My dad has a 406 sbc 6-71 blower on it and he built it years ago and now he has dementia so he can't really help with what's wrong but I'm hoping someone can..so when you start it up and let it run low rpm you hear a sound coming from what sounds like the top (somewhere in the blower or just below) but when you give it gas and raise the rpms the sound goes away. It's not getting drowned out either it goes away entirely. But you come back down to an idle on rpms and boom you hear it again. Best way I can explain the sound is something that sounds kinda like a cranky sound. Metallic sounding as well. Any ideas? A friend suggest I take off the belt and start it to see if the sound persists because if the belt is off the blower and the sound is still happening it's not in the blower. So I still need to try that. I'm just really nervous to get into this because it's my dad's pride and joy and I'd hate to be the one to fuck things up more. But we have no choice we work on our cars always have so I'd like to keep that up. So once I feel confident I WILL be going at that car with everything in me
@@JeremyStaszak could be a number of things, hard to tell. Try to inspect any pulleys loose or damaged….. Could be rockers / lash need adjustment, Blower gears, etc….🤷🏻♂️hard to say
@@JeremyStaszak anytime👍🏼, just hard to say like that. Best is to observe anything external that could be causing such a noise then take it from there. 👍🏼🏁
Very cool indeed. Having fabrication skills is an essential part of hot rodding. This is another BadAss example of your imagination and skill. Well done my friend 🇦🇺🏁
I sort of prefer the engine sound of Iron cylinder heads. It is more apparent if you hear a Harley shovelhead BT next to an older Ironhead Sportster. I have also had less problems with Iron heads.
Great content, as always!! Over here in the USA, fuel is now sh*t, corrosive and limited shelf life as far as volatility!! I let my '71 Demon hot rod sit for 8-9 months and it wouldn't start. Had pump discharge and spark at the plugs. Poured some lawn mower gas in the carb and it fired right up, then stalled. Took the 2nd. cell outlet plug out and drained a sample. Poured it on a concrete driveway and it wouldn't light-off with a match!! This was 10+yrs ago. I drained the cell, put fresh pump in, and away I went. Criminal!!
@@rodneybyrd9516 wow that’s crazy, yes it’s beginning to be an ongoing thing now with only “initial start ups” where i have to do these quick maintenance tricks…..time for a thorough clean & rebuild soon i think👍🏼🏁
The need for an upgrade to the latest and greatest depends on how much additional performance (if any) they might offer. Your old Demons don’t appear to be haunted by the demons typically associated with old age. After you did the required carb maintenance, that amazing blown Cleveland fired right up and idled like a BADASS ! 🇦🇺🏁👍
@@danielwilson6665 exactly DW don’t think it’ll make that big of a difference🤷🏻♂️ Will need to pull apart bese carbs though for a decent clean & carb kit while I’m at it , thanks 👍🏼🤷🏻♂️
Thanks vrm👍🏼appreciate it. Just been strapped for time to be honest🤷🏻♂️. Yes they’re amazingly clean….but giving me slight issues lately upon start up🤦🏻♂️🏁
In highschool in Texas in late 80's we drove a 56 F100 to school .It had a 2v 351c w/ a Holley 500 2v carb. Outran nearly every sbc equipped car cruising town. Had to pop the hood more than once to prove it was a 2v. So much fun!
@@69JANKS yeah already on it bro! what are your thoughts on mating a used good condition flat tappet cam to new lifters? is this no worries or risky during break in?
@@harmankardon478 👍🏼…, new lifters on a good used cam shld be fine, (just can never use any old lifters on a new cam or other) the LS guys always change out noisy lifters after big Kms use….so🤷🏻♂️! Maybe use an adequate oil also first time up👍🏼🏁
@@FordRanchero289 just deck the oc a little & run a flat top as close to zero deck…..it’ll be ok, I’ve seen them still make 430-450+hp na on pump gas👍🏼🏁
@@gearbanger57 they are💯👌🏼,got it completely stock trail/road factory, been contemplating actually to take a shift on the channel , my initial idea for a YT channel was the Cafe’Racer build (i have clips doing the custom mods etc) but also to share the Cleveland stuff, decisions 🤷🏻♂️🏁
It seems down under has a much better supply of vintage Cleveland speed parts. Here in the US I have never even seen a set of 2bbl closed chamber heads except in pictures. For my Windsor block based clevors I am teaching myself to build sheetmetal intakes, there's almost zero commercially available.
I found a NOS Man A Fre intake for a 292 inline 6 Chevy and 3 1957 Pontiac large bore Rochester's ,On the Dyno It made 363 HP and that's with one bad carb ! Then we put the dual quad system on with two Holley 450s and made 377HP . So the 3 Rochester's are out getting totally built and set up for my application. The throttle response was instant ! Took me weeks to get the Holley's tuned right , But I think the Man A Fre with correct carburetor's has way more power when all are in Sync. Here's mine on the dyno. And yes that sound is a 6 !!! check it out .ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EySvHVl93Qk.html
Not too sure on Dyers🤷🏻♂️but a few options out there for Cleveland blower intakes….BDS being the most $$ it’s almost ridiculous🤦🏻♂️. Can mill & make/weld your own also based from a TR or even a single plane 👍🏼🏁
Weird ? Maybe just a little but the way you demonstrate the many different configurations, I would call it uniquely versatile. Cleveland dreaming in California 🏁
@@69JANKS The way you cut through the BS and present the essential facts about real world components is what separates you from the average RU-vid pretenders. If I had something worthwhile to put your unique intake manifold on, I would be asking you HOW MUCH $. Unfortunately I only have one pair of conventional 2-V iron OC heads at the moment and that inlet manifold deserves a much better home. I would imagine that manifold would work well with a pair of 🇦🇺 2-V heads or something expensive in small port aluminum. I assume it’s designed for a 9.2” deck block 🤔.
@@danielwilson6665 thanks DW, appreciate your comments👍🏼, yes for a Cleveland 9.2” …….yes would luv to piece together a na 3.75”stroke Clevo running my iron Closed Chamber 2V heads (ported n done of course) with this efi TR or even Carb it…..be a nice 500+hp deal🏁
@@69JANKS No worries my friend. I’m glad to comment because everything you post is so relevant to the past and current state of racing. That 383 combination you described would be a practical and affordable way to make some big power numbers using your extremely versatile induction system. Of course you already know the hows and whys of such a build 🤷♂️🏁🏁🏁.
Hey Janks what's your thoughts on port matching? I know you watched the dyno vid. of my 393 with iron 4v's that made ok hp and tq with a scm dual plane manifold that's nowhere near port matched. Cheers.
There maybe a little left in the tank , depends on the mismatch……if it’s a tiny offset probably nothing, but a decent visual mismatch can be worth some hp/tq…….usually between 5-20hp 🤷🏻♂️🏁 👍🏼🏁
I have this type of blower too, just want to know where I can find the manifold, the blower kit such as the belt pulley, and convert it too my motor project
My old friend, Ray Hoffeld, just passed. He was involved in racing years ago. He sold two brand new, never unwrapped Cross Bosses, complete with carbs, a couple of years ago. I don't know who bought those, but when he would pull those out, spanking brand new "in-the-box", it was like looking at artwork. I had always hoped to buy one of those from him. Too bad I didn't know he was selling them, but I'm sure he got a lot more $$$ than I could afford.
By 1972 they had roller cams. My duster ran roller. Some of the cars ran roller in 1970. If you would like to talk about this. I own the national nostalgia pro stock association
Hey Janks - I remember the exhaust smell of the AvGas v the Race Gas. It was cheaper (and more prevalent) to find AvGas than Race fuel, so every gas can available got filled at one of the small local airports. I ran my XS100F on AvGas!
Cool MCM 👌🏼🏁, i also ran my NA Cleveland 4V on AvGas, 12.8:1 comp with iron heads & roared to 7500rpm lol Those were the days, going to the airport side gate 😂, & the mobile fuel truck filling 20L tins for us for Cash…..can’t see that happening nowadays NoWay lol …..👍🏼🏁
@@Motor-City-Mike right on MCM, best is not to get pulled into any drama or conflict on YT as a total, i do my best to try support or show respect esp to all Viewers 🤜🏼🤛🏼 & channels also. Big time DW, well even just pump Premium Unleaded is badass. Avgas was like 100 octane & pretty cool, whereas Premium Unleaded from the bowser is like 98 octane…… Not bad i say 🤷🏻♂️🏁
Not bad at all when taking into consideration the two different octane rating methods used in Australia and the United States. Here in the South East USA we have 93 premium which is basically the same as your 98. Fortunately we also have e85 available at the pump in many areas. Most strips also have a good selection of fuels available. The last time I raced my supercharged daily driver, I used 100 octane unleaded which made a huge difference in performance. It’s all good and getting better 🏁
@@danielwilson6665 it sure is DW , yes for us here in Sydney🇦🇺 it’s basically our 98 (your 93) & we only have like 2-3 stations that supply pump e85…..not a fan of it really it stinks on the street. You can smell it even from a vehicle 500m ahead in traffic (not that you see it a lot) I remember once I had run out of AvGas out on a cruise one night (1998-99) & had to pour in⛽️ pump Super to get me home……i couldn’t rev it past 2000rpm cause it was pinging it’s tits off hahaha🤦🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🏁 no Premium high octane nothing for us at that point……as soon as premium unleaded came available, wow it was a game changer for badass pump fuel deals💪🏼🏁
@@69JANKS I’ve only used e85 a few times in street applications with lower than 12:1 compression with pretty good results. The 93 pump fuel does well in most cases. When compression is really high like Clevelands respond so well to, the tracks typically have a good selection of high octane race fuel available for most all applications. The e85 has become surprisingly popular with racers over here. So much in fact that many of the aftermarket carburetor manufacturers are now offering Holley based carbs built for compatibility and calibrated specifically for e85 fuel. But the old school way still works just fine for me 👍🏁.
I've used Cleveland heads, 2bbl and 4bbl but most of my motors have been Windsor block based Clevors. Nothing against the Cleveland block, they are just hard to find and expensive.
Back when we stood behind what we said - ALL my 4spd, and most of my auto street-racers were chained down to put the power through the car, not use it stretching/breaking motor mounts! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
