A mix of videos giving practical tips for gardeners and videos about the meaning and messages of plants and flowers.

I have been running a plant nursery in Suffolk with my husband for 17 years. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to develop a closer understanding and knowledge of the plants I have worked with. Besides practical information, I wish to share the beauty, history, folklore and properties of flowers and plants.

Just by looking at flowers, berries or foliage we can be filled with emotion. We can feel a sense of peace, joy, confidence, love, regret, optimism or renewal. Plants speak to the mind, body and spirit. This has long been acknowledged and over the years flowers have been associated with meanings and messages.

You can read blogs that I write about folklore and symbolism of plants at ruthgoudy.com/blog/
If you are more interested in practical tips then you can find them on our nursery website kilnfarm.com/ruths-blog/

Do you have any tips on how to control slugs ?
@theflowerwriter
@theflowerwriter 2 месяца назад
Slugs have been a big problem this year in the UK because we have had a lot of rain and they love the damp. Hopefully they haven't managed to reach your hanging basket! I like environmentally friendly controls such as wool pellets or copper around your plants.

Thanks for sharing. How do I start if I have a plastic basket?
@theflowerwriter
@theflowerwriter 3 месяца назад
You just need to do the same. In some ways plastic baskets in summer are better because the water does not evaporate through the sides. However if you are in the UK you will be likely to be using peat free compost. I have made another video about how to use peat free. There is a risk in a container with no holes at the bottom that the water sits and creates a 'soggy bottom'! Follow my tips on how to check for that. If the base stays wet the roots will rot and the plants won't thrive. I hope this helps.
@sondragramse1770
@sondragramse1770 3 месяца назад
Have you ever cut holes (small) and have plants trail out of the bottom. I would sew up the hole loosely to prevent soul seepage. I saw that on another video
@theflowerwriter
@theflowerwriter 3 месяца назад
Yes I do that if it is for a pub or hotel where their baskets are often up high. Customers have a different view of the bottom of the basket so it means they can appreciate the flowers more. If you are going to do that though you need to make sure that the basket is big enough. I would recommend at least a 16" basket, otherwise there is not enough compost to sustain the flowers on top and the underplanting. I hope that helps.

That is a really beautiful basket. I am just learning, but how can flowers that crowded with so little soil grow? It seems like they would need some room for the roots to go somewhere.
@theflowerwriter
@theflowerwriter 5 месяцев назад
Good question. There is a bit of room for them to grow but they will only be growing for a few months over summer. Once they have grown into the space these 'summer bedding plants' will put all their energy into flowering prolifically. Then once there is a frost they will die (so there is no need for more space to grow).

Dandelion is one of the Safest Medicinal plant, no worry if no overdose. Its properties are indeed Beneficial, since "pissenlit" or "piss-a-bed" Cleanse the Root of our body system : not only the Kidneys but the Liver. Which is rare to do both. Liver & Kidneys are one of the 5 emonctories that are Vitally detoxifying, purging and flushing out everything that enters our bodies yet shouldn't stay in for our balanced health. Dandelion alongside Burdock, Milk's thistle, Nettle among are everything but "bad weed"....easily growing everywhere, very flexible in being invasive is indeed a gift : not only for us but also the Soil, so All Life then. Its nutritional richness provide such Vital resources : " best weed" ! At least 2 cures per year to Cleanse & Restore both Kidneys & Liver should be done. Of course be very careful as plants can kill as much as heal....but Dandelion is very Safe : roots, flowers and leaves. Well done Nature ! Time to listen to our bodies...Ground, vitally ground for energies from head to toes to calmly flow while far more. And make a wishful wish....

Hello Ruth, where can I find that kind of hanging baskets ? thanks
@theflowerwriter
@theflowerwriter 2 года назад
Hi there! I think that most garden centres here in the UK stock this type of basket. To be honest, just plant in a basket that you like. It is your chance to choose what you like the look of. The most important thing is not to use one that is too small.

Yes, this is for a mixed basket. In the UK I have always found that they are OK in moderation. If you are planting in hot, bright sunny conditions I would suggest geraniums. They are the most forgiving. I have made a video all about a shade hanging basket and talk about using non-stop and illumination begonias there. Thank you very much for your comments. :-)

@@tinarichardson5107 yes that is exactly what I would do. However as the season goes on and if you are planting late May early June you might find that the plants in the garden centre have grown bigger so you might not need so many. Just go with the flow! They flowers always look gorgeous.
