I have spent over 50 years watching, listening, reading and collecting spaceflight related materials, and building space models for over 45 years. This channel provides a venue for providing access to some of the audio & video editing and production I have done in relation to this interest.
WOMAN JOURNALIST #1: "It's beautiful, it's a beautiful show." WOMAN JOURNALIST #2: "People would give thousands of dollars to see what we've seen." WOMAN JOURNALIST #1: "Just to see her roll out all completely done, y'know? First time we've ever seen her away from her scaffolding. ... Big difference, she looked like a newborn bird. It's beautiful now. I wanna see her fly..."
I remember reading how the street lights etc were set in sleeves on the road from the Shuttle factory in Palmdale to Dryden so they could be removed easily to make room for the wings.
It landed at Northrup Strip once, was loaded then flew to the NASA facility in El Paso. We saw it taking off as we drove to the missile range that day to work.
As a pilot, this was a thing of beauty to behold. Fantastic camera work. As a glider, it is a testimonial success to the engineering design team this thing was able to do that. A rocket powered glider that does not use the rockets while in earths atmosphere. Incredible. That 747 was impressive as well. It is truly sad that they retired the shuttles. That is when an astronaut pilot was at his best. Back to the tube that goes up, the capsule that comes down with a parachute. Not nearly as cool to watch. IMO.

Such a shame there is nothing in the news for our country to be proud of anymore. Anything space related to me was moving forward and getting smarter on things in life. Just seems like the human race is going backwards on trying to be more knowledgeable in general. I still love watching all this stuff due to it makes me feel like our nation went after things for our constant learning. Now its just all memeories....sad
I remember in elementary school in the 3rd grade in 1977, all classes were gathered together in our library to watch this. I didn't know what was going on, but I did recognize the Space Shuttle. My father worked at Kelly AFB at the time. You can imagine my excitement when he told me the 747 and Columbia were stopping over at Kelly on their way back to Cape Canaveral. It was a sight to behold both aircraft up close. Later when Young and Crippen went up in the Columbia, it all made sense. Small world, across from our elementary school was Sul Ross middle school where Crippen's sister-in-law, was a teacher there. I can't believe the shuttle program is over, but I was fortunate to see the program from its inception to dissipation. It seems like yesterday that I witnessed this.
What a great time in aviation and space flight!! So sad to see it's over. By defunding NASA and 'privatising' space flight and space exploration, all we have now are arrogant fools like Musk who's more concerned with fighting pointless yet destructive culture wars to soothe his brittle, overinflated ego which results in a space exploration industry that costs 10x as much to produce 1/5 of what NASA was capable of doing during it's hey day. Such a shame to see how far backwards we've gone since 1977.
@@D.J.Trump2024MAGA moonraker was published before the space shuttle had ever flown, while in its concept phase. if you actually watched moonraker you would see that the mooraker shuttles litealy look like toys when they launch, which is not the case with the shuttles in this documentary, or in archived footage. get it right.
this is more than 30 fucking years ago, cmon humans go build more crazy shit. stop sitting around all day and forcing the youth to follow in your lazy uninspiring, insignificant footsteps.
My grandfather worked for Link Aerospace during this period, and ended up assisting with the return to flight after Challenger, it's always cool to see the 747 Carrier doing it's job, though.
