Hi fellow fae path goer! I was looking for Faery books when I found your channel. I do not have either of these books yet. I have been on the fence with it. I've done Emily Carding Faery Craft book /excersizes/ workshop and really enjoyed that. I'm currently going through a Wentz book too. There's a lot in it. So I read a little every day. Oh my goodness about the willow falling. Keep us updated on how that grows ❤

The 4 books are amazing. I get obsessed with things and for years I didnt realise there were 4, I'm on the fourth and I buy a lot of books by Hoffman, she brings a story together like boss. You need to read these if you are obsessed with the movie. The whole root through the book is the curse. How trying to save people from harm is not always the right way to go. And the law of 3 and dark magic is not an option, it's more of a debilitating cross to bare when not used in a constructive and mature way. These books have lessons and spell casting that talks about nature and kitchen witchery that is so warming.

I fully understand the conundrum of the story and characters taking on a life of their own and steering you down a path that you hadn't totally planned for. I've learned to be more loose in my planning, so I don't get derailed, because I'm along for the ride just as much as the characters are. Loved hearing you chat about your process, and I'm glad you found a method that works for you!

I love having a playlist for my novel BUT I don’t write to it. It’s funny I can’t write to lyrics but the playlist (with lyrics) is what I play when not writing like while driving or brainstorming. It brings me back to my story and gives me more scenes and tension etc. BUT YEAH- no lyrics while I’m writing! I actually LOVE to write to ASMR rooms with rainstorms or jazz or whatever the theme. You should check them out!! They have stuff for all genres without lyrics.

Oh man your review definitely makes me want to go read her works! My own WIP is an Ancient Greek fantasy epic so I’ve been trying to read all these different retellings but the ones I’ve read are a different vibe entirely with how serious and purple their prose is. I struggled through a number of them and DNF’d another because it was just not the right vibe. If you’re into the artsy pretty prose, Circe and Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller might be up your alley along with Ariadne by Jennifer Saint.

This pleases me as a psychology graduate. Characters and how they develop will somewhat depend on how writers write them and later edit them. It's really, indeed, about making them feel real but also making them feel they suit the story they are written for. Good work and I hope you keep making more videos. One thing that helps with making characters different from one another is making sure they can disagree and argue. It also helps to really make them interact with one another.

This is all really fantastic advice. As someone getting into writing stories for the first time the process of world building has been pretty daunting. I'm writing and drawing my own comic and the balance of fat/lean meat is a hard one to strike. Like adding too much is annoying, but so is having unanswered questions. Hell I like learning new little useless facts about the world's I read about. I guess the only advice I have, at least as a fantasy writer, is to not be afraid to ask "why not?" To your ideas. A lot of the beginning of my writing and drawing journey was bogged down by "why does my world need this" which is a very important question to answer. But for some things, I feel it's both fun and intriguing to have a few "why nots" in there. Like in my setting the moon and sun are giant glowing jewels in the sky, spawned front a great calamity that happened eons ago. Does this impact the story a ton? Right now, no, but I mean it's a cool idea to me and it doesn't hinder the story. So why not?
@abookishwitch5118
@abookishwitch5118 Год назад
Yes! Exactly this! Not every scrap has to be relevant as long as it doesn't slow down or detract from your story. But I agree, fantasy is about the world building for me! I'm glad this was helpful or valid for you! Thank you!
@authoreloisebahr

Great video! Thankfully I don’t struggle with world builders disease, and I think the biggest thing that helps me is keeping the information relevant and restricted to the narrative. I regularly ask myself if the MC would know or care about something like the politics and the answer is generally no - so I might make a note of a timeline of who’s in power when etc but otherwise that doesn’t make it into the book. Does leaving out a specific detail lead the reader to be confused? No? Does adding it enrich the layers of the narrative? No? Then it doesn’t need to be there.

Brighid priestess here! The flame is in Kildare, Ireland, and it actually hasn't burned continuously. It is said to have survived until the suppression of the monasteries in the 16th century, and then it was relit in the 20th century (1990s if I'm recalling correctly). Nowadays many Cills worldwide keep the flame for Brighid; some are completely pagan, others are Christian, and yet others are interfaith. Many are also gender-neutral, whereas originally it was only women who kept the flame. (I'm in one and I keep the flame 3 nights out of 20.) Also, the messages I've received from Brighid regarding the Saint, her connection to the Saint, and the church, is much less "Church tried to stamp me out and failed and so turned me into a saint" and much more "Real person chosen by me became saint, because I saw which way the wind was blowing and wasn't about to fade away to nothing". She's always been clear that when I'm searching for lore about her, the info about the Saint is fair game as anything else. (She also told me that if I was going to worship her, I had to get over any hang-ups I had regarding Christianity, because as far as she's concerned, the Christians are her people too. She is basically the definition of "interfaith cooperation" IME.) Also, totally agree with you about Mists of Avalon -- it might not be historically accurate (that we know, absent a time machine), but it is 100% a _mythic history_ & so incredibly meaningful in that regard.

This all reminds me of the history of Isis and the Virgin Mary in the ancient Mediterranean. The Goddess will always be in the hearts of humanity no matter what we call Her.
