Hi! I'm a single Reformed believer in Jesus Christ (Reformed Baptist). Christ is my Lord and Savior. We are all born mired in sin and are totally depraved (sin touches every aspect of our being), but God so loves us that He has incarnated as a man (100% God and 100% man), born from a virgin woman Mary, and He lived a sinless life of perfect obedience to the Father. Christ died on the Cross as a propitiation for our sin and conquered death, sin, and Satan, by resurrecting on the 3rd day, on Easter Sunday! If you sincerely repent of your sins and believe the Gospel you will become a new creation and will spend eternity with the Lord.
Thank you for uploading this masterpiece! 🙏 Most beautiful memories come to mind while listening. Blessed be anyone listening. All the glory to God Almighty!
I saw this on VHS as a child and it holds a wonderful place in my memory. This program made the Messiah come to life for me. It taught me a love for Baroque music and classical singing which I train in now.
I love this performance and recording. Thank you so much for sharing it with us again. Emma Kirkby is, of course, the proverbial icing on the cake. Marvellous.
Yes the filmography and setting, compared to 2022, is not the best. But this performance is sublime and I feel nostalgic watching these videos with their poor lighting and camera glare, as that's what I grew up watching
In my opinion....this is the best work that Monsieur Handel ever wrote; and the late Christopher Hogwood’s recording of this great work...with his academy of Ancient music still remains the very best today; out of all the other recordings that I’ve ever heard. The fact that he recorded Handel’s messiah in a church as opposed to a hall or other venue made his recording spot on. Have a listen to Trevor Pinnock’s recording...and it sounds very dry. Not really ideal for a great work such as this. The solo vocals and male / boy treble choir sounds magnificent too. Although i doubt very much if Handel would have ever used a boy treble Choir in his heyday. But again....very articulate and spot on. It’s also nice, to see in this video ( never seen it before) original band members from that particular period (1982) The first time i bought this vinyl box record set was back in 1982. My dad ordered it from a record shop. Although now i listen to this recording on a CD in which i bought many years ago. And even....now today; i still love listening to this fantastic work. I’ve never as yet....though, listened to the blue ray version disc; so I’m looking forward to that... one day perhaps. Most probably not much different to the original 💿 CD disc. i can also tell very easily, in this video; that.... this not the actual CD 💿 recording. But It would have been great if this particular recording on DVD was on blue ray. Handel’s “Anthem for the foundling hospital”. Sounds fantastic too. If you take a look on cispera Espera RU-vid channel; her uploaded version of Handel’s “ rejoice greatly; oh daughter of Zion” sounds even better on RU-vid. The video quality looks slightly better. It’s the same video clip; it just sounds much better. Saturday afternoon at 17:18H 23rd January 2021. U.K. 🇬🇧 Southampton.
Oh yes....sorry; Handel is a German composer. I’ve always known that...for years. But It’s me! that has the french! Tuesday afternoon at 15:25H. 2nd February 2021. U.K. 🇬🇧 Southampton.
This recording, played from cassette tapes that my Mum received as a 21st birthday present the year it was recorded, made my 14-year-old-self fall in love with Classical music. By far the best ever recording!
This is indeed a smashing rendition! The others I find are slower but the tempo this starts out with is just right to express joy! Overall a good performance!
Holy crap, 240p, yet the audio quality and sheer brilliance of these performers eclipse that of most recent renditions despite better recording technology today. And those boys singing technically difficult passages at certain times with such ease! Really impressive!
This fantastic version of the Messiah was also available in the best video format of all times: LaserDisc with digital sound. I am the lucky possessor of a copy.
For me the highlight of this performance is Carolyn Watkinson in what for me is a most moving rendition of "Oh Though that tellest good tidings to Zion" with the chorus. I really enjoyed Carolyn joining in to encourage her Alto's. Wonderful. A shame though that this is in a poor 240p.
Take a look at the "super closeups" of Carolyn Watkinson, from 54:47 onward. See the obvious honesty of her expressed emotions of sympathy and outrage, at the very point of her song, "He Was Despised" - at the very core meaning of Messiah itself, to understand why the producers called for such closeups. For me, it leaves all the other renditions of Messiah flat and uninspiring in comparison. Yes, there are other renditions far more spectacular and glamorous, involving diva performances in long-shots - but none more meaningful and intimate than this one. Messiah is a lesson, rather than a spectacle.
