IMO, hands down combines THE most saddest, powerful and hauntingly beautiful elements wrapped up in one song unlike any other in music history. And as you correctly mentioned about the wailing of the GREAT Claire Torrey being the wail of trying to simultaneously accept/fight against pending death (e.g. maybe after learning about a terminal diagnosis, etc.). And then the wailing subsides, as the person eventually accepts his/her pending death. But after hearing this song MANY times over the years, my eyes still well up with emotion from listening to this masterpiece. As usual, great analysis by you, and glad you finally got to experience one of Floyd's vintage classics.
You're funny.. I would think that the unconscious latent motivation for what everyone does is "LOVE", even more so for the most brutal violent actions one can do... not fear of death ! But hey, that's me.
Floyd is not mere music. It is from the universe, through the band then straight into your soul. You really need to explore their catalogue. Preferably live.....I have seen them twice and, I have seen more than my share of "end game" concerts.....live....they are light years from the next memorable concerts. It is a spiritual event.
From another great RUSH song "If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice". Freewill RUSH in 1980. NP was amazing in so many ways. I enjoyed your reaction.
RUSH is known for their creative use of time signatures with frequent changes and absolute connection between the members of the band. They maintained the same members for their entire career. When Neil Peart passed their was no question of replacing him. The band was a team of 3 that was uncompromising. When one member needed a break the band took a break. They were a cohesive unit that lived loyalty to the greater whole. "All the world is indeed a stage, we are merely players, performers and portrayers, each another's audience outside the gilded cage". Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you so much for choosing REN....he is the most authentic genius of this moment. I came to know him via Sinead O' Connor. Maybe she is also very interesting for you. Big hug for you. Please listen to Sinead ....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6roqjkKCnIk.htmlfeature=shared And Feel So Different - Live is also amazing, Sinead is a journey just like Ren.
I watch them because they are one of the few channels that have dug deep into the music of Therion, the godfathers of symphonic metal. Much of the music that they react to has both messages as well as intricate technical skill regardless of who the performers are.
Led Zeppelin's BBC sessions a pair of good headphones and a darkroom..... I spent a lot of time like that, and the trips those tracks took me on. The past is always safe. We know the outcome. Even bad things that have happened, we know what the result is. The future is uncertian. We dont know the outcome. I think we all have some anxiety about that.
Check this Muddy Waters song out. It was the inspiration of the Zeppelin version. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pM8_HuQ0b34.htmlsi=o78nQh-seHRSVwvU
Lolli would probably deny it or just blush but she is really a great teacher.. her super power is her observations.. she sees things others don't because no one ever told her she couldn't .. so she'll talk about things that make so much sense but that I never heard in years of choral training. Also because of her power of observation she is a world class mimic.. Did you notice her imitating your voice? She's incredible.
As others have said. You have caught on sooooo fast to Neil's feelings to the fans. If you truely want to go down the rabbit hole of Rush... i would suggest La Villa Strangiato. or Xanadu.
Arjen says he would be too critical to be a reactor, but I'm not convinced that's actually true, because one of the notable things about him is that he is remorselessly positive about everyone he meets and works with. Watch his 'making of/BTS' videos and see what a genuinely nice guy he is. OK, maybe it's a bit different having a great artist over (that you are already familiar with) to record something, and doing semi-random reaction videos, but still in practice people try to react to things they like, or at least find interesting. I suspect Arjen would be quite good at it, and his musical knowledge would make for interesting analysis. Anyway, thanks for an interesting interview, with a bit more depth than is typical.
Great reaction Rosie. This song was written by drummer Neil Peart who is a self identified introvert and he never liked the fame that went along with being a rock star. Oddly he is recognized as one of the greatest drummers of all time, so he got a lot of attention
Arjen: I noted your list of musical analysis channels you find worthwhile and it's a lot like mine. Try 'Phil Zero'. He has good musical knowledge and I think has an interesting take.
Alex Lifeson is a top notch guitarist but is often underrated because of his bandmates. Geddy Lee (vocals/bass/synths/foot triggered synths) is considered one of the best bassists in the business. Neil Peart (drums & percussion/almost all lyrics - RIP) was considered to be one of the very best rock drummers of all time. And a top lyricist as well. Neil was an incredible performer, but offstage was an introvert. Geddy was an extrovert and Alex is essentially a class clown. As such, they did the vast majority of interviews without Neil. Neil always felt at a great disadvantage meeting fans who knew all about him and acted and felt as if they knew him, while he knew nothing about them. Rush's first album was released in 1974 with original drumner John Rutsey, who left due to health reasons. Neil joined and the band lineup never changed again. The 1997-2002 hiatus was because on a few months, Neil's wife died of cancer and then their daughter was killed in a car crash. He took a break and the band thought that might be it, but Neil started writing and playing again. Neil retired in 2016 after he felt he was no longer capable of playing at the level he demanded of himself. A year later he was diagnosed with brain cancer. He died in 2020. Only his friends and family knew about his illness before his death.
