Pat Metheny Group albums ranked Strongest to Weakest (my opinion) Letter From Home We Live Here Speaking of Now (Still Life) Talking Quartet Imaginary Day American Garage Pat Metheny Group (Self Titled) The Falcon & The Snowman Offramp The Way Up
PMG (1978), Offramp, First Circle, Still Life (Talking), and Letter from Home are amazing albums. I need to spend more time with the others but these are my favorites so far having been a fan for several years now. Still feel so new to Pat’s world but one thing is for certain, he’s played with a whole lot of major talents over the years. His music just keeps on giving.
I have the same albums you have in my list, but I have them all in a 11-way tie for number one, because I have to include Secret Story. Yeah, I know, but I'm counting it as a PMG, and you can't talk me out of it.
Very interesting ranking, dude. Aa a Pat Metheny fan I'm going to pay more attention net time I will listen to The Way Up, thanks for the information. Only one thing, I really like a lot the album that you put on the last position, the number 12, We liive here. There are actually two tunes that are specially amazing, "To the end of the world", and "Here to stay". Really amazing and grooving tunes...
Right out of the box, I was stunned with the choice of "We Live Here" put at the bottom of your list. 3 songs in particular, are iconic. "Here to Stay", "Red Sky" and the epic "To the End of the World". Everyone has different opinions, and I agree there's not a clunker in the lot, but I was just a little stunned.
I realize it's your list but I was kinda bummed that first circle wasn't at least in your top 3. 😂 That being said, it's always great to encounter a "yung'un" who's into the PMG. 😁
Well, to be fair, this was over 2 years ago. If I did this now the list would be different because I've had more time with these different albums. Ranking PMG is very hard though because each album is a masterpiece
Right on brother. Discovered him back in 79 when I heard New Chautauqua. Went to Singapore in 2021 just to watch him live.( I'm from Manila ). A century from now PMG with Lyle Mays will be seen as geniuses like the Mozart of jazz. His body of work is just unparalleled in beauty and complexity with its layers of harmonies, wordless singing and virtuoso performances from everyone in his band.
Nice review! I just discovered your channel. I am very impressed with you own musical performances and writing after watching your other videos. When I lived in Finland I saw the Watch in Helsinki at least two times back in the 2000's. I saw them perform Selling England and Foxtrot and then Seconds Out the last time I saw them. They also played some of their own music. A great band. Again, a nice review!
Nice list, but for me First Circle is so precious. The hand claps going into the main theme is unforgettable imo, followed by the build up of the track. Also Lyle Mays composition Cote D'azur from We live here, is probably Lyle's zenith as a premier jazz pianist and composer. I can't make a list as so many tunes from this ensemble are a basis for 20/21 st century jazz and maybe beyond. They are and were an integral part of jazz as we know it. RIP Lyle Mays. 👌
Brazilian influences in Letter From Home which is one of my favourites, Still Life Talkin , Speaking Of Now. Love these albums. The Way Up is a melancholy of beautiful sound arrangement. Love the ranking, similar to what I would do. 👍 Great
