Hello, I’m Vareck and I like teh! This is where I share my experience and views on active travel in Singapore and abroad! 🚲 Thanks for stopping by, and have a good morning! ☕️
That's because those from upstairs treat us like ".o..e ..a. .e.o..-..a.. ....e ..ea..e.ou., .o..-... .ea.a...". The Panel only .i.e. a ..i.. e.e .o. ..o.e ..o ..i.e, while viewing those who do not with a .i. .a..i..i.. ..a... We need petitions like these to slap some sense in to them.
stumbled across this video and i love the effort put into research, providing historical background, editing etc!! don't usually comment but i genuinely enjoyed watching this video :-)
One of my favourite bike trails is the Djerring trail. With the Level Crossing removals from Caulfield-Dandenong, there's a trail between the two rail bridges and it's very modern. Along the trail are also small parks, gyms, basketball courts, tennis courts and more. It's a very great design.
I visited Singapore recently, I have spent a fair bit of time there over my life but this is the first time I was training for a half marathon at the same time so I went out in the early morning to run and realised just how hostile to pedestrians some parts of the city are (in this case the downtown core). Running from Marina Bay and then up the Singapore River/canal (though there was some crossings along the canal that should be ped priority but you had to wait for slow lights to change) was great and very easy but deviate from that and its impossible to cross the stroads without huge wait times and in some places inadequate or closed off overpasses. Also happened to be the first time I visited since starting postgrad urban planning studies which has changed my perceptions on the way things work.
I didn't go there because I slept in later 😂😂😂 But seeing and hearing how successful this event was, I hope this will gradually become a full day event every once a month to every Sunday and subsequently become part of our traffic and city planning in longer term. Hopefully some of the smaller streets like you mentioned will also be included in the Car-Free Sunday events and eventually become pedestrianised. The longer and larger roads can have 2 lanes in each direction redesignated as bus priority lanes and cycling lanes. I believe Singapore can do this and more if our politicians are willing to do so which I believe they are starting to warm up to the idea.
i think it's pretty apparent in your comparison clips that places look, feel, and simply become a lot more vibrant when there are people physically out and about in the city. And the numbers out and about on car-free sunday show that it's simply not true that people won't cycle in singapore because of the weather.
So is car-free sunday, like every sunday? That would be awesome. In southern California, we don't have many of these events. San Diego stopped doing them as well. But LA hosts a car-free day like this every few months. I am going to my first one in a few weeks in LA, going down Venice Blvd to the beach
As I said on your last video as well, I've never visited a country that felt so optimized for carless transportation as Singapore! Beside public transit being incredible, the city looks marvellous to bike through! Being my European self, I might just plan a trip to visit Singapore when they are having a next car-free sunday. It looks like such a treat to rent a bike and cruise through these impressive roads. What an exciting evolution!
I always thought Singapore would be well served by going car-lite and reconfiguring the street hierarchy to one more like the Dutch or Barcelonans enjoy where pedestrians and bikes have safe, direct through routes while cars must take longer less-direct but well designed thoroughfares, thereby separating the modes of traffic more. it wouldn't require much in the way of infrastructure when normal maintenance schedules arise and can be done in conjunction with the current park connector, MRT, and town redevelopment schemes. Especially seeing several developments like the Jurong Region Line being built necessitating the need for streets reconstruction anyway, bikeway and ped-way improvements could be made right now.
