Loved the way you concluded the video by reminding us neither to idealise nor villify Freud because either of the directions is cultism. We need more thinkers than cults. Very informative and interesting video! Looking forward to learn the concepts in the next lecture!

There are hardly any people in our field who talk in such a nuanced manner and encourage ambivalence about Freud like this- this was so amazing to listen to!

Radhika, I first learned in 1959 that "conditioned" was the wrong translation, as Gantt and Korzybski had said. So good that Todes has helped to set the record straight. I ordered the book about a week ago, and am so glad to come here today and see your fine review of it! I'm writing a chapter on Pavlov titled "the Unconditional-Conditional Spectrum," so I'm thrilled by your enthusiasm. It's a crime that Pavlov and his work are so misunderstood!!

How right you are, RB! This is a magnificent work. I have read only 100 pages and can't put it down. I first heard about this book via the channel Silicon Curtain, which is devoted solely to Russia and the war in Ukraine. I am a Russian graduate and familiar with much of the background history, but even so the introductory chapter filled in all sorts of gaps in my knowledge. The background details, for example, the description of St Petersburg as IP arrives to begin his student life there, is so real you feel Todes must have been there in 1870. The depth of his research is unbelievable. You recommend it to psychologists. I would also recommend it to anyone interested in the history of science and Russian politics and social history. It's a shame it is not better known. I have not seen or heard it mentioned in the UK apart from in that YT channel. Apart from anything else it is so utterly readable.Congratulations on your impeccable English, by the way.

very well articulate radhika. the analysis has put it in a must read asap category.coming from military background, i empathise with the points you mention. unfortunately in the indian context, though absolutely relevant, is hardly spoken and least debated.

Okay, first off, pronunciations of some psychologists can really give a tough time at time, hahaha. But all said and done, the review was really good. Would really lay hands on it some day. Thanks
