The ancient Egyptians used a sand road to build the pyramids, where pieces of stone were placed on wooden sleds with round palm tree trunks underneath them, acting like wheels. The sleds were pulled with ropes and bulls, with water sprinkled on the sand to facilitate the pulling process.
I don't think they did all that for a pharaoh resting place. I think they're huge to be seen by the Gods & a power status to be viewed from all around. They had rock & sand with nothing else to do. Today we get up for work & make a living, well the pyramids were their job & a reason to get up in the morning. Power, status, ambition, pride... Thousands put their heart & soul into it everyday & 4500 years later there it stands.
