called a "kage" spear gaff. We all make our own. The handle is a wooden dowel with a hole drilled in it and the spearpoint is a 3/8 inch stainless steel threaded rod that's epoxied into the hole. I think I saw one on Amazon too though not sure how good it is.
Thanks for watching 🤙 It does often get choppy here in Hawaii so that's a major reason. For me it mainly helps when I need to move a heavy fish from my deck to the fish bag. Shifting heavy weight around while rocking from swells can get sketchy. I lose maybe a quarter MPH off top speed with them on.
Shit that WAS your kage! I saw something bobbing in the background and was like No Can Be. Glad you spotted it in time, looks like you needed it that day.
Thanks! Ulua do really heavy slow runs. Slow compared to shibi anyway. They also tend to dive straight for the bottom and you don't get the same fast sleigh ride that pelagics give.
You were smart to not keep trying to use it. I kept using mine and got really lucky that I didn’t lose the fin haha. Damn that was a hard work day right there!!
lol yeah I would have take off the fin before using cuz was dangling by just that flimsy little cotter pin, but not even worth it can paddle faster by hand 😂
I actually got my Revo 13 used for $1200. It's a 2015 model and had seen lots of use by the time I got it in 2021 but the hull was still in good shape. Used Ocean Kayaks like Prowler 13/15 and Trident 13/15 are solid options if you want to paddle.
Brah, it ain't easy to rip assist hooks off and bend a jig like that so you know had to be something serious that ate the initial fish you were fighting.
Thanks! I almost always just let them start running on liveline mode before I set the hook even with wire stinger. Sometimes it'll let the ono swallow and cut the wire though so it's got risk
Hate to lose the investment of money, time and effort of building rigs but, as you know, paying the Tax Man is part of the cost of doing business with the ocean. Le Tigre hadn't even woken up yet, by the time it reached your boat. SCCAAARRRRYYYYY!!!!!!
Nice video. I has heading out from Hilo harbor a few weeks ago and my steering broke as I passed under the bridge. Loading and unloading sucks, but really sucks when you get no fishing in. Kudos to you for still getting out and catching fish. Never tried West side. Would like to hit it sometime. Such better conditions and deeper water.
Thanks! That sucks about your steering and yeah that's a major bummer to put in all the work just to turn right around. West side had nicer water but man you can tell it gets fished a lot more too!
That half gindai just enough for one serving sinigang (Filipino tamarind soup). I, too, would be all over that. Haha! Two year old video still awesome, Bro.
