There are several puukko knives out there, and not all of them look like Mora. This one on the other hand looks like a Mora. I believe Mitch fully designed this knife after a Mora. All he ever used was Mora before this knife showed up.
@TeaysRiverBushlore
@TeaysRiverBushlore 5 лет назад
You may be right about that, but many knives have been modeled after the puukko ,they’ve been around for thousands of years and many variations. I never really followed mr. Mitchell so I can’t disagree with you but mora is not the original puukko. Mora started out as a small fishing guide company that started offering their clientele a ‘fishing companion knife’ for taking their guided packages and the knife grew rapidly in popularity and you know the rest of the story.

I use essential oils myself and for the most part even here in Alaska they do pretty good. But there are those times and places that i still end up using other thing's. Now this last year i started trying this new picaridin stuff, because it's supposed to be as effective as deet without it eating your flesh off. I was actually pretty surprised how well it works. As for a jessmuck I'd really like to try one out myself.

The reason for the difference in the scandi knife grind genesis vs nsk is the thickness. The genesis is 1/8th and the nsk is 3/32nd and the blade heights are different so even though they have different grind heights the grind angle is similar but the nsk will have less resistance going through wood due to blade thickness. Mitch also reshaped the handle in the new model that just came out this week.
@TeaysRiverBushlore
@TeaysRiverBushlore 7 лет назад
Thanks for the info , Roland. I have other 3/32" blades that have quite a bit more grind to them . The mora companion is about the same thickness and has a higher scandi but I'm sure the angle is also very different. Less resistance is a Heritage Bushcrafter for me . Thanks for the comment and view ,brother.

I don't have much use or any respect for batoning with a knife. It shows a complete lack of knowledge about knives, and about proper tools to carry into the wild. That said, I do like Jeff White knives for their look and feel. I'm not as impressed with the 1095 they use. It's low on chrome and Vanadium, and softer than I like 1095 to be. I want nothing to do with D2 steel. It chips, and you can't sharpen it without a diamond or ceramic sharpener, which means you sharpen it by cutting steel, rather than by polishing steel. This means a shorter life for the blade. Most won't use a knife often enough for this to matter much, but if I'm going to own a knife, I'm going to use it nearly every day. There is no possible way to sharpen D2 without a diamond sharpener, so they make lousy wilderness knives. I also don't want a ninety degree spine on a knife. It's silly. Knives, particularly bushcraft knives, are supposed to be used for carving early and often, and a ninety degree spine makes this far harder than it should be. And don't you think the design of that blade is truly silly in and of itself? And why on earth would anyone put a hollow grind on a custom knife? The hollow grind is the worst grind in existence. The only reason any knife is made with a hollow grind is because this is the only grind that can be made by single pass cutting during the manufacturing process. A cutter drops down and grinds both sides of the blade at once, which means it's much cheaper to make hollow grind. At one time, there was no other way to make a knife by automation because technology simply couldn't do anything else. This is the only reason the hollow grind even exists. I don't know why anyone would put a hollow grind on a custom knife, or even how they would do so? I do know I wouldn't give a dollar for a large knife with a hollow grind. They truly suck, and have a very short life expectancy compared to other grinds. Hollow grinds aren't bad on small pocketknives, but even there, a flat grind is vastly superior. I do love the Condor Bushcraft Basic, though the Condor Kephart is, I think, a better knife. The new Huron is better than any other Condor, but more pricey because of the 1095 steel. I actually think the Bushlore is much better than the Bushcraft Basic, and the Mini Bushlore is better than the full size Bushlore. I love Mora knives, but I've seen too many people slice their fingers with the Classic to want to own one myself. There is one model of the classic that has a fairly large finger guard, but the ones without finger guards are just too dangerous, in my opinion. Anyway, a new model Mora Companion with the 4.1 inch blade is a far better knife in every way. Many Mora knives do have a one eighth inch spine, which according to Kephart, is perfect. All the Old Hickory knives I've seen use 1095 steel, not 1075. The seven inch Old Hickory, which is the most common size, fits perfectly in a Ka-Bar sheath, which you can buy on Amazon for eight dollars. I prefer leather over Kydex any day, so that's what I use for an Old Hickory. Anyway, no product in the world is more overpriced than expensive knives. If people knew how little it costs to make a three hundred dollar production knife, they'd march on the maker with pitchforks and torches. It often costs less to make a three hundred dollar production knife than it does to make a forty dollar knife from a lesser known company, even when both knives use the same steel, and the same design. There's one knife on the market that costs just under a thousand dollars because of the name attached, even though it has the exact same design, and uses the exact same steel, as several thirty-five to forty-five dollar knives. It's a production knife, and costs just about twenty dollars to make, but people either don't know this, or they're willing to pay nine hundred and eighty dollars just for the person's name on the knife. There are also some well known knives with a well-known name on them that run from two to three hundred dollars, but that use a low grade, non CV 1095 that's only heat treated and tempered to around 55 Rockwell. Unless a knife is a true custom knife made to your specific design, which is not the same thing as "handmade", you are almost certainly being gouged if you pay more than a hundred dollars for it. Of course, this means the MSRP may be up to a hundred and twenty-five dollars. Beyond this, you're paying for name, not quality, and many knives under sixty dollars, or even under thirty dollars, as with Mora knives, are of equally high quality.

Teays River Bushlore "Vast Knife Knowledge" 🤣🤣🤣 More like "a bunch of stuff repeated like parrots in a bushcraft forum" You can't say anything about ALL KNIVES and "proper use". Lots of knives, lots of design intent. Some are made for batoning. Every time I hear someone say "it costs $20 to make a $300 knife" I hesitate to reply for fear that I'm being mean to someone with a handicap or learning disability. If all they think goes into making something is raw material, they have no business commenting on the knife making industry. Materials LABOR time equipment costs lots and lots of abrasive belts shipping costs space rental/mortgage utilities cost the SKILL of the maker ... and on and on. How about all that plus a fair living wage? Who cares what raw materials cost? Do YOU have the time, knowledge, equipment, space, and SKILL to turn those raw materials into something worth having, like a nice heat treated knife that the maker probably gave you a good warranty on? I'm getting you don't. You'd just have a bunch of raw materials on a table and no knife. GTFOH with that nonsense! 🤣🤣🤣
