I'm late to this party having just discovered Idles over the winter, but I am so intrigued and I just love this band. I'm 71 years old, too, but music has no age. Back in the 70's and 80's I was a radio DJ. Idles would have been on my turntables for sure! Love what Joe says about raising a son, too.

I am a guy who is opposite of the politics that this band preaches on their audience. I identify as one who opposes illegal immigration, and generally a right wing guy. But I love this band...I love Joe's powerful being, I give applause to the inclusion of marginalized communities..I highl five their ability to champion for those communities. Fk some of their ideologies on white privilege and such..and I'm allowed to stand shoulder.to shoulder.with what.these guys are about..and yet not be one of.them
Well, there is. It's not really about the masculinity (be the macho man you want to be for all I care), but it's about not recognising the privelege you have as a man, furthermore it's about believing you deserve more than the patriarchy already hands men. Or it can be about equating manlyness with someone's worth as a person (boils down to the same thing).But there certainly is such a thing as toxic masculinity, darling.
Class being shackles of people’s perception is actually an amazing way to explain peoples ignorance or willful ignorance toward social issues. Some people will never understand and aren’t willing to understand what others deal with on a daily basis. This is also like Joe said a lack of empathy. Something therapy could help but you need to be willing to learn, change, and grow as a person.
Joe seems to forget that "Dirty Dancing" was released in 1987. Joe was born in 1984 so that makes him 3 when it was released, what parent would approve of a 5 year old to watch Dirty Dancing. I know that "women empowerment" nowadays is related, maybe, to some toxic masculinity expressed above all by the paternalism of the ruling class and government back then. But I think it depends on the unique experiences and the point of views of every single person. Because all I seen during these thirty years on this earth and still now is just Toxic Femininity. If you give too much power to women, they quickly become unbearable.
The funniest thing about toxic masculity is that it's a concept that's not enforced by men or some patriarchy, but WOMEN. They are the ones who only want muscular confident chads and the second a guy shows any kind of weakness and emotion she dumps him instantly or loses respect for him. I have witnessed multiple cases of this happening among my friends so I'm not making this up.
