You are correct about the winding and varied road access to heavy industry sites in Cleveland. While there are huge factories bordering Chicago in Northwest Indiana, most are not accessible and heavily guarded.

In the 80s, this was a great place to take black & white photos,...there were lots of contrasting shapes. Factory buildings, smoke stacks, large piles of aggregate, like gravel in different sizes, Black painted iron bridge scaffolding and framing. Painting the landscapes and contrasting large mechanical buildings. Lots of visual textures.
@Davett53
@Davett53 10 месяцев назад
When I was a kid in the mid 1950s and through the 1970s, the air was so polluted with coal smoke, and smoke generated by the steel mills, smelting furnaces, the skies were always grey. It wasn't so bad in the suburbs, where I grew up, because the area was in "the heights",...an elevated part of the town. We were farther away from Lake Erie, and the industrial core. The amazing waterway that snaked its way through the Flats, coming off of Lake Erie allowing ore boats to reach the factories, is the Cuyahoga River. A century of heavy industry dumping their waste in the water had turned it black with oil and fuel sludge.
@Davett53
@Davett53 10 месяцев назад
Old geezer here. So I was born in Cleveland in 1953,...we lived in an eastern suburb, but overall not that far from downtown, Public Square, and the Flats. We used drive around there, occasionally. I did it more in my college years, of the 1970s & 1980s. My dad had a roofing company on East 55th near Carnegie Ave.. East of the downtown. The roads are bad everywhere because Cleveland liberally uses rock salt to control the ice on the roads. There are actual salt mines under Lake Erie, which are still being mined in 2023.

Thanks , I recently been you tubing all things Cleveland Ohio , so ur vid popped up as a suggestion..... glad I watched ! Surely appreciated ur liking that some cities produce things for the nation ,Haters of CLE be that till they die ,I cant and won't ever believe as a nation ,if we don't produce our own steel and other comadities ;(we are dependent on other nations )!My grandpa in 1978 , when i told him I hate my job , told me , Well walk to the next factory, I said ,grandpa ,( it ain't like that anymore....) I kindly said to him , he walked away ,in total disbelief, and called me lazy....hey China , and not because u built u country all alone , thanks to USA , companies ... can we have 200 tons ECT .of steel , we need it for military purposes... ?; oh we will back to you ,yet , I can go to a no longer $1.00 dollar store and buy a bag of frozen vegetables from this asian country how is this possible..... which i won't, personally it is bad ,what r they paying thier people, ? Go industrial cities, Go !

It's weird why MaineDOT made this part of I-95 a toll road. Maybe it's supposed to help decongest US 202 for drivers travelling to Augusta, ME. I-295 ME is shorter and quicker than I-95 if you want to travel between Augusta, ME and Portland, ME. Also, between both those important cities, the Maine Tpke links Lewiston, ME which is Maine's 2nd largest city and the largest city in the state that's not a county seat.
@blacktopandsteel
@blacktopandsteel 10 месяцев назад
I had thought at one time I-295 was originally I-95 and the ME Tpk didn't have a number designation until Gardiner where 295 merges.

Before the Boston Big Dig, I love the views of the skyline of Downtown Boston. Speaking of the Big Dig, it did replace the elevated portion which turned out to be a nice improvement over I-90/Mass Tpke and I-93, and it also extends the Mass Tpke to Logan Int'l Airport (BOS).

A bit late to the party as it were but this is the second video of yours I'm watching. Love that you're covering around the Steel/Industrial Belt of the midwest/northeast as this is by far my favorite area of the country. Starting in 1971 when I was 6 my parents and I moved around quite a bit, all between NY/OH/PA and finally settled right here in Uhrichsville (out in the country) as we had thoroughbred horses. Also - GREAT music with these - "Southern Cross" was one of my faves from around my senior year of high school. Keep 'em comin!

The Lehigh Valley is a quad county bi-state area as you can see here as where the last miles of the Lehigh River flows southwards, turns left and flows eastwards through 3 core cities (Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton or A.B.E.) and end at its mouth near Easton, PA and Phillipsburg, NJ meeting the Delaware River. Also, I consider the Lehigh Valley as one of 2 industrial hubs of the Keystone State bad in the old days other than Greater Pittsburgh, but nowadays, Pittsburgh is the more dominant industrial hub in the state than the Lehigh Valley. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I just bought a photo book of Central Florida's bone valley phosphate operations during the early 80s. It's crazy how many SCL trains operated their on a daily basis. There was something like 20 active mines and 14 processing plants during the peak of production during the 80s. Rail activity still takes place but it's only a fraction of what it once was. There's only 3 mines life, 2 which have rail operations and 3 processing plants. Really wish I could have been alive to see it at it's peak.

322 goes into Ohio, but it's nothing like this, it's just a two lane road here. Most of the eastern route of 322 in Ohio is all farm country, then it eventually works it's way into Cleveland and a then it becomes a big nightmare. I had a close friend who came from Philipsburg, Pa, he moved to Ohio and told me 30+ years ago that it would take him straight home, he was right.

The current philosophy is this: NEISO: We have plenty of power...as long as we can get it from Canada and NYISO. NYISO: We have plenty of power...as long as we can get it from Canada and PJM. PJM: We have plenty of power...as long as we can get it from MISO and SERC. MISO: We have plenty of power...as long as it's daylight and the wind is blowing a gale. If not, we'll get it from PJM and SERC. SERC: We have plenty of power...as long as we can get it from Florida, MISO, and PJM. ...and on Christmas Eve last year, the whole house of cards came tumbling down like so many smokestacks.
