The Chinese guqin is a wonderful instrument but it is not a “lyre”. It is a zither (like the guzheng, the Japanese koto and the Korean kayagum). Dutch sinologist, Robert van Gulik, wrote a book about the guqin called THE LORE OF THE CHINESE LUTE. The guqin is not a “lute” either, but van Gulik felt that calling the instrument a lute rather than a zither was more elegant and lent more nobility to the instrument!

No, the guqin, pipa, and guzheng are not the same thing. It only has seven strings

A lyre is not defined by the number of strings. The guqin is a seven string zither. If you check Wikipedia, you will see that the guqin is defined as a “half-tube zither”. The guzheng is a twenty-one string zither. The pipa is a four string Chinese lute. I think the problem here is that you are trying to describe traditional Chinese instruments using western definitions. I watched your video (above) and it is excellent! Your instrument is beautiful and of very high quality, with a full and resonant sound. For westerners, the biggest challenge is learning to appreciate the extraordinary subtlety of guqin music, which must be listened to with Chinese ears.
