We recently moved to a 70-acre, uninhabited island in Southeast Alaska. Please subscribe and join us as we share our day-to-day experiences living this remote, off-grid lifestyle. We will try to upload at least one video every week, showing the struggles we face in this unique setting, along with the natural beauty and the wildlife encounters we experience.

The best possible controller for them is the midnight solar classic 250. It has the right algorithm and handles all temp and moisture and arc variations, and puts out 63A

Have you ever tried a Victron BlueSolar mppt? I bought 8 of them for my solar array project (1 per panel) it can be manually programmed via a USB dongle. Just wanted to know your thoughts. I looked at the Midnight solar classic 250, the specs look great, but their prices are quite high

Nice video. I have the 135hp version of the engine (non vtec). They are great engines. My couple of tips are 1: apply some dish soap to the new impeller to lube it up when first starting. Probably not required but it makes me feel better. I don’t like greasing them as the grease will go into the cooling system which seems daft to me. 2: I use a ratchet strap hooked to the engine cowling and looped under the prop to support the lower unit when refitting. It saves the back and it allows ample time to check the shafts are aligned before sending it home. To be fair you managed great in this video just with lifting it, but I often find they don’t want to slide in that easy, and being able to pause and leave it supported whist you wiggle is helpful. Good work.

Can you explain more on the pump? I looked at doing a rain collection here to supply a drip system, but I need so much pressure to make it work. I have a sump pump, but it pumps in bursts. I was curious as to what you had, if it was continuous, and if it was small enough to run on a small, localized solar power system.
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska 10 месяцев назад
We use a small 110 volt pressure pump, which is continuous and runs off of our inverted battery system. We tried a 12 volt pump on a separate, smaller solar panel, however, it did not have enough power to meet our needs.
@mreillydesign

I understand how to load a trailer when hauling things... but what kind of physics do you have to be aware of when loading a boat?
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska 10 месяцев назад
The tank was so large, we needed a lookout on the bow, along with a separate pilot boat to safely navigate our way home. The weight was centered, so we had no issues with steering.
@mreillydesign
@mreillydesign Год назад
So you obviously rely on solar for most things, and fuel for the machinery. What else do you use the fuel for?
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska 10 месяцев назад
We use #2 diesel for our generator and skid steer. We use #1 diesel (stove oil) for a couple heaters in our house, although our primary source of heat is a wood stove.
@mreillydesign
@mreillydesign Год назад
Do you need to oil the ropes to keep them in good shape?
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska 10 месяцев назад
No, but we do need to replace the rope every couple years. We use lead core rope to prevent it from floating so it doesn't get tangled in our outboard.
@mreillydesign
@mreillydesign Год назад
Can you do a more in depth video showing that rope loop trick?
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska

Iron Edison finally started selling these dry today (Jan/2023)..so you aren't paying to move a ton of water anymore. Your entire setup is about $2k now and ships with a dry powder that you mix and distribute to the cells on-site.

Why do greenhouses have to have fans?
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska
@off-gridislandlifeinalaska 2 года назад
On sunny days it gets very hot inside the greenhouse, even with the built-in ventilation. The fan helps keep it a little cooler in there. It also simulates an outdoor breeze to aid the plants in polination.
