I don't remember the Triangles, but I certainly do remember The Rocket and The Good Neighbours. A stroke of luck getting a sneak peak and an interview. Well Done
Wow . When we moved to Leicester from Malawi in 1977 we stayed with my cousin in bursdon court for a few weeks. It actually was very neat and tidy back then. I used to get embarrassed when the ladies called me luv🤣🤣🤣. I was 10 years old lol. Thank you
Ive always said if someone turns that old bridge in a restaurant like underneath and a rooftop terrace bar restaurant would be a great business but would need a lot of money to turn it into onr first
Remember how Granby Halls was wasteland/car park for years? How Frog Island was desolate for years? Suggest Mayoral skulduggery for the resultant sale of prime land for a pound! The long term strategy is to prove the land 'unsaleable' and then give it away to family, friends and those prepared to 'donate' large sums to personal pockets! All of the 'pork pie' libraries are currently being relocated to leisure centres and in a decade - these beautiful buildings will be acquired by those to whom they've already been promised. Perhaps one day.....some heads will be required for the personal pillaging of Leicester's heritage.
My friends used to live in one of these houses - we had a party one night and one of us was drunk in the back garden and actually fell into the river. Very funny, and yes he was OK, if a bit cold.
LOL, it is weird how close those gardens are to the river! And from what I can remember there was no wall or anything at the back of the garden, just straight in!
Walk my dogs down this stretch often, from the medieval pack horse bridge to the the carpark near the lock, and often use the great central way as well, the burnt out barge as now gone ( August) yes it is a gas pipe there used to be a gasometer there to, my grandmother worked at st Mary's mill in the 1910s,it's still in use believe it or not, aylestone meadows used to be a landfill in the 50s and 60s and me and my mates played down there regularly in the 60s it was a lot different then
Wow! Thanks for all this info, really interesting stuff. It's a great place now, I love walking and running round there although not done much running recently, need a bit of a kick...........
Leicester city council paid the grand sum of £1 for this plot of land. They are now in the process of renovating them all with partnership contractors. We were called in today to start work.
Absolutely John.... There are so many people who are homeless and even more who are disabled and cannot get a bungalow to suit their needs because generally bungalows are only for those who are over 55. Come on builders and councils - we need more social housing and more bungalows available for the disabled.
@@jaywebb3141 Couldn’t agree more Jay. These small bungalows are ideal housing for so many different people, and they don’t need a lot of land to develop them on either.
You’d think if there was a national tv campaign (I haven’t watched tv for years… do people still watch tele?) they could generate a lot of interest but the houses don’t come with a job package deal, so it wouldn’t be straightforward. But there are many thousands of people trying to get on the property ladder, if there were enough people tempted and could find work in the area, even if you/they could make a success of a portion of the properties initially that would make the area more attractive and hopefully have a snowball effect
@@leicesterliving I believe in Africa, (and China) China has built very substantial urban areas that just don’t have the key factors to draw people. I’m sure you are aware of that, it’s rather well known, though most of us don’t appreciate the sheer scale of the waste.
I suppose the problem is, if you don’t have a relatively high percentage of responsible people, on fairly good incomes, who will maintain the properties it would sadly perhaps be better to let them go to ruin. You don’t want a haven of crime and squalor
I'm Leicester born in 81 i was born in General Hospital, the area around their use to be rough Rowlatts Hill Estate Thurnby Lodge in the other side and Northfields Futher down Uppingham road. These are where the English lads were rough, but there were also Sikh gangs knocking about the same time as Baby Squad like the the Wongs in Highfields Imperial pub. There were other Sikh gangsters at that time I can't mention because I might get filled in.
The councils should be building more and providing basic facilities for more people caught in the debt trap. The "right to buy" messed this up because the money that was generated by selling council houses, did not go back to making more council houses.
And no bro, simple is how it needs to be. We need to regenerate and protect all of our society. i really appreciate watching this becuase i emmigrated to Indonesia ten years ago having been raised and lived in Leicester all my youth. I miss it.
Yeah you really are right. The council/government sold all these houses off for pennies and the mad thing that has been happening over the last 6-7 years is that the council have been buying them back from owner occupiers for full market value!!!! Buy house off council for £60,000, sell back to them for £225,000……you couldn’t make it up!!!!😮😮
@@leicesterliving Newcastle. Yes I had to get a rid of a lot of stuff before I moved in. Moved from a 1 bed flat but my bungalow is significantly smaller. I think neighbours make all the difference too, it's so peaceful.
Are these council properties, or privately owned? If they are council, then Leicester council should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Letting these homes sit unoccupied while people are homeless or living in unsuitable accommodation. If they are private, then the owner should be forced to use them, or lose them. Either way it's yet another symptom of our corrupt and decaying society.
@@leicesterliving All the properties shown used to be owned and managed by the NHS/UHL, until Leicester City Council purchased the land and its properties off them. Since then, very little has been done.
Nah it's all good just there, some quite expensive housing literally a few hundred yards away in Rowley Fields. Area immediately off where I am is Braunstone Estate where house prices have boomed in the last 10 years!
If that's your definition of rough you need to travel a bit more and I normally agree large parts of Leicester are rough but that's the case for most of the uk including so called working class white areas
@@CarlTebbutt Yeah it is defo NOT ROUGH just there at all! Massively agree with you, every major town and city has it's parts which are a little tasty, this is certainly not one of them
I live in one of the flats on fosse south and they're poorly maintained, council doesn't care, had to fight to get a proper lock on the gate as smackheads kept camping and doing drugs in the court yard area. In the process of trying to move out of the area
@@markgoss9150 ah mate, that’s absolutely rubbish. Where exactly in Fosse South are you pal? Could be worth me doing something round there and showing people what is really going on.
I love the Westcotes area. There used to be a pub on Latimer street, two terraced houses knocked into one, don't know whether it's still there. Could that have been what the Gold Label sign was about?
Such happy memories of staying with my grandparents on Wilberforce Road, off Upperton Road. They went to a church on Narborough Road and had an allotment down towards Kingsway.thank you
The expensive mews houses of London (think Kensington and Chelsea) were once "garages" at the end of the garden. It's becoming fashionable in costly cities in Aus and Canada to convert the garage into a "Lane House" which is essentially the same.
@@leicesterliving my fiend said if the a subsideance yes but ....theese houses are not moving or crumbleing down ....i feel sick both my kids are in leicester hostels and this is there to see omg 🥹🥺😭
@@leicesterliving ow nooo why not just rip down a good market an spent council money building a new market ......its riddiculous the housing sytem is failing the asylum seekers have filled our hotels and our ex military on the streets sorry bbe im fraustrated with the whole city xx
People living in garages ain’t knew m8,in certain areas of London people exploit new arrivals and charge them upto £1000 a week to let them live in them. Happens everywhere
@@supremebeing2069 It’s a sad state of affairs isn’t it! Doesn’t surprise me, just frustrating with how many buildings are left empty that could be used for housing.
