I took my A. I. interisland from Hawaii Big Island to Maui to Lanai to Molokai. Just waited for very good weather windows before channel crossings. Took 7 months and had a great Hawaii adventure. Because of the furling sail, outriggers, 3 methods of propulsion, and hard plastic hull ... a very dependable adventure boat! This boat is not designed to be the fastest.

I am new to sailing a a hobie mirage sail boat. Lots of fun but I feel like I am always fighting the rudder - have to hold it with 2 hands. Anyone have ideas on how to make this easier? Am I doing something wrong or do I just need a longer handle with more torque?
@RodneyVanderKley
@RodneyVanderKley Год назад
Your rudder is probably not all the way down. You need to be able to secure the rudder in its vertical position deep into the water. If it comes up at all towards the horizontal (even a little bit) the Hobie will be virtually impossible to steer. In the cocpit there are two handles with string attached that goes through the hull to the rudder. "UP" and "DOWN". You will need to pull the "DOWN" as hard as you can and lock it off in the cleat - that will hold the rudder down with tension.

Really enjoyed that considering getting one myself. Just one thing, when you go over. How or is it possible to self right the yak. I imagine it very difficult with the outriggers and sail
@RodneyVanderKley
@RodneyVanderKley 2 года назад
The easiest way to right them is to fold the outside outrigger in against the kayak and then just stand on the other one. Comes over pretty easy. The sail can also be furled in while it's underwater if needed. However, even though we did tip 'em, we sort of did it on purpose for fun. They are very stable and won't usually tip over under normal sailing conditions.

I'm surprised to see this $6000+ boat tip over. I put outriggers on my Klepper Kamerad ts and it never came close to tipping. My home made outriggers also never came close to submarining. There are four problems that I have spotted on the Hobie that I didn't have with the Klepper: Item 1: There is too much sail for the outrigger size. Item 2: Hobie relies on a single sail. The Klepper had a main sail and a jib sail. Item 3: The main sail seems to be tied to the rear of the boat. The Klepper main sail allowed you to hold the main sail on a rope and allows you to release the sail as you need to spill air out of the sail. Item 4: The frame of the Klepper kayak held the front of the outriggers slightly higher than the rear. This lessens the probability that the outriggers will submarine, wind load or no wind load. I used two two by fours sandwiched to the upper deck by two by twos and 4 inch PVC pipes as the outriggers themselves. The outriggers were each four feet out from the center of my boat, and did not touch the water while my weight was centered in the boat.
@RodneyVanderKley
@RodneyVanderKley 2 года назад
Hey Tony, the Hobie is a very capable sailboat. To clarify, the Hobie sail is not fixed at the rear of the boat but contolled via a pully system to the cockpit to allow reefing the sail tight or allowing it to open if needed. The sail can also be furled in or out via a clever pully system which can reduce the sail area in heavy wind or increase it in light wind. In the video we were sailing in gale force winds, at the tail end of a cyclone that had just passed through, with sails completely unfurled and reefed tight just to push the boat to the limit to see if we could tip 'em over - just for fun.

Oh good. I'm working on getting a new TI for me and my son... And I thought the TIs were immune to rolling. Is there a proper sailing course that's specific to Hobie TI's or is any sailing course ok? I really don't want to flip it I plan on having a ton of fishing gear I don't want to have to replace.
@tonycalitri8310
@tonycalitri8310 2 года назад
@@RodneyVanderKley I just watched this video: "Hobie TI Sail Repairs Everglades Challenge 2020". Even more than the bolt snapping off, I was surprised to see that the mount for the main mast deteriorated. The Klepper main mast was secured to each side of the boat by nylon ropes. This eliminates the need for the mast to flex. While I've never been in winds as strong as the ones you were in, I still think that the Klepper has a superior design. Now that my boat is pushing 50 years old, I will reinforce all stress points with aluminum plate before I use the sail and build new outriggers again.

your chasing for speed to much and so you flip. when you get going like that the pontoon is under water you need to keep a hand on the line so you can release it to avoid capsizing. that seat is also a bad idea it may get your ass out of the water but now your ballast you is higher and isnt doing its job as well as it should

Also loosening the mainsheet quickly would help when those tramps start to become windage, offsetting the capsize sequence by de-powering the sail.

@RodneyVanderKley
@RodneyVanderKley 4 года назад
The earlier model is the one you can see capsizing. Post 2015 models are more stable an harder to capsize but still can do it. We found that the tramps caught a lot of wind and helped to flip them. The week that we took the videos was just at the end of a tropical cyclone that was coming down the coast. Probably 50-60k winds. We did push 'em pretty hard to see what it would take to flip them.

Rodney Van der Kley what a lovely video - I was hooked from the first bar of the tune and when the lyrics started, it brought a smile to my face. I am considering purchasing a tandem island but concerned about the capsizing and more importantly the righting of the boat if single handed. Our waters on Lough Erne, Co. Fermanagh are colder than yours I suspect! However, I think the TI would be more stable than our Laser 2000 which my wife races (I’m rarely allowed on that, hence I want my own ‘family picnic’ boat! Thanks again for posting a lovely video.

@@Fernside5 I bought my TI new nearly four years ago. I take care to wash down after each sail and have had no serious problem. I try to get out once a week, even take the dogs out on the trampolines. I have the Hobie trailer and keep the entire rig under cover(tarp). I would not recommend going out in winds above 25 knots. Although if you furl early you will prevent any chance of an expensive mast break. Submarining the Ama is not recommended. Hobie has extensive spare parts and accessories. The mirage drives work well and the Vantage seats are very comfortable even on long trips. I sail in the warm waters of Western Australia all year round. I notice cold climate TI AI sailors use the Dry suits. I only need a spray top, shorts and a wrap around hat.
