I explain horse education like human education. The present two in my care found me 5 years ago aged 6 & 7. Regardless of what education they had received previously I realised very quickly after one of them buried me in the school that I had to start with kindergarten. I consider them to have progressed through infant and primary school. They are currently in secondary school and doing their A levels. Interestingly we have all progressed at the same speed and the three of us teach each other. Every time we interact we learn something positive from each other. I am deeply indebted to my horses for my health and happiness and their health and happiness is my sole motivation to persevere. In turn I thank God because without Him I wouldn't have them 🙏
Brilliant - this makes so much sense. The problem we (as conventionally brought-up horse people) is that we have been indoctrinated into the ‘show him who is boss’ mindset. Such simplicity is like a breath of fresh air.
Oh how I wish I knew this sooner! But SO SO THANKFUL for you sharing this with us! It's so wonderful to learn and hopefully from this point thanks to you! ❤
But the R+ people say your horse will hate you and not want to work with you if you don't treat your horse. Weird how I can get a better connection and relationship without it then.
I had to laugh. Doing 'the Obi-wan thing' yeah, it's kinda part of the way 😂 I watched the video with the Barb Stallion first and the difference is awesome. I instantly saw it. On this one you even don't have to wave the flag to get his attention! I want to follow your footsteps: doing what's needed but with as less force as possible! Did some therapy recently for my ptsd. Watching you working with horses reminds me of the first person I learned to trust. A person who's kinda training me, the first one I really started to put my trust in, and there had been some before that man who tried it, but failed. In many ways I'm this horse. Put pressure on me, I'll fight. No pressure- I'm on the loose, anxiously searching for safety. Depressed and distracted, in discomfort, disconnected from the people around me, feeling extreme loneliness. But you showing trust in me, asking me to do something nicely... you'll have my attention. I will tend to follow you. Until I WANT to follow you. You will show me ways to built up my confidence and then I'll do it on my own. Thank you for this perspective! Looking this video is really making a difference for me: now I understand a bit more, why I act the way I do. And what I'll need in the future. By looking at you, working with that horse, you were helping me, someone who experienced narcissistic childhood neglect and trauma! I often cried hearing the song 'Wild horses'. The lyrics are saying "Wild horses I wanna be like you. Throwing caution to the wind, I run free, too. Wish I could recklessly love, like I'm longing to, I wanna run with the wild horses..." Felt a connection to these beautiful creatures of God from the beginning of my life, never quite getting it, what it was that connects me to them... until today. Who would have thought that you and they'll teach me how to evolve by watching a horses training video...? Thank you, Sir. You can't know how much you helped me. Life lesson learned. And more important: Now I'll have a way to describe it to others. Like therapists who have no clue. Thank you. For making me see myself through your eyes, looking at me, lovingly looking at myself as if I'm a horse. Giving me that opportunity. This will impact my life forever. I can't really begin to fathom in how many ways. For me, your one of the Best Trainers out there! I love the way you work with these animals and educate yourself and grow. Thank you for taking me with you. Reminding me that life's about trust, connection and not only reaching goals I want to, but to enjoy the journey.❤ I'm still kinda flashed from the awareness now.
How do you build trust in such a way that they would lay down with you? I like to think my relationship with my horse is good but I'm running out of ideas on how to grow that trust more
To me that's the reason why I like being around horses. They notice you, too. They're always aware that you're there. One of the reasons why I think they're so good for human therapy sessions for trauma survivors. The psychological needs to be heard, to be seen, to connect... horses do all those instinctively. And they don't care about shiny shoes, expensive clothing, if you're huge or tiny, thin or chubby, what colour your skin is etc. They care about you being authentic and in sync. They give you a sense of being acknowledged and respected as a natural being, part of nature. Something that was stolen from trauma victims. Horses can help you back to that state of physical and psychological awareness.
Horses show affection to one another by mouthing each other’s backs, faces. Mothers groom their colts that way and colts mouth their mothers. We like to pet them to show affection and that’s him petting you. Accepting their affection goes a long way towards developing a close relationship.
Looks like your boots need a trip to the cobbler for new soles! 😉. That way you'll get to keep your old, comfy boots and keep the dirt out! Just think of the cobbler as a ferrier for cowboys! 💕🌞🌵😷
Where do you put the outside rein when the horse decides to walk off? In my case, the big furball wants to walk backward. As far as I can tell, I'm not putting pressure on the reins. Do you tie the outside rein to the saddle horn? I am using long sit reins.
Peter, I have seen many of your podcasts and I don’t think you have ever been so personal, forthcoming and so vulnerable as you are in this interview! Thank you for your transparency, reflective of your personal commitment to alleviate the suffering of this earthly realm! Gene Johnson
I have a have horse that will bite me when I am riding but not when I am on the ground I don't know if its because she is anxious or just because off the reasons in this video even my instructor has no clue why she does it except that she is angry after I make her do something she doesn't want or because she is a anxious horse ? does you or anybody have advice?
