Tips, tricks, trials, and successes as I sew along. Projector patterns is my newest thing to conquer as I seek to create my own custom fitted wardrobe...or at least mostly. Quilting is another of my passions and I’m obsessed with all my Juki machines!
I bought a projector, but haven't taken it out of the box yet because I'm watching your videos to learn how to use it. You very briefly mentioned that using Adobe Illustrator was an option instead of Infinity Designer. I already have a paid subscription for Adobe Illus, and I already know my way around that program, so I'd like to use it instead of Infinity. My question is, can a watch your "how to use Infinity" video to learn how and what I need, or can, do to PDF patterns files, for using them with projectors, then apply those same principles but work in Illustrator instead? ie: Can I stitch pages together in illustrator or should I use PDF stitcher first? Can I change line type, size and color? Can I make alterations to the pattern to lengthen a hem, grade between sizes, or do a FBA, all with illustrator? I appreciate your help. Thanks.
I would recommend using Project & Cut or Pattern Projector for calibrating and projecting but… Yes, you can absolutely use Illustrator instead of Affinity Designer for adjusting patterns, and the steps are largely the same!
Wow the new project and cut software makes this process so easy. Thank you for the video, I was going to try the manual calibration but I think I may just stick with project and cut haha
I am kinda sad new people to projectors won’t know how wonderful the new software is unless that try “the old way” 😂 It’s absolutely amazing software, isn’t it?!
I have just bought the program for Ipad, Will be very Happy to show how it is used for patterns and projektor, i sometimes use Ellie and Mac patterns. Thanks for the good teaching
None of my videos cover iPad, unfortunately. Some stuff transfers but not all of it. I think Sheredith with Projector Sewing has some iPad specific videos on RU-vid.
I am trying to use the stitcher with a Tailor Nova custom pattern but it doesn't stitch the patterns when i open the PDF. Don't know what i am doing wrong.
Have you worked through the steps in this video? It’s hard to answer in RU-vid comments but you can post in the Projectors foe Sewing Facebook group with pictures for better answers!
Thank you for posting this video. I’m the one who has been using ditto successfully for several months, and I did/do like certain aspects of it. BUT they have now changed their pricing structure according to how many patterns you want to buy or how many BYOP patterns you want to upload. And there is NO annual subscription available. Which is what I got. Now I’m having trouble getting patterns to upload. They did allow 5 at a time in there and you just switched patterns out so you could load others in. And I’m not sure why it is acting funny- customer service is now handled by Joann’s and they don’t know about ditto. So today my new (to me) Epson ultra short throw projector just arrived. Now I’m digging for info. My husband had already set my computer up for a monitor so the projector played nicely with the computer the minute we turned it on. I’m getting a stand for it and need to learn calibration. I have been using PDF Stitcher and Affinity Designer all along, so I think it’s going to be ok. I’m looking forward to a bigger projection area and scrolling instead of splicing! Your videos have helped me a lot all along since even opening up the ditto, and for sure will now with a normal projector:) Thank you.
You need a vector program to trace the physical pattern and make it a digital one. Then you can project it just like any other digital pattern with one of these!
@@DaileySewsStuff so if I use adobe illustrator I would have it open on my projector in my cutting mat and trace it out? How would I know the scale? Would I have to manually calibrate the projector
@@33ttpat10 that’s one way, for sure! Yes, manually calibrate your projector and trace in a vector program. Or you can use a photograph with a scale and do it that way.
I’m saving this video. Yesterday I went to eBay and bought an Epson Brightlink 595wi, (ultra short throw) that I saw someone using on a video. I have been successfully using my Ditto but now they have changed their pricing and I haven’t been able to upload since Sunday. I wrote support that is now being handled by Joann…. And I’m very skeptical. With the new apps/software for calibration, I think I can do this! You and Sheridith and the FB group have gotten me to this point. Using the ditto and learning how to prep files with PDF Stitcher and Affinity Designer have helped me understand the process, and now calibration (the one important thing Ditto does wonderfully) is the last hurdle. The projector is supposed to arrive in two days, and you may hear from me…..
While I have a Mac, I do everything from my iPad Pro. I started on this journey due to wanting to design clothing in bed at night. That lead me down a rabbit hole that ended with projectors. I purchased an Epson ultras short throw and calibrated on the pattern projector. It has everything I’ll need and some more due to the portability of my iPad Pro..
So glad it helped! But things have gotten so much easier since this! Don’t forget to use one of the new calibration programs to make the last few steps easier than ever!
Hi, how do you use PDF Stitcher to change a pdf Letter pattern into a printing size equivalent or about the same as a A0 size to send to a printing company that prints it for you similar to how patterns come in a physical envelope?
I don’t think I addressed this much in this video, since I was focusing on the new features, but I do have a previous video that shows that function. Basically, you use the middle tab called “Tile” to input the information for it to put your puzzle together!
That’s one option! Mini projectors can go on the ceiling or on something portable like a tripod. Ultra Short Throws can sit on the surface you’re cutting on. Short throws can be ceiling or wall mounted. Lots of options!
What you say as per cos may be true for the USA but here in Australia a used ust is around $400, a new one is upwards of $1000, the Amazon ones, under $200, mounts= about $15 from shein and the like. That's a massive gap. Something to be concidered
Yeah. It’s called Ditto. It’s not quite that much anymore but it’s still *not* the best option for projecting patterns, IMO. I’ve done a couple videos over the differences and, spoiler alert, the DIY way is much better!
I’m just starting this adventure of projector sewing. I’m still waiting on my mount before I can get started. Thank you for helping clarify some things. Have a great day.
I am thrilled to announce the launch of my new small group classes! These classes will be a max of 5 students at a time, will be 6 weeks of weekly live classes, cost $150, and will focus on learning to use PDF Stitcher and Affinity Designer to get your sewing patterns ready to project onto your fabric. If you are at all interested, go to this Google Form to find out more information and help me know a bit more about the people who are interested: bit.ly/DSSGoogleForm (if you can’t use bit.ly, this is the actual link forms.gle/XkLFsxJbSDaqSVTP8 ) I can’t wait to see you there!
Hallo from germany. Thanks for all the info! Just yesterday found FB page projector sewists by accident and got so exited that today I ordered my first projector. After that I looked for the programms to use . So I luckily found your video , just perfect. Now I hope that I can manage it. Thanks a lot.
Thank you for a great comparison. I have used Pattern Projector and am really impressed with the ease of use. I will try Project and Cut next week when on holidays. Thanks again from Australia.
Great overview of both and very exciting to be able to try these as a new to projector sewist. Quick question - is there a recommended cutting mat size for calibrating? I have large 34 x 46 inch and smaller 22x 34 inch. I was finding it difficult to calibrate on the large mat - (using pattern projector from my laptop next to the projector). Will be trying Project and Cut today. Thankyou so much for the wisdom and knowledge you share on this channel.
I will always recommend calibrating to at least a 16x24” box and the bigger your box, the better your accuracy. That said, your smaller mat is definitely big enough to calibrate to!
@@DaileySewsStuff thankyou... I ended up going for 41 x 25 inch on the bigger mat. I'm so thrilled with the support offered and how I am now able to quickly check calibration, open the file and turn off the sizes/layers not needed and be ready to cut. Moving the image, flip and rotate is also brilliant. Very excited by this. I used Project and Cut for today's project, PE Urban pants and Lounge Dress (projector files). We are rural and rely on mobile internet...so this works well. Thankyou again for all the wonderful information provided.
I’ve been using the project & cut app and like it very much. But then in the FB group I read that Pattern Projector gives capability to do pattern alterations with an iPad (and I did watch this video but that fact went right over my head at the time!) … so now I want to try it. It’s hard for me to draw lines between pattern sizes using a mouse, so I think I might be the person who goes back and forth between these two programs. Gotta try Pattern Projector, but it has to wait till I get my projecting/cutting table back for my use (long story). Thank you so much for this video. I saved it for future reference. Also, I’ll look in your videos for digital pattern modification know-how.
Great comparison of the two programs. I haven’t tried either but will now go ahead and give them both a try and thank you for taking the time to help. Thanks also for the designers for developing such great software solutions. X
Check out the description box for an edit. The wonderful thing about these new programs is that the designers are listening to what we want and need and quickly updating the programs. The downside of that is videos are out of date by the time they are posted. 🤦♀️ Courtney contacted me today to say she has already updated Pattern Projector to work offline and to save your calibration within the same browser! It just hammers home my main point-try both programs and see which you prefer!
Thank you for the review! Pattern Projector is a Progressive Web App that can be installed and used offline. Also, it saves your calibration locally to your device so you shouldn't need to recalibrate on the same device/browser :)
Thank you, I had asked this very question in Projectors for Sewing the other day (having also watched both interviews etc etc). This was very helpful! Thank you!
When k recorded it, that’s the pattern I was working on. That’s how I usually make these videos-with real life things I’m working on so the information you get is based on how things are actually used. The pattern ended up taking much longer than I expected or is usual for a pattern on testing to be released so I had to blur most of it. I actually waited a few extra days in editing, hoping it would be released so I didn’t have to blur it. I left the straight line at the top so you could see it was a straight line. But, honestly, the image of the pattern at the end isn’t really necessary to understand the software. Yes, a properly calibrated pattern is the point of any calibration, but the point is how quickly and easily this calibrates, not that it is calibrated. I also showed that with calibration grid being projected.
I noticed that with the last example with the ellie and Mac pattern you did trim instead of overlap but under the layout diagram it says that the pages are trimless. Does that effect the way the pattern looks when you stitch it together?
Not really. I usually trim because if you overlap, you get two lines right on top of each other (but not always *perfectly* on top of each other) but you could choose overlap instead. I haven’t come across any patterns where it mattered if you chose trim vs overlap, but the options is there if you do come across it.
Clever programme. I couldn't tell from the video which of the lines you lined up with the lines on your mat - the inside solid line, outside solid line, or dashed middle line, but I'm guessing the instructions on the programme show that clearly?
