Just your average middle aged guy collecting vintage baseball cards and one-of-a-kind guitars. Looking forward to sharing my collections and experiences and hope you get a kick out of watching!
When I started collecting vintage baseball I did it by accepting cards in almost any condition because I just wanted to be able to own more cards. While I still stick to low grade cards I now at least look for nice eye appeal and centering is the most important component of that for me. Registration can make or break a card as well but centering is paramount. This is an extremely impressive collection and I can tell how much has gone into curating it, Pete! Don’t worry my dog makes an appearance by barking in the background of almost every one of my videos. Ha!
Hey it's never too late for a comment! I decided to keep the lower grade card, #1. It just wins on centering and color. And thanks this Satchel is one of the better mid-grade cards I've seen, in memory at least. Appreciate the feedback!
Hi Stephen, good to meet you! Thanks for watching. I just went and subbed to your channel and I have to say.... I cannot BELIEVE how nice your 48 Leaf Jackie is.... I just saw a little thumbnail of it and I knew it was going to be nice, but up closer it's stunning. Wow, the color, registration, and centering is off the charts. I have a PSA 3 but I actually might like your SGC 2.5 better. I know you have other beautiful cards, but that one is a knockout. Anyway thanks for the comment I appreciate it!
I don't really mind them. What I don't like is having my collection all mixed and matched. I just want all of my lifetime keeper cards in the same holders. Don't ask, I'm a little OCD. Thanks for the comment!
@@50-Fifty-VintageI don’t like the new PSA holders for the same reason I don’t like BVG. Too much plastic between me and the card. I’ll actually pay more for a card in the old holder. I don’t mind having a mixture of SGC and PSA. The main thing is the card, I do own some in the new PSA holders. I really like your ‘62 Mantle, that one is your crown jewel.
Thanks I really appreciate. Yeah, I definitely scored big at the National. I was just looking at those Seavers again, and they really do look great side by side. The Mays Stand Up is a big one since I've been looking for one for a while now. Now I just have to get an Aaron, Mantle, and Clemente (among others) but finding them well centered is harder than I expected. Thanks for the comment!
Aren't they? I had a blast hanging out with them, and so happy I hooked his dad up with one of his grail cards. Ash is one of the first sellers I ever bought from when returning to the hobby. Believe it or not it was a modern Ichiro rookie. But he's always been super super helpful whenever I've been looking for something. Thanks for the comment!
Sorry for the late reply -- I wound up agreeing with you and deciding to keep #1. Now I just need to put the other up on Ebay. Thanks for the feedback -- totally appreciate the comment!
I really enjoyed this video. You collect in a way similar to myself, where eye appeal is above all else. I especially loved that Sport Kings Ruth, such a great card and tremendous eye appeal on it.
Thanks! Yup, I'm ALL about the eye appeal. I buy the card -- the grade is what it is, but it's not super important to me. I usually aim for above a 2 just because I don't like creases, but once in a while you find a 2 that just blows the other 2s out of the water, and I think this Sport Kings Ruth qualifies. I'm going to sub to your channel now -- I appreciate the comment!
@@50-Fifty-Vintage I appreciate you subscribing to my channel! That Ruth you have there is a stunner regardless of the assigned grade. Definitely agree with you 100% about the importance of eye appeal.
Sorry I somehow missed replying to this! I thought #2 was better on centering at first too, but the 3.5 is so close, and has better color. I decided to go with that, but I really can't go wrong with either of them - I enjoyed the feedback either way. I might do another one of these "Which one should I keep" videos - this was helpful and fun. Appreciate the comment!
I like that '66 GOOD² for sale 🔥 The '54 Bowmz is def one of MY fave micks. Love that mint green box with sig only. Your Red Heart and Dan Dee are fantastic.
If you're interested in the 66 PSA 2, let me know. I have better pics I can send. And the 54B is one of my newer cards... maybe it needs to grow on me. I don't dislike it at all, it's just a little "quiet" for lack of a better term, but talk to me in a couple of months and I could be feeling differently. Thanks for the compliments on the Red Heart and Dan Dee. I was waiting for someone to call those out! lol They are two of my favorite cards period, and they were not cheap so nice to hear them get some recognition. Appreciate the comment!
@@50-Fifty-Vintage Def let the 54B grow on you ⏸️ You'll start to love that quiet subtlety. Mint green signature box, classic sig, no fonts/text, fantastic original portrait. Trust me. Yeah, definitely hit me with some pics of the 66. Could possibly find it's new home with me.
😆 The algorithm failed you! lol - Well, at least they're not chronological - and to be honest I'm just flattered you watched either of them. Thanks again for the compliments!
Ugh... all of those ancillary cards and all-star cards make my head spin! I'll get to them eventually, but for now I have limited room in my display cases, so I'm just focusing on the "core" cards. But thanks again - you gave me the idea of filming myself filling one of these cases. I just have to figure out a way to get better lighting out in this hallway! And thanks for commenting!
Thanks Adam (assuming that's your name)! I'm so psyched about this Paige, you have no idea. I've been dreaming of finding a copy this well centered with such nice color in a 4-6, and it's even better that I don't have to spend the extra money on a 5-6. 4 is the perfect grade IMO. Corners are just sharp enough, and if you find a really nice one, they can have the eye appeal of a higher grade, especially if you're a couple of feet away. So that's usually what I aim for. Such an iconic card. Anyway thanks again I really appreciate the comment!
Great cards, Pete. I like the '67 Topps Mantle, it has a strong image or design. I think it's one of his more under appreciated cards too imo. Oh yeah. That '64 Topps Mantle is fire too.
I'm a big fan of the 67 set in general -- but especially the Mantle and Clemente. As a kid I loved the 67 Mays and Steve Carlton. The Aaron grew on me. And yup - that 64 was one of the tougher cards to find out of all of his mid-career cards, and it's still not quite *perfect*. As of now I'm very satisfied with it! Thanks - love the comments!
Because when he was on... he was one of the best ever. I agree he's a bit overrated, but he was always the top of the pyramid when I started collecting, so I've always put him on a pedestal. He's also just lucky to be featured on some of the most gorgeous vintage cards ever made IMO. At the same time I understand where you're coming from entirely.
@@ReindeerStudios She gets enough attention trust me! I’m sure she’ll wind up making a cameo in a video though, she’s usually attached to my hip. Also you don’t realize how nice it is to finally meet another hallway displayer! You’re the first! It just makes sense with my home layout and I paid a lot for these cards so I wanna see them as much as possible. It helps justify all the money I spend on these suckers! Thanks again for the comment my man!
Cool mantle cards for sure honestly I would leave that 55 Bowman mantle in the old slab at a 6 in today's standards it would probably get a 5 or a 4.5 on a bad day
@@whitesoxtom2657 I’m not submitting for regrading, just a straight up slab update. As long as a slab isn’t cracked, they won’t regrade it, they’ll just give it a new slab with the same grade on it. So it will still be an SGC 6. If I thought it would get regraded I wouldn’t send it in. I think you’re right it might get a 5. Thanks you’re right on the money!
@@TheDadsAreHere Why thank you sir! I’m glad the dads are here… I fully welcome all the dad jokes you guys can throw at me! Seriously though thanks for the comment I appreciate it!
@@LonelyBasementBaseballCards I got inspired what can I say. There will probably be a break for a while before the next one but it was either now, or months from now on these Mantles, and if there’s one run to show off… it’s gotta be the Mantles. My Mays run is not far behind though. Thanks for the comment!
@@ACollectorsDream I’m not joking when I say I watched several of your Mantle Collection videos as inspiration before I made this. This collection is sweet but I aspire to have one half as nice as yours one day. Your 52 is just 🤯🤯🤯. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one as pack fresh. Glad you enjoyed - thanks again for the comment!!
Pete man we really collect so similar !! Love your eye for finding those forever copys. Your leftovers are most peoples forevers 😂😂😂. Stunning Paige and me and you are clubbys yet again 👊. Im so with you about comps and so called “over paying” .I think overpaying for an incredible copy of a card is actually a freaking steal of a deal compared to there higher ugly graded counter parts that go for 10 x what we pay. Todays over pays will be tomorrows deals 😎. Also loved the comparison with the hanks and looks like the lower grade won out that means your wallet won out as well 🥳. Now hurry up and make another video I love seeing your collection 😍👊🤙🤙
I gotta agree, I will pay a hefty premium for a perfectly centered 4 over a overpriced oc 7-9 any day. There's nothing like finding a lower grade that looks 3 grades higher. Personally I'd much rather have one of the best 2s or 3s in existence over your average 4-5. From the seller side of things, the problem is there are too many buyers out there who think a top 10% card should cost the same as recent comps. It's ALL about the individual card for me. Thanks again the comments and the chat -- it's great talking to someone as neurotic about centering as I am 😆!
Pete !! Love doubles 😊. I would choose #1 I think #2 has a slight diamond cut to it but both look amazing. Let me get back to the rest if the video now 😜👊
My natural inclination is to go with the higher grade, but in a couple of cases like this I've downgraded because I like the eye appeal of the lower grade copy better. It's rare but it happens. I love these pickups -- I still can't get over this Satchel. Thanks for the comment!
I don't *mind* having doubles of certain cards, but when it comes down to it, I only need one of each year for my Aaron run, and there are plenty of other people out there who would probably love to enjoy my extra. Keeping it to myself and not putting it out on display seems a waste to me. As long as I have the best example I can find/afford, I'm good. Also I find selling stuff to be as much fun as buying stuff sometimes. There's an art to buying lower grade, selling for some profit, and putting that profit towards a higher grade example. There's always a challenge to be had. I'm not saying it's normal lol!! Thanks for the comment - good question!
I'm guessing it's just a typo but I love the 56 Aaron as well! The 55 seems harder to find perfectly centered. For now I'm happy with either of these. I think I'm keeping #1 though. And thanks this Satchel is just a stunner... You don't see many like this! Thanks for the comment dude!
I agree -- they're both stunning cards. I've been happy with that 3 for a long time - it was one of the first big iconic vintage cards I ever bought, but I saw this SGC 4 and obviously I couldn't walk away from it. Thanks for the comment!
It was great getting to meet you Pete! We’ve all heard so much from Mookie’s channel and it’s so cool you decided to start your own channel! Amazing pickups. It’s always great when you can find cards in a condition that present way better than the assigned grade
Great meeting you Joe. I only wish I had more time to talk to everyone. I still feel kinda crazy starting my own channel but people in the community I met at the National were so encouraging and supportive I couldn't let them down! Thanks and I totally agree -- personally I find that to be the MOST exciting thing about buying cards these days is finding copies that have eye appeal way above their grade... those top 1% for the grade kind of cards. Even better when you get a good deal on one. Looking forward to talking more.
I would pick #1 because I thought I saw something on the left edge of #2. Either way, great looking cards that are a must to have. I ate with Mookie at the Park Ridge Diner on Sunday morning and then drove to Hillsdale NJ. Ever heard of it?
LOL What were you doing in my neck of the woods? And yeah I found a small wrinkle or indentation of some kind on the top center edge of #2. There may also be some wear along the left edge, you're right. So now I'm back to #1. Anyway, where abouts do you live?
@@50-Fifty-Vintage I live in Nebraska and was at the Florentine Gardens for a reception. And to investigate the alleged pinhole controversy. lol I get to NY about once a year.
I agree! It doesn't matter where or when, if I see a Ruth card, I'm always checking it out. I don't care how many times I look at the same Goudeys, they're all beautiful and such important artifacts. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it!
Hi Pete. Awesome pickups, that Paige upgrade is a beauty. I would probably keep #1, as the colours look a tad brighter, and it's a newer label. Talk soon my friend.
You know you're the first person to point out that Aaron #1 has a newer slab than #2. That in itself is a big selling point, but I also agree the color and centering is slightly better too. Back when I was just getting back into collecting, I believed a higher grade always meant it was a better card. Not the case! Thanks again - I'm glad I got to share this Paige with people, it's killer. I love these comments, keep em coming!
Like everyone else, I also liked #1 better. I thought the color and clarity was just slightly better. Congrats on the Paige upgrade. That card is on my list to buy and I was aiming for a great looking front card in around a 3. Please get my number from Mookie or Graig and let me know how much you were thinking for it.
John, Mookie just told me yesterday that you had said in a video that you were looking for a new Paige and you said $850 was the exact number you were looking to spend... Whoa that's crazy! I know you told me that was the $ you were thinking of, but I had no idea you actually predicted it beforehand. I definitely had not seen you say that before, so that's kinda awesome. I hope you're loving it - I know I did! Thanks again for the comments!
Would keep #1, the image looks clearer and crispy. I can't really see anything noticeably wrong. The 2nd Aaron is fine, but there are few flaws, though for a 2nd year Aaron, I would be happy, with happy either. But probably #1.
You're totally right, they're both killer cards, but I think #1 wins out due to slightly better centering and color. This was really helpful for me personally because sometimes I can stare at a card for hours and I'll overlook some really subtle flaws like this. I learned a lesson from this for sure. Thanks again for the comment!
Thanks Theo, you picked the winner -- #1 is the keeper. That was a big upgrade fail -- it was early on after getting back into the hobby and I think the dealer helped talk me into buying that 4, and I stupidly assumed the higher grade meant higher quality. I've definitely learned that's not always the case. And this Paige is so killer... I know they're out there, but I personally haven't seen many copies this well centered, so I had to have it. Thanks again I appreciate the comments!!
Hey Pete, great video, and welcome to the community! I watched this video on my phone, but from what I can tell, I prefer number 1. It looks like a cleaner image and may be a little better centered. Congrats on your pick-ups. Love the deckle edge cards, and your Satchel Paige is beautiful. I love your guitar collection as well and would like to see more of those at some point!
Thanks BIlly - great meeting you at the National if I haven't said it before (sorry, lots of new names!). I think you're right about Aaron #1. That seems to have won the audience poll by a landslide, although #2 is a higher grade. Crazy when that happens. And Mookie has me a little paranoid I'm going to alienate the card audience if I focus too much on the guitars, so I'm still not sure how to balance it, but I have some ideas brewing. Really appreciate the comment!
